It’s another Throwback Thursday! Continuing on our musical double feature, Randall House presents Nova Scotia By the Sea! This piece was dedicated by the composer, L.N. Miller to the Rotary Club of New Glasgow. This piece is about having pride in our province and remembering that no matter where we may roam, there will always be a home for us here. Happy Holidays from Randall House! We’d like to share this very special #throwbackthursday and show you this lovely picture from the Acadia Theatre (now, the Al Whittle Theatre). Al Whittle was Canada’s youngest theatre manager when he began working at the Acadia Theatre, and his love of the theatre and Wolfville itself is why the theatre is now named after him. While he was the theatre manager, he and his employees went all out decorating for the holiday season! Absolutely wonderful job, Al! Randall House Museum will reopen in the Spring. It’s Throwback Thursday! And today, we’re looking at a fun little tune from 1898 called Beautiful Minas Bay! With lyrics and music by C.F. Rathbone, this Atlantic anthem is all about the beauty and grace of the Minas Basin. We have a special video with a recording of this song, transcribed by one of our 2020 Summer Students! We hope you enjoy our rendition of Beautiful Minas Bay! Look out for another musical number this month! Randall House Museum will reopen in the Spring. Look out for more details.

The importance of December 6th is twofold. Today, Canadians recognize both the National Day of Remembrance and Action on the Violence against Women and the Anniversary of the Halifax Explosion. Both of these recognitions are extremely important to Canadian history. It is easy to get caught up in the exciting and happy aspects of history, but we must put equal importance on our nation’s and our world’s dark and tragic past. The Halifax Explosion of 1917 could be felt across ne...arly all of Nova Scotia. With nearly 2000 deaths, 9000s injured, and countless buildings, homes, and lives destroyed, our province is extremely grateful and fortunate for the help we received from our neighbouring towns, provinces, and states. The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women has been set on the anniversary of the 1989 mass shooting at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal, which witnessed the terrible murder of fourteen women. No one should be subject to violence, regardless of background, gender, orientation, race, or ethnicity. This day heralds the push for change while still acknowledging a day of mourning. Randall House Museum stands for justice and peace. We would like to recognize this day, which is so important politically, socially, and historically. Randall House Museum will reopen in the Spring. Look out for more details.

It’s #LoveTheatreDay! Randall House Museum has always had ties to Wolfville’s thriving theatre community, with actors, directors, tech crew members, pit band members, and more involved with the management of our little museum! This past summer, we also had an exhibit on the Al Whittle Theatre. Originally built as a hotel, the Al Whittle has been a theatre since 1911, when The Opera House opened its doors. This theatre had the ability to present both stage and screen produc...tions to the Wolfville community. As the years went by, the theatre focused more on films than stage production, however its most recent re-opening in 2004 welcomed stage production once again. Wolfville’s theatre has switched ownership several times and has been called The Opera House, The Orpheum, The Acadia Theatre, and The Al Whittle Theatre. We tip our metaphorical hats and throw a digital bouquet to our wonderful theatre colleagues! Thank you for being you and sharing your art with us! Randall House Museum will reopen in the Spring. Look out for more details.

Randall House Museum would like to extend our dearest wishes to Veterans, both passed and living, on this Day of Remembrance. You have sacrificed so much, in some cases your very own lives, in the name of peace. A single day of remembrance pales in comparison to the days, weeks, and years of service that these brave folks of all backgrounds have given to Canada. The Honour Roll we will hear or read today is not just a list of names, it is a list of heroes, who only believed in the very best for the world. Whether you live on in Heaven or Earth, in any reach of the soul, today we honour you and we thank you. We will remember them. Randall House Museum will reopen in the Spring. Look out for more details.

Established in 1992, Women’s History Month was created to promote the understanding and acknowledgement of the importance of women in history. The Canadian government chose October because as of October 18th, 1929, women were finally allowed to become a part of the senate. This decision really recognized women as integral parts of society which, of course they always were. If one does not include the history of women, they lose an extremely large part of the story. History ...erased women for a long time, only allowing glimpses into their lives, and therefore shadowing so much for present day folk. And as the world begrudgingly opens its eyes to the injustices of all people, we must fight to keep each voice heard, whether they are speaking now through YouTube videos and Facebook posts, or in years gone by through quill and word of mouth. Wolfville is very lucky to know the history of Mona Parsons but there are other heroines that have been silenced by the shifting times. Women are not characters in a man’s myth. They are often time the very reason a man is writing. Randall House Museum would like to recognize Women’s History Month and extend our dearest thanks to the women across the globe who changed the world. From Eve of Ethiopia to women of today, thank you. You will no longer be erased from history. Randall House Museum will reopen in the Spring. Look out for more details.
