*DRUG ALERT* Public Health received reports from a community partner today that a substance being sold as cocaine tested positive for the presence of fentanyl u...sing fentanyl test strips in the Cape Breton area. With the possibility of substance contamination, it’s important to reduce the risk of overdose: -- Don’t use alone, if possible. Keep a distance of 2 meters and respect public health measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19 if using substances with others. If you have to use alone, call a trusted support person and let them know you are using alone and provide them with your location. -- Start with a test dose. Start low, go slow. -- Have naloxone available, even if you aren’t intentionally using opioids. Naloxone is available for free from most community pharmacies and other community locations, including needle distribution and disposal organizations. For more information about where to get a free naloxone kit and how to use it, visit http://www.nsnaloxone.com/ -- Call 911 in the event of an overdose. Know your rights under the Good Samaritan Act.

SYDNEY The Ally Centre of Cape Breton's free fentanyl testing strips are detecting a troubling trend in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. Over the past w...eek, a number of clients brought to the centre's attention a large number of cocaine samples that they checked with the test strips indicating a positive result for fentanyl an extremely strong opioid, which is highly addictive and potentially fatal when mixed with other substances. "It is trace amounts but it is there," said Giulia DiGiorgio, the program co-ordinator of the sharp advice needle exchange at the Ally Centre. "The scary thing is for someone who is not used to opioids, it only takes the smallest amount (to cause dependency or overdose)." DiGiorgio said they believe a "good portion" of the cocaine supply in North Sydney has fentanyl in it. "And when it was brought to the attention of the dealer they were completely unaware," she said. "They said that's how they got it from up the line." The Ally Centre started a campaign encouraging testing in North Sydney after being alerted to fentanyl detected in cocaine purchased in New Waterford and Glace Bay. "I believe it is trickling into all of the illicit drug supply because it's used as a filler. And like any other opioid it makes you physically dependant. Cocaine you don't become more physically dependant, it's psychological. With opioids, you do. You physically get sick when you're withdrawing from them," explained DiGiorgio. "Now, that's happening to someone who is using cocaine that has fentanyl in it, even trace amounts will do that, make them physically dependant. They put it in for greed. To get you hooked on cocaine more than you would anyway." HARM REDUCTION TIPS Fentanyl in other substances can cause drug overdose which can result in the person's respiratory system stopping. Naloxone can reverse the effect and save someone's life. Naloxone kits are free in Nova Scotia and are available at all pharmacies or the Ally Centre where training is also provided at no cost. For people who use drugs, the Ally Centre suggests: Don't use alone Start with a small amount Test before use if possible Carry a Naloxone kit Call 911 if you see an overdose The Good Samaritan Overdose Act is in place in Canada and it protects people from criminal charges related to drug use or some breaches of release orders when they report an overdose to 911. Fentanyl testing strips are available for free at the Ally Centre in Sydney and simple to use. There are no questions asked when someone requests them, just like their safe needle supply kits.
