Lest we forget. Remembrance Day celebrated everywhere is also celebrated as Independence Day in Poland. All Polish families have been affected by war in one way or another. I lost my Great grandmother on September 2, 1939, as Germans bombarded civilian train full of families trying to escape the war. She was buried in common grave with other victims from that horrible day. The funeral only happened few years back. Her children were too old to travel and be present. My Great g...randpa was evicted from his home with three little kids. One of them, my Great Aunt had to work as a servant for German family that lived in her own place. She did not like to talk about the war much. They all survived. Lucky, but scared. My mom’s and my generations are very lucky to have lived in peaceful times.
