Something to think about

Westside Stable 27.01.2021

I kept my horse We rode many miles, won many shows, and we spent hundreds of hours side by side. Now you’re old, you’re retired, and you’re my old man. ... I kept my horse when he went lame- every damn time. I kept my horse when I fell off - it wasn’t his fault anyways. I kept my horse when I thought it shouldn’t be this hard- I didn’t know that’s how I would learn. I kept my horse when he told me he couldn’t be ridden anymore - because I know compassion. I kept my horse when I moved away for college and struggled with time- because he’s family. I kept my horse when I was broke- because sometimes times are tough. I kept my horse when he couldn’t jump high and run fast because I could see that he still would try if If I asked but he shouldn’t. I kept my horse when I bought a new one- 3 actually, because he’s irreplaceable. I kept my horse when I wished I had room for one that was sound- because I owe it to him. I kept my horse when he was costing me more money to feed then any of my riding horses, because money isn’t everything. When his legs had enough- and all he could bare to carry was his own weight, I still kept my horse. When his career as a riding horse was over- I knew I had to keep my horse. No one owes this horse a retirement except for me, and shame on anyone who selfishly convinces themselves otherwise. I owe him so much more for what he has done for me, but I plan to try and make it up to him when he has nothing more to offer me. Because that’s how it should be Dedicated to Bo

Just found this fantastic article and diagram explaining bending and turning and the importance of having the horse connected between your inside leg and outsid...e hand. ‘MORE INSIDE leg!’ or ‘more outside rein’ is a common comment by Trainers and coaches. (I say it all the time ) What does it really mean? It means that your inside leg creates the energy when riding, and your outside rein regulates it. The inside leg, being at the girth, asks the horse to bend around it. Then the outside rein is there to elastically maintain the horse’s shape around the inside leg, by supporting the inside aid so the horse doesn’t move away from the leg. Your inside leg and outside rein should constantly be talking to each other and coordinate. If you were to only use the inside leg for instance, without the support from the outside rein (and leg), the horse would move away from the leg instead of around it, and he would fall out through his outside shoulder. Using the outside rein and leg we can support the outside of the horse. The inside rein is used as a direction by opening the hand to guide the animal to the direction your wanting to go. By turning your body and shoulders your horse will find it easier to turn and bend around the inside leg. Of course, it’s not just the inside leg and outside rein that’s doing all the magic. They are just individual instruments in the orchestra of aids that combined creates the symphony of harmonious riding. But they do play important parts of the beat. If you want to be sure you’re riding on your outside rein: Do a shoulder in, and let go of the inside rein. In walk, trot, and canter. The movement should not be disturbed if you’re coordinating the aids correctly. *correct bend shown on the right of the diagram

Don’t forget the school horse that made you. The patient soul that tolerated your bouncing while you figured out how to sit the trot. The kind mare that didn’t ...walk off when you fumbled with the bridle. The sweet gelding that picked up the correct canter lead even though your body was telling him to do the exact opposite. The saintly angel that never spooked, which is a good thing because your balance was precarious at best because you only rode once a week. Too often we forget where we came from. We move on to the next chapter in our lives and say, Oh my gosh, I’m learning so much! I’m going so far! I could never do this kind of horse on that old school horse! But that school horse gave you the confidence to move forward. That school horse took care of you and allowed you to take the time you needed to find your way. You couldn’t have become the rider you are today without that old, dumpy school horse.

One day his coat won’t shine quite as bright, His eyes won’t sparkle quite how they used to. His legs will become tired and he’ll take a little longer to get ...up. He won’t come to the door when you bring his saddle out anymore and he’ll find those jumps just a little harder work than he did before. But he’ll never stop loving you. He’ll never stop waiting, with pricked ears, to hear you arrive in the morning. He’ll never stop grabbing your zip if you stand too close. He’ll never stop throwing his bucket over the door when he finishes his dinner. One day he'll grow old. One day his body will slow down and he will let you know it’s time to hang up the bridle. And when that day comes, give him a hug, hold him tight and thank him for everything. Give him days in grass filled fields under summer sun. Give him love, attention and never let him believe he is anything less than perfect. Don’t cast him out into a far away field to be glanced at for the rest of his time. Don’t hand him to the groom and downgrade him to the stable at the end of the yard. Don't try and pass him off to someone else as a companion and let him go somewhere strange and new at a time in his life when all he needs is you. Love him, exactly as you did when he was in his prime. He'll never stop loving you, so never stop loving him. -cromwellandlucy

Once in every equestrian’s life, they will meet a special horse. This horse wont necessarily be a Badminton winner or dressage champion. They won’t always carry... multiple titles or be the most talented with the best breeding. Very often, these horses are nothing more than ordinary. They might have the odd lump here or a strange marking there. They probably won’t tick all the boxes for conformation and they will probably have some character quirks that not everyone will be able to see past. You don’t find these horses, they find you. They can come to you by accident or hide in plain sight. They are the one rescued from the meat man or the one in the last stable at the dealing yard. They are the last horse you go to see before you give up searching or the scruffy three year old stood in a field of mud. They are the horse you never even knew you needed. People will raise an eyebrow when you say this is your best horse. Not everyone will see what you see and that’s ok because this horse will be special to you. They will unlock little things inside you and make you feel more at home than you’ve ever felt anywhere else in your life. They may not always be easy, in fact they might be anything but easy, but it doesn’t stop you loving them. I’m not saying the will follow you round the arena with no lungeline, or that you can ride them tackless down the beach... but you’ll have your own connection that is hard to describe and even harder to explain. There is no rhyme or reason as to why this horse is so special. You don’t have to have won at every event or defied death together to validate your relationship, it just happens. You won’t feel this way about another horse. Sure, there will be ones that come close and it doesn’t stop you loving any other horse just as much as this one, but this one is special. This is your heart horse. Some people stumble across their heart horse early on in their life, others wait a lifetime to meet, but somewhere out there is a horse that was made for you, so if you haven’t met them yet... be patient, they will find you. They might not always be the horse you want, but they will always be the horse you need.

Anyone who feeds Hi Pro/Step Right feeds, please read this.... Official Response to Hi-Pro's Statement (pictured below) Mr. Prevost,... I have been waiting for almost ten months to respond to your statement. I have spent thousands of dollars investigating my horses’ deaths in that time. I find it very interesting that in your statement, you mention you received clean test results and conducted a thorough investigation. In your opinion, you received clean test results. The University of Guelph, where Hi-Pro tested the feed samples, has a limit of detection of 1 PPM, meaning the labs can only test to a certain level which in turn, to my understanding, means the labs cannot conclude with 100% certainty that ionophores were not present, only that they could not find them within the detectable limit. If Hi-Pro did indeed conduct a thorough investigation, doesn’t it beg the question that Hi-Pro should have found the 0.44kg of salinomycin that was unaccounted for? I later learned this from my Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) file. It was disclosed that the 0.44kg of salinomycin was unaccounted for on the same day that my lot number 11050219 was produced. After that, I then learned that my toxicologist expert said that 0.44 kg of salinomycin is enough to kill 147 horses. In my case, I fed the Hi-Fat Step 8 feed and rolled oats. I fed no other feed besides hay, which was tested for botulism. All results came back negative. After one feeding of the suspect grain, three of my horses, who were healthy working horses, died within a 24 hour period. A fourth horse died two months later and the latest mare died after giving birth in March. In the necropsies, tell-tale signs linked their deaths to ionophore toxicosis. The pathologist tested one of the horses for over 100,000 different toxins, all of which were negative. Over these ten months, I have worked with a number of experts in different fields from all over North America to determine the cause of my horses’ deaths. The vet in charge of my case will say ionophore toxicosis is the top differential. The pathologist will say the top differential is ionophore toxicosis. The toxicologist will the say the top differential is ionophore toxicosis. How can all these people who are experts in their own field be wrong? Based on the current information, I have to ask you, Mr. Prevost, do you still stand behind the statement that you are confident your product is safe?

From Local Vets: News Flash: There is a HIGHLY VIRULENT INFLUENZA A outbreak in the Fraser Valley. There have been two areas of affected horses, one in Chilliwack area and one in Langley. At this time it isn't clear if there is a link between the two.... Symptoms - Fever - Coughing - Nasal Discharge Some have become seriously ill from it. Reducing contact with other horses for at least the next month is advisable. See more
