We are growing! Wesway is seeking Respite Workers to provide support to participants at our Wait-At-Home (WAH) service. Click on the link for more information! http://www.wesway.com/respite-worker---wait-at-home
Respite care is a crucial part of the overall support many people need when caring for a family member at home. It allows caregivers to take the time to recover from the duties of caregiving and gives them the flexibility to take care of other important aspects of their lives. Check out our video on a caregivers success because of respite care.
On December 3, 2020, we are celebrating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). On this day, we are reminded of our responsibility to better understand disability issues. We are also called to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in our communities. https://www.canada.ca//international-day-persons-with-disa
November 13th is Kindness Day. Take a moment to call a caregiver you know and ask them how they’re doing. Caregivers care, we can too. #CallACaregiver today! https://www.facebook.com/events/3471412949613328
The Wesway office will be closed on Tuesday November 9th due to building maintenance. Staff are working remotely, and will be checking their voicemail & email throughout the day. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Many caregivers say they feel alone and isolated. While family members and friends often ask how the care recipient is doing, they don’t always think to ask how the caregiver is doing. Caregivers have told us that a simple phone call can make a big difference. If you know a caregiver, take a moment to give them a call on November 13th, for Kindness Day. You can ask them how their day was, what’s new for them, or just let them know that you’re thinking of them. Caregivers care..., we can too. #CallACaregiver for Kindness Day on November 13th. https://www.facebook.com/events/3471412949613328
Every October, Children’s Aid Societies across Ontario raise awareness about the important role that individuals and communities play in supporting vulnerable children, youth, and families through the provincial Dress Purple Day campaign. The campaign is more important than ever, since the COVID-19 pandemic has created additional stressors for families, and in some cases has increased risk for the well-being and safety of children and youth.
Our office will be CLOSED on Monday for Thanksgiving and will reopen on Tuesday October 13th at 9:00am. Have a great long weekend!
Today, Wesway is acknowledging Orange Shirt Day. Orange Shirt Day is a movement that officially began in 2013 but in reality it began in 1973 when six year old Phyllis Webstad entered the St. Joseph Mission Residential School, outside of Williams Lake, BC. Young Phyllis was wearing a brand new orange shirt for her first day of school new clothes being a rare and wonderful thing for a First Nation girl growing up in her grandmother’s care - but the Mission Oblates quickly st...ripped her of her new shirt and replaced it with the school’s institutional uniform. While she only attended for one year the impact affected Ms. Webstad’s life for many years. I finally get it, that feeling of worthlessness and insignificance, ingrained in me from my first day at the mission, affected the way I lived my life for many years. Even now, when I know nothing could be further than the truth, I still sometimes feel that I don’t matter. Phyllis Webstad, Dog Creek, BC Ms. Webstad’s story is the nucleus for what has become a national movement to recognize the experience of survivors of Indian residential schools, honour them, and show a collective commitment to ensure that every child matters. The initiative calls for every Canadian to wear an orange shirt on September 30 in the spirit of healing and reconciliation.

Celebrate Family Caregiver Day!
April 7 is both Ontario Caregiver Day and National Caregiver Day. This day is a chance to recognize, celebrate and bring awareness to the incredible value caregivers add to both Ontario and Canada’s families, health care system, and economy. This day recognizes the importance of the ‘invisible unpaid work our caregivers do. Family caregivers are vital care partners for/with their family member. Without caregivers, our health care system would collapse. On top of all caregive...rs do, our caregivers must now navigate the impact of COVID-19 as they support their family members. Now more than ever, we need to keep our caregivers at the forefront of our minds and show our support. I encourage you to visit the following websites for opportunities to thank a caregiver and/or to learn valuable information about the important role of our caregivers. See more
