In a moment of pervasive uncertainty, curatorial work is undergoing profound transformations, faced with new tasks in shifting social and political conditions. What can curatorial work do when institutional parameters and protocols have been altered by social distancing, travel restrictions, and political dissent? How might the situation present an opportunity to rethink and decolonize the field of contemporary art curation? Hosted by the Critical and Curatorial Studies program at UBC, this panel will feature four curators Bopha Chhay (Artspeak gallery), Vanessa Kwan (grunt gallery), Pablo do Ocampo (Western Front), and cheyanne turions (SFU Galleries).
In honour of Remembrance Day, the Belkin will be closed on Wednesday, November 11 Jack Shadbolt, Little Mountain Camp, 1942.
Congratulations, Mann Art Gallery! Artist Cheryl L'Hirondelle's work is also included in the Belkin's Soundings exhibition.

We’re excited to hear Dylan Robinson, co-curator of the Soundings exhibition, this Monday ...... Reposted from @curatorsintl Next Monday, September 14, join us for an online conversation with Aruna D'Souza and Dylan Robinson, author of Hungry Listening: Resonant Theory for Indigenous Sound Studies and Co-Curator of ICI’s Traveling Exhibition, Soundings: An Exhibition in Five Parts. This previously recorded conversation on Robinson’s new book, Hungry Listening, wi...ll be followed by a live Q&A. Hungry Listening is the first book to consider listening from both Indigenous and settler colonial perspectives, and a critical response to what has been called the whiteness of sound studies. In addition to examples of how decolonial practices of listening emerge from an increased awareness of listening positionality, Hungry Listening includes a series of event scores, dialogic improvisations, and forms of poetic response and refusal that demand a reorientation toward the act of reading as a way of listening. This event is co-presented with Belkin Art Gallery, for more information and to RSVP for this event, click the link in our instagram bio, or visit our website: https://curatorsintl.org//hungry-listening-a-conversation- #Curatorsintl #ICIExhibitions @dylan.w.robinson @invisible.flaneuse @belkinartgallery See more

The Belkin is thrilled to be working with curator Candice Hopkins for our Soundings exhibition, opening September 8, check out this conversation from August 19... @curatorsintl Watch Now: On Indigeneity, Curatorial Methodologies, and Sound Available now in our Media Room! On August 19, ICI hosted a conversation between Candice Hopkins, writer, researcher, and a citizen of Carcross/Tagish First Nation and Co-Curator of ICI's Soundings, and Pablo José Ra...mírez, editor in chief of Infrasonica and Adjunct Curator of First Nations and Indigenous Art at Tate Modern. The conversation investigated notions of sound and Indigenous art, looking critically at the hierarchies regularly established between the sonic and the visual realm. This program was co-presented with Infrasonica, a is a digital platform of non-Western cultures, which includes archives of experimental sound and visual artists, as well as theoretical musing on contemporary critical thought. Listen to Lucy Strauss conjure both familiar and unconventional sounds from the viola in response to a beaded score created by Anishinaabe artist Olivia Whetung... as part of Sonic Responses Standing on the crest of the grassy knoll in front of the AMS Student Nest at the University of British Columbia, Lucy Strauss conjures both familiar and unconventional sounds from the viola in response to a beaded score created by Anishinaabe artist Olivia Whetung. As one of the contributing artists in Soundings, Whetung has created Strata, a series of beaded works, one produced from each of the territories the exhibition has travelled. A cumulative work, each individual score is composed by threading different coloured beads from a mason jar in the order they are collected. The jar is filled through the participation of gallery visitors during the opening weeks of the exhibition. Sonic Responses invites eight musicians and one composer to respond to the changed aural conditions of UBC’s outdoor spaces and furthers the collaborations between the Belkin Art Gallery and the UBC School of Music that will continue through the presentation of Soundings: An Exhibition in Five Parts at the Belkin through Fall 2020.
