What is Athletic Therapy? Certified Athletic Therapists are best known for their quick-thinking on-field emergency care of professional and elite athletes. The first to respond when someone gets hurt, they are experts at injury assessment and rehabilitation. It’s that same mix of on-site care and active rehabilitation skills that makes Athletic Therapists so effective in treating the musculoskeletal (muscles, bones, and joints) injuries of all Canadians, whether on the field ...or in the clinic. Athletic therapists adhere to the Sports Medicine Model of care. They treat a wide range of patients, from kids with concussions to seniors recovering from hip replacement surgery, using various manual therapies, modalities, exercise prescription and even bracing and taping. The treatment varies but the objective doesn’t: an Athletic Therapist's goal is to help clients return to their usual activities, whether that means playing competitive sports or walking to the mailbox and back.

What is proprioception? Why is it important ? Proprioception is your body's sense of self. Its your body's ability to know where your limbs are in space. This is especially important in fall prevention because you need to have good body awareness as well as good control of your body to prevent yourself from falling on the slippery ice. This article may be a little dated, but still rings true. ATC's or Athletic Trainers are the USA equivalent of a CAT (C) or a Certified Athletic Therapist. http://www.drdavidgeier.com/athletic-trainers-sports-true-/

Myth #2: Athletic therapy involves a lot exercise. Believe it or not, you're already exercising and you don't even know it. When you go to catch that bus that you're a little bit late for, what do you do? ... you make a clear sprint towards that bus stop.... When you're bagging your groceries into a reusable bag, and hauling it into the back of your vehicle, what do you do? ... you lift those heavy bags with your arms. For all new parents out there with 8, 10, 12 pound newborns that you just cannot let go of and needs your constant love and attention, what are you doing ? ... you cradle that baby until they fall asleep in your arms. The list can go on and go on. It all depends in your definition of exercise and physical activity. For me, depending on your injury and it’s stage of healing, treatment will involve a varied amount of exercise. Ever heard of the term, "use it or lose it?" that applies so heavily on injuries. Exercise promotes healing and improves health when used properly in a rehabilitation program. I will work to make your return to any activity as sport or work or even life specific as I can. Athletic Therapy treatment can also include taping, stretching, strengthening, manual therapy, modalities and more. Whatever your finish line, let me be there to help you cross it. Call (204) 888 8840 for more information.

Athletic Therapy Athletic Therapists (ATs) are skilled in the areas of emergency care, injury assessment and treatment as well as injury prevention. When you co...me into the CPRSMT trailer we will look at your injury discover what the problem is (whether it is a damaged ligament, pulled muscle, or something else) and then we will determine the best course of action. Perhaps you need exercises to strengthen a weak area or increase flexibilIty in a tight area. We have other manual skills as well to help with muscle injuries and ease pain in the area. If the injury includes a damaged ligament we can tape the joint to provide lost stability during the healing process. We will also give you ideas of things you can do on your own over the next few days or weeks to ensure your injury heals well and you can perform at your best in the rodeo arena. We are trained in the skills required for emergency care. That’s why one of the ATs is always watching the action in the arena. We are usually the first ones to an injured cowboy. If the ambulance is required we are very skilled helpers for that crew. We are also the ones bandaging up cuts, and scrapes, if needed. Other skills we have include building braces for specific events to help prevent injury. For instance, maleolus pads (or inner ankle bone) to protect saddle bronc riders’ ankles as well as neck braces for the bareback riders. Sometimes we will build a specific protective device for a cowboy to protect an injured area from further damage. Athletic Therapy is a different profession than Physical Therapy. We have different training, education, as well as different areas of focus and different strengths. Please, don’t call us Physios -BT-

Myth #1: Athletic therapy is only for athletes! Fact #1: Let me be the first to tell you that athletes are not the only people in this world that can get injured. Athletes are also not the only ones that have muscles, bones, and joints. With that being said, you can say that athletic therapists can treat and help out many different kinds of people. Don't let the word "athletic" and "athletes" deter you from seeking help from us.... Athletic therapy can help a wide array and groups of people. Kids, teens, and adults with an injury or concussion, even seniors trying to maintain an active lifestyle or those needing help with balance, and repetitive strain injuries that come with a physical, strenuous and demanding job. If you have an injury to your muscles, bones and joints, athletic therapy might be for you. Call us at (204) 888 8840.
