As I sit here with a glass of wine thinking about what to write about this carving, there is so much that comes to mind. Over the last 3 1/2 months there have been many successes and just as many failures to overcome to bring this to a close. If you’ve followed this from the very beginning, you know just how much this particular painting has meant to me for so many years. You also know just how many problems I encountered that needed creative solutions to overcome them. You... also know there were several portions of this carve that were done, then redone, sometimes multiple times until I was satisfied it was to the best of my ability. The hardest part by far was making a floating corpse, held only by what is spiderwebs made from strands of cotton picked from a cotton ball. That portion of the carve took a week all on its own, having been done and redone three times to get it right. I will not ramble on, but I will say I’m approaching 300 hours on this carve, and yes, it is available. At the moment I am accepting reasonable offers.....and please, no tire kickers. Be PayPal ready, you never know, I just might say yes. It’s not always the highest price that wins, repeat customers and faithful followers always stand to get a deal. Well, I thought I was done with the roughing in. Turns out I was wrong. I had a good look at it and decided I wanted a lot more depth, so I’ve deepened out the deep parts even more and laid out the faces. I knew this carve was going to be a challenge, but had no idea just how big the challenge would be. There are so many complex shapes and compound curves on the tree that it’s taking significantly longer than I thought. It’ll be worth it. If there was ever a carve to take... my time and give 110%, this is the one. Finished up a necessary studio upgrade......the bench under the shelf was dark, the shelves blocked all the light from the pot lights in the ceiling making it hard to work in certain areas. Problem solved with some $20 LED lights from eBay. My only mistake was getting cool lights instead of warm......but the difference is still night and day. Work is progressing on getting all the shapes and planes laid out. This is the most difficult carve to date, especially with being two coins thick, carved in the round, all the while keeping in mind I can’t go too deep because it is hollowed out for the lights. It’s making it complex......and that keeps my attention. Let’s keep laying it out...I have the original image memorized from the years of admiring it, but I’m spending more time examining @theartofmichaelwhelan origin...al work than I am carving, and I’m constantly catching details I’ve missed through the years. So.......almost a full day setback on the Lovecrafts Nightmare carve. Normally with my carvings I follow a routine that makes sense to me. First I do the carving, then the toning, then the assembly. With the way I’m doing this carve that routine isn’t possible because the tree is two coins thick, so before I can join them together to carve them I had to hollow out the middle and install the lights, then waterproof the lights for the toning step.... So, I installed the LED lights, waterproofed them, then pinned the two halves together so I could carve it. Normally when I drill the holes for the lights, I chamfer the edges of the holes so the sharp edges don’t damage the tiny, delicate little wires. Well, I forgot this time. When I was peening the last pin to hold it all together, the sharp edge cut the wire right off at the back of the tree. FML. So, all that work to drill it all apart, replace both lights, rewaterproof it, remake the pins, etc......a full day lost. Shit happens......guess the job was so nice I wanted to do it twice. It’s a sad weekend......with overnight lows getting close to dipping to zero it was time to pack up the summer studio and move back indoors so no equipment gets damaged by the cold. On a positive.....no more running back and forth between the two places to use tools, they are all back in the same place and I have a little room to move again. So the tree is cut out, hollowed out, and assembled. I chose to pin it together instead of soldering it. Solder will hold, but there is no such thing as pure copper solder, and I didn’t want to risk a solder line showing in the final piece, so just like I did with holding the coins together to cut them, I drilled them out, polished the mating parts, pinned them, and peened the pins for a solid hold. The coins have been sanded and trued up to mate together perfectly, and I needed to make sure when cutting the shapes out that they are exactly the same. I did not want to glue them, so I decided to drill and pin them together for a secure cold connection. The pins are placed in the waste portion, so they will not interfere in the portions needed for the carving.... Once the pins were placed, I peened the ends, making for a rock solid hold.
