I’ve got 6 tips for a BETTER sleep for today’s Wellness Wednesday. I sleep like a champ - but it wasn’t always that way, here are my top tips. 1 Lower the te...mperature in your bedroom. Your body temperature is key to your circadian rhythm and it naturally lowers at night. A room too warm or too cold can disrupt your sleep. If you've got a little one around, just make sure they are properly clothed for sleep and have a warm blanket. 2 Get blue light blocking glasses. Light disrupts our circadian rhythm so as soon as the sun goes down, put your glasses on. I had some pretty stylish ones that had a clear lens. They were okay, but now that I have legit blue light blockers that black up to 95% of blue light I can literally see the difference. I love my Ra Optics glasses, you can use this link for 10% off. raoptics.com/joyoushealth 3 Make sure you get outside at least twice a day. Even better if you can gaze at the sunrise in the morning. Light is information for our brains. It tells our brain when to release hormones and balances our body’s internal clock. It increases serotonin thereby boosting our mood. The more daylight you can obtain the better! 4 Limit caffeine and stimulants. Coffee, black tea and stimulants like sugar wake up our nervous system. While coffee and tea have numerous health benefits they are not ideal for everyone. Caffeine has a half-life of 5 hours so if you drink a grande cup of coffee at 3pm (330mg), then at 8pm you still have 115mg of caffeine in your system! However, there are exceptions to this rule because some people detox caffeine very quickly. If you have trouble sleeping, take a break from coffee. 5 Move your body every day. If you want to sleep well, then make sure you wear yourself out during the day! This helps with both daytime alertness and sets the stage to be tired at night. If I’m going to be sitting most of the day, I make sure I move every single hour with either 20 squats or lunges around the office. 6 Consider a magnesium supplement. I take Magnesium every night before bed. I’ve been doing this since Vienna was born to support and calm my nervous system. Magnesium is a potent anti-stress mineral.
