Balmoral Hall School 04.02.2021

Snapshots from the Middle and Junior School classrooms one month into 2021. We count ourselves so fortunate that we can accommodate every student, every day, from childcare to Grade 12. With some well planned moving of resources, students are loving their new spaces. In particular, some of our youngest students are thrilled to be learning in the "big girl" Common Room! We still have spaces available in some grades! If you missed our Open House events last week, give us a call to book a personalized, virtual tour at any time. (204) 784-1608

In celebration of Black History Month, we have started group readings and discussions about different influential Black female icons. This week, in Grade 2, girls broke into groups and deciphered the main idea from books about Ruby Bridges, Rosa Parks, Viola Desmond, Harriet Tubman, and Josephine Baker. In the coming weeks, this class will rotate these books so each group will have a chance to study these important historical figures. ... They also read and discussed Aretha Franklin as a class and listened to her most famous anthem, "Respect." They spoke about the importance of music in cultural movements and the impact that Aretha Franklin had during the Civil Rights Movement. #blackhistorymonth

What is the value of a Balmoral Hall education? That was something that Katie's family had to consider. However, like one in four students at BH, both she and her sister received tuition support. That little bit of help allowed them to access the opportunities that an all-girls education has to offer. But we'll let Katie tell you that herself. If you missed last week's Open House events, you can request a personalized tour on our website anytime. www.balmoralhall.com/open-house

We’re back! Balmoral Hall has now made it through one term of learning in the new normal and, with the exception of the first two weeks, we’ve been fortunate to have all our students back in class, from BH Beginnings all the way up to Grade 12. As we release this episode, everyone is beginning 2021 with the same optimism, determination, and love of learning that’s brought us through one of the most challenging years on record. This month, we check in with Senior School prin...cipal Jodi Hafenbrak, about what to expect for the rest of the school year. Then, we check in with Grade 1 teachers Christine Kerr and Laila Schwartz about the adaptability of Grade 1 students (and about their many different classrooms this year!) Finally, we head back to memory lane with Kati Tabin ‘15, who tells us about her time at BH, her experience with Team Canada and beyond. Speaking of alumnae, we also recap the two special virtual events over the holidays that brought our BH girls back together for some epic trivia battles. It was hard to imagine, when we got back to school in September, that we’d be in the studio this month, talking about our favourite Halloween costumes - or that our current safety status would be jack o’ lantern orange! Thanks to an incredible effort by our entire school community, from teachers, to admin staff, to our dedicated leadership, all our students are still in class and thinking about this year’s Halloween Mufti day. We’ve got a jam-packed episode for you this week!... Bryan and John welcome Cole Paterson and some of his Grade 4 students to talk about coding, TUSC (totally unbelievable speaking club), and their adventures in philosophy! (Yes philosophy!) This time around, we’re hitting another milestone! For the first time in our podcast’s history, we’ve got a four-person, in-studio interview! Music teacher Mrs. Robbie Bedford Beesley, and dance teacher Ms Christina Kapac sat down with John and Bryan for a great discussion about how we’re managing to keep the music and dance happening at BH this year. (Check the school Instagram feed for photos!) We also get a visit from Director of Philanthropy, Geneviève Delaquis who talks to us about the launch of this year’s Annual Fund, and some of the many ways in which donations have enriched the BH experience. Last but not least, Staff Trivia is back, and we may finally start to see a scoring change in Roast the Host.
