Welcome to our first writer biography: Olaudah Equiano (1745-1797). Equiona was an activist and writer born in the Eboe region of the Kingdom of Benin (now southern Nigeria). Equiano was enslaved until 1766 when he purchased his freedom. From then, he joined the abolitionist movement and wrote multiple influential works including his autobiography, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, which gave insight into the horrors of slavery.
