You may have heard of raster and vector files, but are unsure of what they are. Let's break these terms down! Let's start with raster images! Have you ever zoomed into a photo until you could only see blocks of colour or saw a low-resolution photo that was pixelated? That's because raster images, such as photos and illustrations, consist of pixels. The more pixels within a given space means higher quality images. PPI (pixels per inches) are used to measure image quality. When... raster files are saved, it stores information about the number of pixels in the image. More pixels means larger file sizes. Vector images, on the other hand, can be zoomed in and out without any quality loss, making them scalable. This is because the shapes are created by paths that are mathematically generated. Vector files are typically a lot smaller than high-quality raster images. You may have heard of SVG files (scalable vector graphic) in the past and now you know what it means! That being said, you may be wondering "Why aren't vectors being used for everything? They are scalable and the files are smaller!". Well, it's not that simple - vectors are not supported by all platforms or software, for example Instagram and PowerPoint don't support SVG files. It can also be more difficult to create vector images than photographs. When to use vectors and raster depends on what you want to achieve! There are 7 types of logos as you can see on the image: Abstract Logo: These types of logos don't necessarily tell the audience what the brand is about, but a brand can be built around it! Think of the Pepsi logo for example. Mascot: A mascot logo is a logo with an illustrated character that represents your brand. Some well-known examples are the KFC and Mr. Peanuts.... Pictorial: Pictorial logos are icon-based logos that represent the brand. Think of brands like Twitter and Apple. Lettermark: Lettermarks or otherwise known as monograms are usually brand initials. Common brands that use lettermark logos are IBM and HBO. Wordmark: Wordmarks are font-based logos that use the brands' names. Companies like Coca Cola and Visa use this type of logo. Combination: Combination logos combine different types of logos into one, like Burger King. Emblem: Emblem logos are crest-like logos that represent a brand. One brand that uses an emblem logo is Warner Bros. Leave us a comment on what your favourite type of logo is. While many may believe that print media is outdated, I can assure you that print media is here to stay. When I say "print media", the first thing that comes to your mind is probably newspaper and magazine, right? What if I told you that graphic T-shirt you're wearing and that the packaging of the snack you're currently holding is also print media? It's important for a brand to make sure that its brand is kept consistent and this applies in print too because, at the end of the... day, your print media is your marketing material. You want to make sure that your logo and your colours are consistent all across the border. However, when it comes to print, it can get a little bit tricky. Colours don't print out how you expect them to print. Plus it's important to remember that you can't print white - it's just negative space on print. So if the white space is too small, ink could leak into the negative space, decreasing the visual quality of your print. In order to keep your brand consistent in print, it's important to decide the final format of the job before even starting the design, that way you can work with proper proportions from the beginning. Print media is very much a trial and error thing, so don't give up if it doesn't come out how you expect it to on the first few tries.
