8 months ago I met with a very talented junior golfer Raesa Sheikh who was a member of Team Ontario, an accomplished junior in her own right and for various reasons was struggling in reaching her full potential. Battling a wrist injury and not sure what the future would hold, I laid out a plan for Raesa that would involve 1) Rebuilding elements of her swing, 2) detailed short game training - so it could become her safety net in competition 3) A major focus on Preparation 4)... Guidance on how to practice 5) trusting yourself, your ability and letting go. It’s been an incredible journey the past 8 months. We cancelled our March Break trip, A global Pandemic, online lessons and more... during it all, I’m proud to say that Raesa has been growing and embracing the process laid out so that she can reach her full potential. In June , Raesa broke par for the first time in competition with an opening round -2 finishing in 6th place at the Alberta Junior Girls Championship. At the Ontario Women’s Amateur, Raesa played 4 solid rounds in the 70’s showing that her game was continuing to trend in the right direction. This past week at the Ontario Junior Girls Championship with scores of 73/73/73/70 Raesa finished in a tie for third place! Her final round -2 (70) was spectacular after making double bogies on holes 1 and 3, Raesa showed true fight and mental strength to bounce back and make a personal best 8 birdies on the day!! #ProudCoach Thanks to all her past coaches for their positive influence and providing me with a solid foundation to work with. Golf is a funny game and we don’t know what tomorrow will bring. I will continue to work with Raesa on the plan and with out a doubt take it one shot at a time! I always like to work with my students on making everything they do be around the concept of playing free and trusting your instinct. Sounds easy but many (including myself at times ) get far to caught up on technique or allowing doubt to creep in as we place so much pressure on ourselves to hit the perfect shot... instead of just trusting your training and letting go!
