Calving Season! We don’t start until April - but I am so excited as this is the first calving season I have been home full time for - in quite a while! I’m a ...prolific list maker - and a huge believer in preparing for preparation to prepare Here is some hard earned 30years of calving season support knowledge to get ready to calve our cows: Food! The Army and Farmer/Ranchers all march on their stomachs. Meaning. Feed good food to stay healthy during the busiest and most stressful time of year. When you are cooking meals the next few weeks - double the recipe and freeze. Most ranchers wives are outside alongside the crew working the same hours and when everyone comes in cold and starving - a meal is still needed even if you were outside for 14 hours. So pop a container of frozen soup in the crockpot at 630am. A frozen roast and a few onions and a can of beer. Whatever. But think about cooking supper at 630am. Its the difference between coming home to a meal and heading back out on a full stomach or just starting a meal at 9pm at night. Buy some foil take out containers at the dollar store. Make some casseroles ahead label well and freeze. Even cook up some ground beef and freeze, sliced cooked chicken breasts etc. You are looking for speed and convenience here. Desserts - I try to keep the cookie jar full in April. We have had kitsilano cookies for breakfast and lunch before after a long morning of slugging frozen wet calves - a batch of hot muffins or snack cake etc is a morale booster. Supplies: Towels. Go to the salvage centre now and buy some old beach towels (or take the 15 year old towels you are currently using and buy new ones ) Talk to your Veterinarian now-when they aren’t also sleep deprived ... what do they recommend to have on hand. You need a Vet to scribe most medicines now - and now is a good time to book a meeting to get those things handled (Pain mitigation and other medications) Flashlights/headlamps everyflat surface needs one! Cellphone chargers in the calving barn. Reader glasses - I bought a cheap pair of drugstore glasses and put them in the Vet box - because reading drug labels is impossible for me. Electrolytes and check the hose on your calf tuber. It’s fun driving to UFA at 140kmh to buy a calf tuber and they’re all sold out Dry mitts and socks In a ziplock bag in the calf barn. Whisky. Intuition. Trust it. Humour. Pack it with you everywhere. Basically. It’s easier to stock a freezer and refill scripts now - than when your hair is on fire. Of course using appropriate birth weight Bulls. Cow nutrition and herd health go a long way to making calving seasons work - plan for the worst weather and worst conditions and start your calving season with your feet in your boots! See more

Eastlink has said they are working on the problem and it will go down again at some point. Apparently there is feed back is coming from a house and will be monitoring our service day and night until they find the problem. They apologize for the inconvenience.

A community pioneer passed away this week at the age of 102. World War 1 had yet to end when Winston Parker of the Red Deer Lake area was born. He served with B...omber Command during the Second World War and spent 4 years in a POW camp. He preferred to be remembered as a southern Alberta horseman, rancher and community builder. When Marilyn and Craig Evans brought Winston to the Bar U for a visit in 2017 (pictured) he shared a story of George Lane visiting his father's ranch to see a Thoroughbred stallion. Winston Parkers story, Saddles and Service was published in 2011. Do you have any memories of Winston to share? See more
