Today we remember a tragic day in Nova Scotias history. On May 9, 1992, 26 men died in a preventable disaster at the Westray Mine, including Glenn Martin. Today we honour Glenns memory, and the memory of all those lost that day. We hold close in our thoughts those who still live with this incredible loss, and the knowledge that a loved one is never coming home.
In Nova Scotia, noise-induced hearing loss is considered an occupational disease when caused by factors in the workplace. By the time its noticeable, it could be too late. Workplace injuries hurt the most at home.
In Nova Scotia, home care and continuing care have the highest workplace injury rates in the province, leaving too many people unable to do the things they once enjoyed with their families. Workplace injuries hurt the most at home.
In Nova Scotia, about 6,000 people and their families are impacted by a workplace injury each year. While the hazards we see and identify may seem small to us, the impact of our actions can change lives forever. Workplace injuries hurt the most at home.
As crews in LFAs 33 and 34 were preparing for Dumping Day, safety advocates across the province were reminding them about the importance of wearing PFDs. Timmy Saulnier, a fisherman out of Meteghan Wharf, shared this powerful photo with us. "Every time I sail out of port these three girls remind me to be safe, work smart and get back home to them and my wife," he said. Workplace injuries hurt the most at home. Who do you work safely for?
Wear your PFD for your daughter, who cant wait to show you her latest soccer move. For your best friend, who also happens to be the person you married. For your rec hockey team, who can always count on your famous backhand. Wear it for the ones who wouldnt know what to do without you. Workplace injuries hurt the most at home.
The importance of a safer fishing industry in Nova Scotia is perhaps most understood by those who have lost someone at sea. Hear their powerful stories.
Due to the forecast tomorrow we have reschedule the drill for tomorrow afternoon in Clarks Harbour until Thursday Nov 8th at 1pm
Muscle strain from lifting is the most common workplace injury and the back is most often affected. Find out how to prevent a back injury. http://www.worksafeforlife.ca//Pr/Musculoskeletal-Injuries
In Water Fight, a home care worker sustains a back injury while helping a patient on the job. Its a situation far too many Nova Scotians have faced: home care and continuing care are the sectors with the highest injury rates in the province, with back injuries being the most common culprit. Muscle strain from lifting is the most common workplace injury and the back is most often affected.
While we tend to think about workplace injuries as sudden and dramatic, they can often develop gradually. In Recital, a mother sustains occupational noise-induced hearing loss and can no longer clearly hear her daughter practicing the piano. In Nova Scotia, noise-induced hearing loss is considered an occupational disease when the injury is caused by factors in a workplace. Unlike cuts, bruises or sprains, hearing loss is rarely painful and takes years to develop. But by the time its noticeable, its often too late. About 600 new hearing loss claims are processed each year. An average of $6 million in claims benefits are spent on about 5,000 claims annually.
It should never take a loss to put whats important into perspective. In Dinner, we see a mother struggle to break her habit of setting four places at the table after her husband dies from a fall on the job. After realizing her mistake, she puts on a brave face for her children. We see the ways they are all forced to readjust their daily lives after loss. On any given day in Canada, three people go to work and do not return home. The only acceptable number of workplace fatal...ities is zero. www.threadsoflife.ca
