Found this short-tailed shrew stumbling on a trail during yesterday's hike. Judging by all the tracks surrounding it in the snow, I figured I must have unexpectedly interrupted a predator in action. The shrew had no outward physical injuries but was a bit slow. I moved it off the trail where it scurried to the base of a tree to live another day. Yes, these shrews are cute, keep forest soils aerated, and play a big role in ecosystems by eating pests. The short-tailed shrew has a wide range in Canada but is unseen by most. You are more likely to see its tunnels beneath the snow in winter than ever see one above ground running around out in the open. They only have a lifespan of barely more than a year. But their role as a food source for many raptors and predators is big

When in the field doing photography work, you always have an eye on the question: Could the customer use this image in their marketing and digital materials and how? The days of being a photographer and having tunnel vision of only magazine covers or selling images to magazines is long long long gone

I now work full-time doing videography & photography for conservation, but years ago I got my start working with small businesses. For years Andy's Drive In has supported me... and I don't ever forget that. This week I dropped by for a video shoot and did a short vlog too :)

Awesome Friday working with @lpblt in some incredible landscapes. One of the forests where we were filming later in the day is recognized as one of the oldest old growth forests remaining in southern Ontario

So stoked about a new conservation documentary that I'm filming and producing. It's taken two years of filming work to finally be able to start the production process this month. Many more hours ahead #scicomm #conservation
