Happy Friday! We’re relaxing into the weekend with this lovely piece from the AGP #PermanentCollection. This watercolour was gifted to the Art Gallery of Peterborough in 1987 by the late Margaret L. Heideman. Margaret was one of the founding members of the AGP and a champion of the arts in Peterborough. Over the years she gifted several works to the AGP Permanent Collection and worked tirelessly to promote the arts in the Peterborough and Kawartha region. Margaret’s patrona...ge to the Gallery was and continues to be an essential way to support artists of this region and her decision to place works in a public gallery is a gift that keeps on giving. Happy Friday Friends Today we’re looking at this stunning piece by John William Beatty (1869-1941) from the AGP #PermanentCollection! J.W. Beatty was a prominent Canadian artist and educator who lived and worked in Toronto at the turn of the nineteenth century. A contemporary of the Group of Seven, Beatty was also interested in exploring the landscape as a uniquely Canadian identity. Though never formally a part of the Group, over the years Beatty befriended and went on se...veral sketching trips with prominent members such as Lawren Harris and A.Y. Jackson. This piece, titled Easter Time, Kearney Ontario, is representative of the en plein air sketches that the artist would produce on such trips. You can imagine the artist sitting at this site, blocking out the light and colour as he sees it before him, capturing the serenely curving lines of the shoreline; the artist’s hand clear in the marks of the water’s surface. Beatty's work is also considered to have been an early influence on Canadian artist, Tom Thomson. The two were close friends and sketched together many times in Algonquin Park. It was John William Beatty who built the memorial cairn for Thomson after his death at Canoe Lake in 1917. His contributions and influences on the Ontario art scene were numerous. Beatty was a longstanding member of the Arts & Letters Club in Toronto, an important early meeting place for artists, and was elected president in 1912. He began teaching at the Ontario College of Art (now the Ontario College of Art and Design University) that same year and continued to teach there up until his death in 1941. As such, Beatty taught and influenced many celebrated Canadian artists, such as A.J. Casson and Doris McCarthy. It was a former student and local artist, Rev. Ernest Gilmour Smith, who donated this piece to the Art Gallery of Peterborough’s Permanent Collection in 1980. It’s #ThrowbackThursday and these joyful photos of Opening Receptions past are giving us all the warm fuzzies on this cold wintery week. We’ve missed being able to gather together and celebrate with you. But this year has proven that even when we are apart, art can bring us together. Leading up to #GivingTuesday on December 1st, we’ll be sharing more images and stories that celebrate the work we love to do in our community. We invite you to consider donating to the Art Gallery of Peterborough this giving season. Book your visit to see Presently, a juried exhibition, featuring the work of 46 artists from across Canada, currently on view at the Art Gallery of Peterborough Carl Beam discussed the artists’ responsibility in image-making, the non-neutrality of art, and the importance of the relationship between the work and the viewer in a series of talks given during his residency at Artspace which resulted in The Columbus Project: Phase 1 in 1989. Artwork is a site of exchange betwe...en the artist and the audience, an offering of insight, insistent thought or wonder, and a conduit for connection; to summarize, Beam said, A good piece of artwork should have implications in everyday life (Carl Beam in, The Columbus Project Phase 1: Artspace & Art Gallery of Peterborough, 1989). In September of this year, the AGP promoted a call for submissions inviting artists to submit new, recent, or past works that resonate with the contemporary moment. A jury of Canadian artists and curators selected from works submitted by 179 artists living across Canada and beyond. This moment, complex and layered, merits a complicated response. Gathered within this exhibition are works that bring forward a myriad of emotion. Expressed through painting, needlework and textile, installation, film and video, photography, pottery, image transfer, drawing, text, collage, printmaking, assemblage performance, and sculpture, a conversation between artists who may never meet face-to-face hums and ticks in aggregate. Presently runs through February 14, 2021. Today we’re looking at the work of George Raab from the AGP #PermanentCollection. George Raab is a world-renowned printmaker who lives and works from his historic Millbrook home and studio. He has come to be associated with this region of Ontario, having lived and practiced his art form here for over forty years. George Raab is dedicated to the preservation of environmentally sensitive land. My images are not unique and spectacular landforms, says George, but bits and pi...eces of a familiar landscape. They are a cry for the preservation of the wild lands we desperately need in order to know ourselves. Through his etchings, Raab hopes to make us aware of the beauty of small segments of nature which we can look for and experience daily. He refers to the use of the photograph in the selection process very much as a 'found' image. By framing segments with his camera viewfinder, Raab focuses on the natural life cycle of a swamp, showing us that as trees die, other plant forms begin to grow. A quiet happening in nature takes place before our eyes. Illi-Maria Tamplin, 1991. George Raab, Dawn, 1978, etching on paper, ed. AP. Imagination is my guide. I follow it and lead it into a world largely built on my drawings. It may be in response to a real-time visual phenomenon found in my travels, or to the close-up intrigue of a busy table in the studio or kitchen. Inspiration takes an unimpeded excursion through a mix of overlapping memories and images. Ivan Kenneth Eyre, 1998 Today we’re looking at Woodland Terrace by Ivan Eyre from the AGP #PermanentCollection which is currently installed in the ...main gallery. Eyre’s art practice spans five decades and includes sculpture, drawing, print, and painting depicting imagined subjects with roots in our experienced world and are informed by psychology and his deep interest in the mind. 1: Ivan Eyre, Woodland Terrace, 1973, oil and acrylic on canvas, gift of Mr. John Cowan, 1988. 2: Detail of: Ivan Eyre, Woodland Terrace, 1973, oil and acrylic on canvas, gift of Mr. John Cowan, 1988. #AGPtbo #IvanEyre #ContemporaryArt

For this week’s #PermanentCollection post, we’re looking at the work of Kenneth Lochhead. I like to paint. As an eclectic painter I am in love with the nature of form, and human innovation. I have learned that plastic form, with its elements of colour, light, line and space, is the essence of coherent visual expression. I suppose my painting is based primarily on the art of painting with the hope that it transcends to the art in painting. I like to think that there are no r...ules, just meaningful principles that free imaginative pursuits through painting. Kenneth Lochhead, University of Regina Archives #FunFact: This work was originally a birthday gift to fellow artist and friend, Ronald Bloore. He signed it with the following: The mystery of life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced. Happy Birthday Ron. Love Ken & Joanne. May 29, 1975." This work is currently on view in the exhibit: Speaking Through, works from the Permanent Collection, until October 4th, 2020. Don’t miss it -- give us a call and book your visit! [I]mages are entangled with thingness. They are ubiquitous, inherently reflexive, and evasive. Images are not only representations or appearances, but also objects that contain surface, substance, and memory. - Sasha Opeiko, Artist Talk, January 19, 2020 This is your last chance to see 217 by Sasha Opeiko at the AGP. The exhibition includes a series of graphite drawings and 3D printed objects based on images sourced from an article outlining the initial investigations of se...ction 217 in the 4th block of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which contains a large, highly radioactive mass of melted matter, formed following the nuclear meltdown in 1986 and referred to as the Elephant’s Foot. Happy Friday! Today we’re looking at the work of local artist, Ray McGirl. This work was recently donated to the Art Gallery of Peterborough’s #PermanentCollection by one of the artist’s long-time friends, Claire Hogenkamp. These paintings have big meaning for me. I was very close to Ray, and he was not easy to be close to yet somehow, we managed. The paintings are of the shoreline at my cottage where I’ve been most of my life, so it was doubly touching to receive them. ...They’re beautiful and capture the spirit of the place very well. Claire Hogenkamp Ray McGirl (1946-2014) was a Peterborough artist who explored many styles, including realism and abstraction. He was part of a group of Peterborough artists who were active in the community, including Peter Barron and Steven Vero, who are also included in the AGP Permanent Collection. This week we’re featuring the work of Shaan Syed from our #PermanentCollection This recently acquired piece is on view for the first time at the AGP as part of the exhibition: Offering, works from the Permanent Collection. The shape bridges the abstract and representational, it can be read as waves or mountains thereby connecting it to landscape and that tradition within representational painting. Dragging the thick oil paint across the surface of the painting with a lar...ge brush in one direction was a way of both accentuating the surface and also negating the expectation of the painting acting as a window. I saw this action as a form of cancelling out any image or scene from happening, reiterating a modernist idea that painting is simply material added to a surface. The polyfilla swipes that became a part of these paintings were a further cancelling out. Using a material that is supposed to ‘fill in’, I was intrigued also by the meeting of the seductive oil paint and the more utilitarian and ‘dead’ material of polyfilla. The forms the swipes took were like animated gestures that reiterated the flatness of the painting surface and echoed the movements the limbs of a body can make in the manner of a semaphore giving signs or signals. The monochrome part of the paintings I saw as ‘stage legs’ - a term used in stage design to describe a fictionalized painted scene that is wheeled on and off stage as a backdrop to a scene. Shaan Syed Come check it out in person by booking your visit to the AGP! For this week’s #PermanentCollection post we’re sharing the work of Sanaz Mazinani Mazinani is an Iranian Canadian multidisciplinary artist, curator, and educator based in San Francisco and Toronto. Sanaz Mazinani’s Conference of the Birds series uses images of the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street protests to propose new networks of cultural coexistence. By literally placing images of these two distinct movements next to one another, and digitally recombining them into... patterns that entwine, Mazinani explains, I have bound the people in these movements together. To me these patterned works become a symbol for the global relationships between the public. Repetition and reproducibility empowers images with the ability to construct and define history. With this work I aim to use the semiotics of pattern to reflect upon the possibilities of coexistence in a globalized world. For more, check out her website at: https://www.sanazmazinani.com/conference-of-the-birds You can see these three works in our current main gallery Exhibition: Offering: works from the Permanent Collection.
