How are your pipes fairing this deep freeze? Five tips for winter plumbing 1. Make sure all outside fixtures are isolated inside and the outside sections are pr...operly drained of water. 2. Put anti-freeze in outside drains with a trap. Just a cup or two of anti-freeze will stop and outside drains traps from freezing and cracking. If you have a pool house with a change room and toilet you can respectively put anti-freeze in the tank and bowl of the toilet but the best solution is to have a plumber remove the toilet and seal the drain until the spring time. 3. If you are running new sections of piping avoid outside walls at all cost. If you need to use an outside wall for a plumbing wall consider framing with 2X6 stud. Make sure wall is properly insulated and vapor barrier is used. Pipes should be on the warm side of the vapor barrier, insulating the pipes is an extra precaution that can be taken as well. 4. If you are running water lines in drafty places like a crawl space similar action should be taken as situation #3. Further more the route of the draft should be found and sealed before plumbing is added to the space. 5. If you are running water lines underground use appropriate piping meant for underground usage. This is type-K soft annealed copper, Wirsbo, and PE pipe (Black poly). When you are digging down to lay your pipe you must go at LEAST 4 feet below grade to insure you are below the frost level. The pipes can only come up into a heated insulated space. If this is not possible and you must come above ground prior to entering the space you need to use tracer wire and insulation to insure that the pipe wont freeze.
