Last day to get your asparagus! We will be open until we are sold out.
What was the conclusion of our research when there are more curly asparagus? Inconclusive, we'll have to test again next year, just joking. It seems that at the start of the season or any time the soil was compacted, like after a rain, the spears struggled to go through and would curl. Curious minds can rest easy now you have the answer!
Asparagus Fact #20 - Last fact this season, I bet you didn't think we'd have so many! In 2019, there were a total of 92 commercial asparagus producers in Ontario with a total of 3,689 acres in production.
Asparagus Fact #19 - In 2011, Joey Chestnut won the asparagus eating competition at the annual Asparagus Festival in downtown Stockton, CA. Chestnut set a world's record by eating 9 pounds, 5.2 ounces of fried asparagus in 10 minutes. Dare anyone try and beat his record?

All good things must come to an end. That's right, asparagus season is nearing a close.The barn will only be open for a few more days. And this will be the last Saturday of the year. We will be open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday if supply lasts so stop by to get your fix before it is too late!
Asparagus Fact #18 - Who loves asparagus? We do! The top asparagus importers in 2016 were the United States (214,735 tonnes), followed by Germany (24,484 tonnes), and Canada (19,224 tonnes).

Asparagus fact #17 - Gardners listen up! Asparagus is prone to rust and the damages caused by the asparagus beetle but when planted close, tomato plants are known to repel the beetle. It is also thought that asparagus may repel some harmful root nematodes that affect tomato plants.
Asparagus Fact #16 - What's in a name? The Greeks and Romans used the Persian word, asparagi, to refer to the vegetable. The first written mention of asparagus in English was in 1000 AD, and the peasants at refer to it as sparrow grass. The word we use now, asparagus, didn’t appear popular until the 1900s!
