To our most valued clients- please note that we are continuing to book our appointments in advance! Currently we are booking approximately 3 weeks out, so please plan ahead when booking time sensitive visits. These types of appointments may include puppy/kitten vaccines, spay/neuter surgeries, dentistry procedures, recheck appointments, medication refill appointments, alternative therapies and preg-checking for cattle. As always we see emergencies immediately, and do our best to accommodate necessary appointments as they arise, but please keep in mind booking in advance will help to ensure your appointment is guaranteed. Thank you for all of the support, we look forward to continuing to care for your amazing animals!

** WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT ** Continuing Harley’s Journey (Part 2) Finally the day has arrived for Harley’s second surgery! Dr. Dave Walker performed Harley’s fracture repair, and a plate was placed to support the healing bone. A splint was no longer needed on this leg for added support, so Harley only had to try to maneuver on one splinted leg from now on.... Harley recovered well from his anesthetic and was much more comfortable afterwards. So much so, that he even wanted to put some weight on this leg to move around in his kennel! This was great news, and now we needed to wait and see if Harley would urinate on his own too! With added support of slings to get around, Harley continued with outdoor breaks to sun himself and get some fresh air. We also added in laser therapy to encourage quicker wound healing and additional pain control. His splint was still being removed regularly so that his wound could be cleaned, debrided, and dressed. Tissue debridement (removing dead tissue) from the wound as needed, is something that commonly happens with an extensive injury such as this. Debriding away the necrotic tissue promotes good blood flow to healthy tissue and improves healing time. The unfortunate part of this (especially in a forelimb injury) is that as dead tissue is removed, it opens the wound back up again and now forces us to heal by second intention. This means that we cannot suture the wound and have to allow it to slowly granulate in until healed. This is where laser therapy is exceptional in it’s healing properties! Harley stayed in hospital with us for 6 days before he finally peed on his own outside!! The whole team received this news and we were all so happy for him! There may have even been some tears! This was great news, as we knew he was able to gain bladder control from here on out! Harley’s discharge to his Dad was scheduled optimistically for the following day, but we all knew he still had a long road ahead of him. Stay tuned for Part 3 of Harley’s journey.

It has been about 4 months since we started with curbside care due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Our biggest observation through this has been how much we miss having our clients in the building with us! We know it’s hard for you to not be with your pet every step of the way, and we wanted to give you a glimpse of what the process looks like when your pet comes for an appointment or surgery with us. Trust us, our staff love to give hugs, cuddles and treats to your adorable fur babies during their stay!

It is going to be a hot one today!! Keep your pets safe by providing water and shade. Don’t leave them in your vehicle and keeps walks short - mind the hot concrete on their paws. Short nosed dogs (brachycephalic) are prone to overheating faster than other breeds, so keep a close eye out for excessive panting and lethargy. In extreme cases vomiting, diarrhea, and convulsions. ... We are always available if you have any questions or concerns at 403.901.1800.

Don’t let West Nile Virus Get You Down! West Nile Virus (WNV) is not new to us, and we have seen cases in horses within Wheatland County in the past few years. This virus is transmitted by mosquitos and as such, is prevalent in the equine environment, especially during spring and summer. WNV can cause neurologic symptoms such as tremors, head tilt, facial or limb paralysis, hyperexcitability, colic, recumbency or even death. The weather as of late seeing both an increase in moisture and heat, provide the ideal breeding ground for mosquitos. Be sure to protect your herd with routine vaccinations for mosquito born illnesses and regular insect control such as fly spray. For more information, contact your Veterinarian.

We are excited to watch Strathmore’s fireworks show tonight to continue the celebration of Canada Day! With the change in weather yesterday from sunny and warm- to funnel cloud advisories, we were happy to see the town pick a new date to enjoy the fireworks. This is always a wonderful event for our community and we love the show they put on! Whether it be loud noises from fireworks or loud noises from thunderstorms, it’s always important to note that some noises and/or change...s in weather, can cause anxiety in our pets. If you notice that there is a weather advisory or loud event coming up, ensure your pet is safely locked up and monitor for any signs of anxiety. Signs may include, panting, pacing, destructive behaviors, trembling, running away and/or hiding. Speak to your Veterinarian if your pet exhibits any of these signs, as we can help with anti-anxiety measures. As always, we can be reached at 403.901.1800. Have a great evening, and enjoy the show!

Thank you to all our valuable clients for being so considerate and understanding during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we continue with curbside service in Alberta’s phase 2 relaunch strategy you will still see the following in effect: 1. We request that you text us upon arrival to the clinic and we will have someone come out to talk to you about your pet and admit them into the hospital 2. You will see us wearing masks for your protection 3. We use our own leashes for your pups t...hat are sanitized between patients 4. Pet carrier handles and door clasps are sanitized if used for admitting 5. We sanitize our hands thoroughly between each patient, and we sanitize our hospital thoroughly and regularly throughout the day These curbside measures are in place because we cannot effectively social distance with our clients given the volume of patients that we see daily. If we chose to operate open door, we would not be able to accommodate nearly as many animals that require our services and urgent care. Along with the phase 2 transition, and the excellent job that Albertans are doing with public health measures during this pandemic, we will be discontinuing our free delivery services of essential food and medication as of July 1, 2020. Should we feel that there is a need for this service again in future, we will re-instate as necessary to assist our clients during these times. Thank you again to all of you for your support and consideration to our team, we have the best clients and patients, and we love to brag about how awesome you guys really are!
