After consulting numerous sources, colleagues and our college, we have decided that it is in the best interest of our staffs, patients and the public, that West Mississauga Foot Clinic will be closed, effectively after March 16 shift, until April 1, 2020 (unfortunately this is not an April Fool's Joke). As you are already aware, COVID-19 is an imminent threat to our population's health and lives, especially vulnerable patients. Patient whom are over 65 or medically or immuno...logical compromised make up majority of our client list and we want to protect them as best as we could. Perhaps even more importantly, making difficult decisions today, rather than waiting until tomorrow, we can play our part in social distancing by closing the clinic. By having our staff and patients stay home, we can do our part in limiting the number of cases of COVID-19, slow the spread and lessen the anticipated major strain on our healthcare system. Majority of the procedures and services we carry out on a daily basis are elective in nature, I am certain this decision, although difficult to make, is the best option for my clients, staff, and community. If you have an appointment at our clinic in the coming weeks, be assured we will do our best to be in touch with you to reschedule. Our college strongly recommends that all non-essential and elective chiropody services should be suspended immediately and we will follow the college's recommendation. Emergency treatment and post operative care will be seen only on Friday. To be seen on friday, temperature will be taken at the time of visit, hand sanitizer will be provided upon entering and we will ask you a few questions in regards to your general health and travel history. I sincerely value your understanding and wish you all wellness during this uncertain and unpredictable time. West Mississauga Foot Clinic

Happy New Year Everyone! Let’s start the year off on the right foot. But before we do that, we need to ensure our shoes fit well. We have some tips to help minimize foot problems caused by poorly fitting or worn-out shoes. 1. Proper Fit of Shoes:... - Get your feet measured prior to buying shoes. You may not be your regular shoe size because as we get older, our joints tend to spread out from years of being on your feet. Fun Fact: Kid’s feet can grow up to TWO shoe sizes in six months! - Buy shoes towards the end of the day. Swelling of feet can change your shoe size by half to even a full shoe size. - Ensure a finger’s width of space from your longest toe to the end of the shoe. Buying enlarged shoes can cause feet to slide forward causing more pressure in the toes. Whereas tight shoes can cause blisters, corns, calluses and even ingrown toenails. 2. Worn Out Shoes: - Look at bottom of your shoes. The tread on your shoes is similar to the tread on car tires. If worn out, you are not getting the traction you need to feel stable. - Look inside your shoes. Is the back of your shoe worn out? If so, your heel may be sliding around too much contributing to an unstable gait. - Look at the top of your shoes, do you see any tear-outs? Tear-outs over the toes can signify that your shoe is too small. - Look at your shoes from the back. Does your shoe still tall and straight or is it leaning to one side? If it’s leaning to one side, it has taken mould of your foot and is no longer providing the support it once gave. If you have any question or concerns regarding your footwear, make an appointment with one of our foot specialists TODAY! 905-625-1555.

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a band of ligamentous tissue that is located on the bottom of your foot, from your heel to your toes. The plantar fascia is important because it supports the arch of your foot and helps to absorb shock as you walk. Some symptoms of plantar fasciitis include: stabbing pain around the heel, the most pain is felt with the first few steps in the morning or after a long period of inactivity. Pl...antar fasciitis can be caused when the ligament is overused and microtears develop. This can cause pain and swelling. Some conditions that can lead to plantar fasciitis include: - If your feet roll inwards excessively when you walk (overpronation) - You have a high arch (pes cavus) or low arch (flat feet/pes planus) - You have increased your activity (too much walking, standing or running for long periods of time) - Poor footwear - You have tight muscles, specifically your calf muscles How to treat plantar fasciitis: Short term: - Stretching and strengthening muscles - Icing the painful area - Changing to appropriate footwear - Taping the foot - Inserts (custom made or over the counter) - Foot mobilization therapy (FMT see our other blog!) Mid term: - Therapeutic modalities (ultrasound, TENS, laser) - Compression sleeve - Night splints Long term - Corticosteroid injection - Surgery (Plantar fasciotomy)

It is that time of year again where we start hearing about the opening of the CNE, back to school sales and last minute plans in effort to soak up the last of the summer sun. As we all are starting- or planning to start- switching into non summer shoes here are a few things we should be looking for that is appropriate for all ages. 1. Torsional rigidity: make sure the shoe cannot be twisted up like a towel. 2. Heel stability: make sure the heel counter is not collapsible. 3.... Forefoot bend: Make sure the shoe only beds where the big toe would bend naturally. Shoes are an important part of foot health and feet are important to our overall well being. Happy feet, happy life! If you have any questions or concern, please schedule an appointment with one of our registered chiropodist at 905-625-1555.

It’s finally summer time and who doesn't want to just slip on a pair of flip flops to wear outdoors? Flip flops are comfy and easy to put on but beware repercussions! Yes they prevent you from catching plantar warts and athletes foot in public showers and pools, however they are not good for extensive walking. They have no arch support, offer no shock absorption and heel cushioning which can lead to foot pain, sprained ankles and tendonitis. As there is no backing to this ty...pe of footwear, your feet are more likely to slip forcing the toes to curl to gain a grip of the surface. Take care of your feet in the summer by wearing rigid, supportive footwear. A good recommendation of a summer sandal is Birkenstocks. If you have any questions about your feet or need a shoe recommendations, contact us today at (905) 625-1555 to schedule an appointment with one of our registered chiropodists. West Mississauga Foot Clinic is located at 1550 S Gateway Rd, Unit 205, in Mississauga (between Eastgate Pkwy and Eglinton Ave E off of Dixie Rd.)
