Finally blue skies and sunshine and yet more whales! Orca and humpbacks and sometimes even both! During the smokey times we saw whales on every trip and now with the sun and blue skies back we are hoping to continue an amazing sightings record right to the end of the month. Normally our season would go to the end of October but we will be finished Sept 30th due to lack of tourism. Come see us soon! Here is a gorgeous sunshine lit humpback named Slate by naturalist Ashley Keegan!

As we go into the September long weekend we are still looking to take our local supporters out on the water to see what is in your watery backyard. To continue thanking our neighbourhood whale enthusiasts, we have extended our Staycation Promo to our open-boat Eagle Eyes! We have space on Sunday and Monday and are operating daily tours until the end of September. We have seen whales on ALL but one trip! Photo: Kathryn Taylor (cropped and zoomed)

Here are some very cool images taken by our naturalist @pascalecslater. A lucky tour got to witness this harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) hunt a salmon, and then watched it tear its meal apart while a gull waited nearby for scraps. Salmon are undoubtedly a vital component of our local ecosystems, providing food for our critically endangered population of Southern Resident Killer Whales in addition to bears, seals, sea lions, eagles, and more. As anadromous species, they contribu...te to both fresh water and salt water ecosystems. Not only are they a major player in our food web, but they also provide nutrients and fertilizer to our forests when their decaying bodies wash ashore in the river beds after spawning, or when a bear or eagle leave remnants of their prey ashore in riparian areas. Aside from being a massive contributor to our economy, salmon also have both cultural and intrinsic significance. You can help salmon populations by learning more, lobbying your local government to invest in restoration projects, and choosing wild, Ocean Wise recommended sources at supermarkets and restaurants. @ Wild Whales Vancouver See more

Whale watching tours aren't just fun and informative, they are also an important aid to researchers in this region. On all of our tours we record sightings data to share with a myriad of researchers and NGOs, including Keta Coastal Conservation. Some of our Marine Naturalists are able to photograph the whales we encounter, which help us identify individuals. The photos you see in this post are of one humpback calf that has been seen in our local waters for the first time this... year. This was one of the first full fluke shots captured of this particular whale, and if you look below the tail flukes... these photos also tell us that this baby is a female! Our Marine Naturalist, @Pascale C-Slater, was able to capture these photographs which provide us with vital information that we can share with researchers. This is just one of the ways we help protect these animals we love so much!! Keta Coastal Conservation gave Pascale the opportunity to name this whale to thank her for her contribution. Wild Whales fans, we are pleased to introduce you to Harpy! Why Harpy? Harpy's mom's name is Raptor, and a harpy eagle is a type of raptor that can be found in Mexico. Mexico is also the breeding ground that mom, Raptor, has been cross-matched to, and likely where Harpy was born! Great job and great name, Pascale!!!

Weekend is upon us. YAY! We have space on our semi-covered boat which is sheltered from rain or sun. We have you covered! So far we have seen whales 100% of our trips. Humpbacks and orca are around! We have even seen humpback mamas with their little (relatively speaking) calves and to add to the Mom mix seal pups are here!

HAPPY PRIDE FROM WILD WHALES VAN!! . . This is what we affectionately call a rainblow, when the droplets of a whale’s breath are reflected in such a way to dazzle us in this colourful, prismatic display! .... . @vitalocean See more

Happy Monday everyone! This is Stanley, or T123A! He’s a favourite around here, a sentiment shared by staff and customers alike. When we asked one of our regular whale watchers why he was her favourite, she said Well first, he’s handsome - and we think that sums it up pretty nicely. Shout out to our pal @celine_dl_m . . Join us on an intimate West Coast adventure and maybe you’ll meet Stanley for yourself! .... . by the mega talented @vitalocean See more
