Update: Drive-by Santa was a success! Picture of Santa below. Unfortunately, due a recent extension of COVID-19 restrictions, the White Eagle Polish Association cannot host a traditional children's Christmas party in the Hall. Instead, we will have a "Drive-by Santa" event on Saturday, December 12, 2020 from 15:00 to 16:00 where parents or guardians can drive through the White Eagle Hall parking lot and children who have already registered will receive a gift from Santa while remaining in their vehicles.

November 11th is Remembrance Day in Canada, but it also coincides with Polish Independence Day. This year, the White Eagle Polish Association purchased a wreath to honour those who died fighting for Polish independence. Since the ceremony at the cenotaph was greatly curtailed due to COVID restrictions, a small ceremony was held at the White Eagle Hall.

COVID-19 Response (UPDATED) In response to direction from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry prohibiting gatherings in excess of 50 people, the White Eagle Hall will not be hosting any events until this Order is rescinded. There is now no expiry date on this Order. The Hall will continue to accept bookings for rentals with the understanding that events will be limited to 50 or less people.

Today is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Karol Wojtya, who became St. Pope John Paul II, the first Polish Pope.

Sad news...we would like to note the passing of long time White Eagle Polish Association member Wadysaw Niedzielski. He was quite active in the Polish community and was well known for many years as the bartender at Association events. Wieczny odpoczynek racz jemu da, Panie, A wiato wiekuista niechaj mu wieci. They're not peculiar...they're delicious!

The Polish Easter Basket Traditions wiconka, meaning "the blessing of the Easter baskets," is one of the most enduring and beloved Polish traditions on Holy S...aturday. The tradition of food blessing at Easter, is said to date from the 7th century in its basic form, the more modern form containing bread and eggs (symbols of resurrection and Christ) are said to date from the 12th century. Baskets containing a sampling of Easter foods are brought to church to be blessed on Holy Saturday. The basket is traditionally lined with a white linen or lace napkin and decorated with sprigs of boxwood (bukszpan), the typical Easter evergreen. Poles take special pride in preparing a decorative and tasteful basket with crisp linens, occasionally embroidered for the occasion, and boxwood and ribbon woven through the handle. Observing the creativity of other parishioners is one of the special joys of the event. The foods in the baskets have a symbolic meaning: Bread (chleb) - represents Christ's gift of "daily bread" and redemptive graces Colored eggs (pisanki) - indicate hope, new life and Christ rising from his tomb Sausage&Meat (kiebasa i miso) are symbolic of great joy and abundance in celebration of Christ's resurrection Horseradish (chrzan) - a reminder of the bitterness and harshness of the Passion of Jesus Vinegar (ocet) - symbolizes the sour wine given to Jesus on the cross Salt&Pepper (sól i pieprz) - to add zest to life and preserve us from corruption Easter Lamb (Baranek Wielkanocny) - made of sugar or butter - the symbol of the Paschal Lamb. This reminds us of the good will of Christ that we should have towards all things Easter cake (Babka) -a round loaf of rich, eggy, yeast dough with raisins reminiscent of the risen Lord Boxwood Twigs (gazki bukszpanu) - are attached to the basket as signs of joy and new life in the season of spring and in celebration of the Resurrection
