Mother’s Day is more than just another holiday to us, it’s an integral part of our story. In 1951, the land we’ve built our community on was nothing but bare, scrubland that nobody wanted’. Thankfully, one group of seniors saw more than scrubland, they imagined a future. And so, on Mother’s Day, they took to the streets with thousands of carnations to sell. People all throughout Vancouver bought the flowers for their mothers, raising enough funds in a single day to purchase... the land. Since 1951 our carnation bought land has become home to thousands of seniors, and thousands of mothers, who have made our lives and the community of East Vancouver so much richer. All because seniors saw what others didn’t. So, like you on this Mother’s Day, we stand on the shoulders of some Godly, compassionate, hardworking women who went out and made life happen. We are forever thankful for the faith and strength which mothers freely give. Happy Mother’s Day!
