Could a big trench for a gas pipeline rip up Queens Quay? The scenic bike path along the Waterfront is Enbridge Gas’s first choice for a 4.5 kilometre dig for new gas pipes. York Quay Neighbourhood Association (YQNA) strongly objects! Tax payers paid $130 million for this award-winning promenade in 2015. Crowds of tourists and people from the GTA flock to the beauty and cultural events here. YQNA asks Enbridge to pick Harbour Street instead for these gas pipes. You can too by emailing: [email protected] before the deadline on February 22, 2020. http://yqna.ca/?p=3055

A letter from Waterfront for All to Federal Minister Marc Garneau re the proceeds of sale of the Port Authority land at 30 Bay Street. Subject: Sale of 30 Bay for $96 million; PortsToronto should be accountable to the public Dear Minister Garneau:... Please find enclosed a letter from Waterfront from All, an umbrella group of citizens organizations interested in the revitalization of Toronto’s Waterfront. We urge greater public accountability and transparency as to the proceeds of the recent sale of 30 Bay Street near Toronto Harbour for $96 million, by PortsToronto. You recently approved this windfall by granting Supplementary Letters Patent giving permission for the sale. This huge amount of public money flowed entirely to PortsToronto, to be spent entirely as it sees fit. It should have at least gone into the general coffers of the federal government. It should NOT be left entirely to the discretion of PortsToronto, an unelected and unaccountable port authority under the Canada Marine Act, often at odds with local residents, as to what happens to such a large amount of public money. There are many competing funding needs around the Waterfront, now undergoing a multi-decade rebirth, one of the largest revitalization projects in the world. It is irresponsible to allow one agency, notoriously lacking in transparency, to allocate the money to its own pet projects that may well be at cross-purposes with waterfront revitalization as a whole. This case will serve as a precedent for the future. There are other hugely valuable properties around Toronto Harbour of which PortsToronto is custodian. Can it sell those lands too and keep the huge proceeds to spend as it pleases? All three levels of government, through Waterfront Toronto, co-fund and have an interest in the revitalization of Toronto’s waterfront. There must be transparency among all stakeholders as to what happens to that money. All three levels of government, and the public, should have input.
