What has Covid done for me. Well, my entire big project world came crashing down around me! And I seeing this went running to the usual depression. But slowly, ...after realizing that this forced stop must be a gift, started coming out of my shell. I stoped looking at others and started looking for myself. I had experimented a bit with fusing before, but now I found myself right here in fused glass, combining painting and fusing. And now I have to thank Covid for this new me that I have. See more

Hi. I’m new to the group and doing stained glass inspired by my career as a scientist. The piece shown is called Loss. It’s an image of the molecular structur...e of a protein known as beta-amyloid, found in the plaques of brains from people with Alzheimer’s disease. Proteins are chains of small molecules amino acids, and the beta-amyloid chains tend to aggregate forming plaques in the brain. (There are ten chains shown in the image 5 on top, 5 below.) It’s believed that these plaques may contribute to the symptoms of Alzheimers’. The colors were designed to fade as the chains recede, symbolizing (1) the idea of dissolving the plaques with some form of therapy as a treatment for the disease, and (2) the loss of memory associated with Alzheimers’.
