Woody's 5th week update! Woody’s obesity increased his risk of becoming diabetic. By getting his weight down to his ideal weight (we estimate that to be about 13 lbs) we hope to not only make it easier for Woody to get around but also to try and get his diabetes to go into remission. Diabetic remission means that Woody wouldn’t have to get his insulin injections every 12 hours! The idea is that his insulin cells are like over worked employees who walk off the job because they... can’t keep working. If you give the cells a vacation by providing the body with insulin (ie from injections) sometimes the cells will come back to work aka remission. A little late but here is Woodys update, Week 4! Woody has slowly been adjusting to his new life. He is very tolerant of his new roommates but they are not quite sure what to make of him! Did you know that cats get a type of diabetes that is similar to type 2 diabetes in people? That means it is acquired vs being something they are born with. ... Diabetes is defined as the inability to produce enough insulin to balance blood sugar or glucose levels. The common signs of diabetes are drinking excessively, urinating excessively and weight loss. If diabetes isn’t treated it will eventually cause the cat to become dehydrated, depressed and even death. To learn more about feline diabetes visit https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx

Woody update week 3: Weigh in time...... and the results are... Woody has lost 1/2 a kg! (or just over 1lb!) ... Our goal is for him to lose 2% of his body weight per week. There is a limit to how fast animals can lose weight safely and as much as we want to get some pressure off those poor legs we don’t want to take any risks with Woody Keep up the good work Woody!! <3
