The Common Nighthawk (Chordeiles minor) returns every year to nest in the coastal sand ecosystem on #SidneyIsland in late spring. By #July , this threaten...ed #SpeciesAtRisk will have settled in and made its nest right on the sand, relying on its light brown colouring to avoid detection by predators. Help protect species in the coastal sands ecosystem by staying below the high tideline and keeping your furry friends on a leash! #12MonthsOfFieldwork

Look at all the signs! And . . . we need more. :) We are so grateful to everyone who has sponsored and/or positioned a "See a Blow, Go Slow" sign. You can n...ow check out our map at https://mersociety.org/sponsorsign ** to see all the good work that has been done and where you can help add a sign. PLEASE. Maybe dedicate a sign to a loved one? Maybe sponsor one as a gift? There are so many moving human stories behind the sponsorship of these signs. We really do need more help. These signs are essential to reducing the risk of collision between whales and boaters. The fortunate increase in Humpback Whales off our coast is a game changer for boater safety. Humpback Whales behave very differently from whales like Orca. Adult Humpbacks are approximately the size of a school bus. They move in big and unpredictable ways. They can suddenly surface. Dives can last 20 or more minutes. They are also often acrobatic which adds to their unpredictability and need for space. Because they do not have bio-sonar as toothed whales do, they can be oblivious to the proximity of boats. Collision with Humpbacks has led to very significant human injury & material loss. It is imperative that we increase boater knowledge to keep everyone safe. ** The map is being updated as we go. If you know of a sign that is not on the map, or is missing a photo, please let us know [email protected] #SeeaBlowGoSlow #mersociety #humpbackwhale #whaleresearch #marineconservation #bcpoli #ISawTheSign #GiftsWithDepth

Gravenstein, Red Delicious, and King, oh my ! These are some of the names of the apples that are in full bloom at some of the orchards across Gulf Islands Nati...onal Park Reserve. Did you know that many of these orchards were planted initially between the 1830s and 1960s?
