Democratisation of Technology and Connectivity as a Social Policy Catalonia will have the first open 5G laboratory that will serve the entire country, both urban and rural areas, and that will also be open to international initiatives. The project is born from the agreement between the consortium 5G Barcelona and Orange. The purpose of this agreement is to implement a laboratory in which to experiment with the latest IoT technologies and with 5G NR equipment for validating se...rvices in a 5G research and pre-commercial stage, in real environments and with a view to reducing project development times. Throughout this interview with the Minister for Digital Policy and Public Administration of the Regional Government of Catalonia, Jordi Puigneró, we will learn more about this program as well as its implications for Catalan and European citizens.

Next generation IT-girls: pioneering the way Publié le 3 août 2018 par Carla H., Director, Public Partnerships at UNICEF While access to technology has been expanding generally, the gender gap in internet usage persists, and girls remain notably underrepresented in technological fields. For many, technology is ubiquitousso much so that in 2003, the United Nations (UN) designated access to technology and digital space a fundamental human right. The ever-expanding reach of tec...hnology can be seen among young people, too. Today, 830 million young people80% of the youth population in 104 countriesare online. The importance of technology in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals cannot be under-estimatedparticularly as it pertains to promoting girls and women’s empowermentand a number of initiatives to address the technological gender gap are already underway. One of the most promising of these projects is IT Girls, a pioneer initiative driven by partnership between UNDP, UNICEF, and UN Women in Bosnia and Herzegovina. IT Girls believes that all women and girls deserve equal access to technology and to digital skills, as well as the knowledge and information that will enable them to be proportionately represented in the field. As such, the programme focuses on empowering the skills of young women in Bosnia and Herzegovina in information and communications technology (ICT), along with access to professional opportunities in the field, and increased confidence. In 2016, the first IT Girls project was a striking successit delivered several education programmes in web development, online and digital safety, and presentation skills to more than 100 adolescent girls in urban and rural locations. Much of this success is owed to the strength of the IT Girls partnership. Three UN agencies UNDP, UNICEF, and UN Womenwork collaboratively, in accordance with their respective mandates, and in cohortleveraging their unique strengths and comparative advantages. As the initiative has grown, its efforts have evolved and expanded. Today, IT Girls is focused on providing girls with practical ICT skills as early as primary school, and on transforming how computer science is taught in schools. UNICEF’s expertise and established partnerships with the ministry of education, schools, and teachers has been critical to this effort, and its impact on young women and girls is clear. In the words of Sofija, a 13-year old "IT Girl" who has completed her first training: Now, I have a feeling that I can code whatever I want, and I feel like an IT Super Girl!
