#VolunteersofTO: Through 25+ years of volunteering, Kimya has always succeeded in creating a sense of belonging, unity, and acceptance for her community. At 16 years old, she began volunteering as an after school English teacher to foreign exchange students. After college, she co-led The Power to Be Int'l, a charity dedicated to building the capacity of youth through literacy and leadership programs. Today, Kimya is a proud mother who works 40-hour weeks, and still manages to run her own empowerment and outreach focused non-profit organization, PowerFilled Youth. She's an invaluable gift that never stops giving. @powerfilledyouth.to Kimya is a short-list nominee for the 2020 #LegacyAwards celebrating exceptional volunteers in Toronto. "During the holiday season people often want to volunteer their time to serve a Christmas meal or help out at food drives, but this year Toronto organizations have changed traditional plans due to COVID-19. In past years, several organizations have sought out volunteers for a host of programs, from putting together food hampers to preparing turkey dinners. However, the lockdown measures in Toronto have put volunteer programs on hold and have organizations turning help away." blogTO We're working with non-profits to help them adapt to engage volunteers safely during the pandemic. Unfortunately, many volunteers will be turned away over the holidays. We recommend you donate instead as a meaningful way to give back.

It is a Toronto tradition to give back during the holiday season. This year, however, things look a bit different. Many non-profits that organize holiday volunteer opportunities, such as mall gift wrappers, group shifts at food banks, and holiday event roles, are not able to engage volunteers due to COVID-19 safety precautions. Volunteer Toronto encourages every Torontonian and non-profit to follow local safety bylaws. This year, we recommend you donate to a non-profit or cause in your community to make a meaningful contribution over the holiday season. We've compiled a list of organizations actively accepting donations. Learn more: https://www.volunteertoronto.ca//Holiday-Volunteer-Opportu

Canadian Blood Services is in need of new donors and long-time donors to book and honour their appointments in December. Thousands of donors are needed to fill every available appointment this holiday season. Your support through blood, plasma, platelet and financial donations ensures a strong national inventory of blood and blood products for patients across Canada. Saving a life can be your greatest gift. All blood types are needed. Everyone who is able to is encouraged to ...donate. Encourage a family member, friend or colleague to book an appointment to donate as well. Together, apart, you can make donating blood, plasma or platelets a new meaningful tradition. Appointments are required to ensure physical distancing. For more information, visit blood.ca/COVID19
