Happy Friday! Check out this fascinating video from our friends at the Raincoast Education Society about their shorebird habitat research at the Wahnahjuss Hi...lthhooiss Mudflats near Tofino . CBT is proud to have contributed funding to the RES's important ongoing shorebird research. Our education tourism initiative, West Coast NEST, also recently collaborated with RES to co-host a filmmaking course to enable other local organizations to shoot and edit their own videos like this one. The workshops help them to promote their work and incorporate the United Nations #SDGs into their planning and communications! Stay tuned to see the videos as we share them this fall.

Living on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, marine harvesting can be the primary way that we interact with our natural world. It can define our seasons, industries and our cultures, says Laura from the Ucluelet Aquarium. Similar to hunting on land, knowing species id, conservation concerns, and proper harvesting techniques are important for ensuring long-term survival of the species were targeting. Whether youre heading out fishing, crabbing or seaweed foraging, be sure... to learn about the species youre harvesting so you can make an informed decision around your catch! Here are some ideas: - Learn from the locals! Head out with a fishing guide and ask lots of questions. Not only will you come back with fish to eat, but most guides are happy to share their wealth of knowledge about fish, fishing, marine mammals, and most ocean-related topics. Visit the Tourism Tofino and Tourism Ucluelet websites to connect with a local guide. - Follow sport fishing regulations set out by Fisheries and Oceans Canada- We have some knowledgeable, friendly fisheries officers in Tofino, call them if you have a question! - Visit the Ucluelet Aquarium chat with their staff about fish, crabs, and seaweeds. Read their Guide to BC Rockfish - Take a course in freediving with Bottom Dwellers Freediving freediving can open up the possibilities of seaweed foraging and spearfishing both which allow you to actively choose what you are taking from the ocean, so that you can apply your knowledge about which species are best to target - Take a course in Sustainable and Ethical Harvesting! Hopefully post-covid we can offer this course again, with speakers from Ucluelet Aquarium, Uu-a-thluk (Taking Care of), and Fisheries and Oceans Canada Are there other ways youve learned about sustainable and ethical marine harvesting? Please share with us below! Video On the Beach Motion Pictures Audio Bensound See more

Over the last month, more than 35 people from Clayoquot Biosphere Region communities, organizations, businesses, and governments engaged in a workshop series to learn about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These global goals are a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity, for people and the planet, with the power to create a better world by 2030, and to ensure a future where no one is left behind! A big thank you to all that participated, and to BC Council for Inter...national Cooperation for leading us through informative and interactive sessions, and for sharing their extensive knowledge about the #globalgoals. If you missed it, check out the link below to BCCICs What are the SDGs? video, and stay tuned to Clayoquot Biosphere Trust and West Coast NEST for more SDG activities in the region! Here are some learning highlights from participants: I learned about the gaps and strengths in our communitys actions towards SDGs and can now speak with more confidence about how my organization addresses some of these issues. More about the goals/targets/indicators and how I can use them in my work supporting local agriculture. I can also use them to help me develop metrics and evaluation measures. I learned about the history of the SDGs as a follow up to the [United Nations] Millennium [Development Goals] I learned about efforts to engage communities & document work being done to pursue SDGs across local to federal level. I learned what regional focus there is on certain SDGs as well as the gaps. I hope to figure out ways to include other SDGs into my organization's work. https://youtu.be/U9sU9MjgTDI #Goal4 #Qualityeducation #ultimateclassroom #myNESTcoast #westcoastnest. . . . . . . #clayoquotsound #clayoquotbiosphere #ourbiosphere #vancouverisland #westcoastcanada #outdoorlearning #natureschool #tofino #yourtofino #ucluelet #myucluelet #explorebc #explorevancouverisland #sharethecoast #pnw #wildernessculture #beautifuldestinations #earthfocus #explorecanada #educationaltours #experientialtravel #transformativelearning

Exploring tide pools is a great way to learn about animals and seaweeds while being active in nature! Just search online for the next low tide, throw on some boots, and head to your favorite beach. Either grab your favourite guidebook (head to the Ucluelet Aquarium or a local bookstore such as Mermaid Tales Bookshop or Blackberry Cove Marketplace if you need to pick one up), take a camera and identify species you saw online when you get back home, or use the iNaturalist.org app on your phone. Remember to tread lightly and take only photos home with you. Here you can spend a short moment with this Tidepool sculpin we met yesterday while exploring tidepools from the Wild Pacific Trail. Enjoy!

Some ideas are to: Learn about your neighbours! Get into your backyard or explore a park nearby (remembering to #ExploreLocal for now) and get to know the organisms that live around you. Organizations such as Ucluelet Aquarium, Wild Pacific Trail, and Raincoast Education Society have many great pr...ograms to teach us about the variety of plants, animals, fungi, and ecosystems here in the Clayoquot Biosphere Region. They are also providing online learning opportunities so you can join along and #RoamfromHome When landscaping at home, leave natural vegetation to encourage pollinators and other beneficial insects. You can learn to identify invasive plants and if its safe, remove them from your yard. Support an organization that is protecting and restoring nature such as the Tribal Parks Allies, Central Westcoast Forest Society, or the Wild Salmon Fund through Clayoquot Biosphere Trust, for example.
