BC Wildlife Park 12.12.2020

The update that we were hoping to not have to give you: Unfortunately, for the first time in 22 years we have to cancel Wildlights. Our teams worked (and are still working!), incredibly hard to have over 800,000 lights set up, just in case restrictions were lifted and we were granted permission to move forward. On Monday December 7th, it was announced that the restrictions would carry over into the New Year, and with that, comes the cancelation of Wildlights 2020.... We briefly considered a drive-through event; however, the well-being of the wildlife in our care remains our first priority. With the pathways and their close proximity to our wildlife, a drive-through event would be disruptive to many of the animals. To everyone who purchased tickets in advance, thank you for your support! 2 dates were already completely sold out, with many more nearly sold out. Refunds will be automatically processed through Eventbrite, and you should see your refund within the next few days. To those who have asked us to not refund your tickets as you wish to donate the proceeds to the Park, we thank you for your generosity! All tickets will be automatically be refunded; however, if you wish to support us, please visit https://www.bcwildlife.org/support-us.htm for a list of ways you can support the BC Wildlife Park during this difficult time. So, as we all have done throughout 2020, we pivot. We’re working with Aspect Film Works to bring a virtual Wildlights experience for you to enjoy at home, with your family. We know it isn’t the same as viewing the lights in person, but, this is a fantastic way for you to still support the BC Wildlife Park throughout this holiday season, and take in all the beautiful lights and animal encounters with your family. Stay tuned, as details on how you can support us virtually, will be coming soon. Another option we’ve considered is Wildlights Take II in January or February. Please let us know in the comments below if you would be interested in attending Wildlights in the New Year, should the restrictions ease by then. This would greatly assist us in our decision making process! Wildlights has been a staple tradition within the Kamloops community, and we will miss seeing everyone this holiday season.

All the added lights, decoration, gadgets and pure gastric over indulgence over the Christmas season are a joy to us but can become hazards to our furry companions. Here are some tips on how to keep your pets safe over the coming holidays. Extra strands of lights are a festive touch, but all of the extra electrical cables can become a dangerous maze. Make sure your pets are not able to get near enough to chew them this is a particular problem to watch for with kittens an...d puppies. Avoid feeding pets toxic foods. We have all heard about the toxic effects of chocolate but many other every day foods are toxic such as onions, garlic, nuts, sugar, raisins and alcohol. Another lesser known item to watch for is the sweetener xylitol. It is extremely toxic to dogs and even small amounts can have very severe side effects and can even cause death. Many traditional Christmas plants such as Holly, Mistletoe, Poinsettias and Lilies can cause gastric upsets in dog and cats. The most toxic is the Lily with both the leaves and the flowers being deadly poisonous when ingested by cats. Make sure your tree is securely in place and do not use any additives or chemicals to the Christmas tree water as pets often find this water a good place to find a drink. Attach the decorations securely to the branches. It may be a good idea to stay away from glass ornaments as shattered glass can be a hazard to curious critters. Avoid using tinsel or any spray-on chemical snow products, if ingested by pets it can cause an intestinal blockage. With a little thoughtful consideration of our four legged companions we can all have a fun and safe holiday. Looking for a fun, pet friendly, craft to make? The lynx that the Bc Conservation Officer Service brought to the BC Wildlife Park at the end of October has now been released by the BCCOS, in an undisclosed location more appropriate for his species. . While in our care the lynx was treated for an infection and received antibiotics and pain medication. Additionally, a 4cm long twig was found lodged in his upper eye socket, and was removed. . We greatly appreciate the support with the BCCOS, and we wish the lynx a long, healthy life in the wild!
