Eclipsing fog that we are used to seeing up on the north island. Sitting quiet with no motor running. Not a sound other than some birds off in the distance. Then from contracted muscles we hear an exhalation, as a humpback breaks the water for a breath. We don't see it but it's out there. It's mystical. Yesterday must have been one of my most productive photography days ever - lol. There was a big storm coming but before it hit I decided to go out for a couple of hours to see what the whales are doing. Launched my boat at Telegraph Cove Marina & RV Park and left right away. Not even 10 minutes out a saw a few humpback whales in Weynton Passage, tides were strong. I saw a smaller boat with some humpback over on the other side of the channel but decided to leave them wi...th their whales and just stopped right in the middle of the channel and turned my engine off. Just drifting in the tide. Then boom, splash, over close to the other boat, a humpback breach, one of the most powerful displays in nature in my humble opinion. 48 tons flying through the air with a big, big splash at the end? It is an amazing sight, believe me. Well, I still honoured that the other boat was there first and I didn’t want to interrupt. So I kept drifting, maybe sitting for 15 minutes when another humpback came up close to shore, close to my boat. Well, not even 30 minutes into the trip, he breached close to me, I lucked out, photographed it and 30 minutes later the wind picked up and I drove back to Telegraph Cove. Probably the best, most efficient trip I ever had, 2 hours total, launching the boat, got the breach and boat back on the trailer and washed. All done - lol. I have seen a few humpback whales breaching over the years and every time it takes my breath away. For me, it is one of the absolute highlights one can experience in regards to wildlife. And sometimes, when we in ready mode we are able to capture the energy displayed. I normally prefer to have shorter shutter speeds, at least 1/2000 but yesterday I wanted to try something new. I altered the speed because I wanted to capture the flow of the water along their skin. So I needed a speed which was fast enough to capture the energy but slow enough to show the flowing water. Well, yesterday 1/1000 was the perfect combination. Humpback whale breaching near Swanson Island, Broughton Archipelago, First Nations Territory, British Columbia, Canada ------------ @Rolf Hicker Photography #humpbackwhale #humpback #broughtonarchipelago
