Liam Peyton, winger with Halifax Mooseheads and Hockey Gives Blood player ambassador, shares the impact the Humboldt Broncos crash left on him. I knew a couple of the players that were involved in the Humboldt Broncos crash who I played [hockey] with when I was younger, so it really hit home for me when this tragedy happened how important it was to donate. It could have been any junior hockey team or anybody really, says Liam. Join Liam in registering your intent to do...nate organs and tissues and share your decision with your family. Thank you Narcity Canada for the feature! All new vaccines are assessed by the medical professionals at Canadian Blood Services and Héma-Québec, in conjunction with recommendations by Health Canada, and informed by scientific evidence. Health Canada has indicated that no blood donor deferral is required for any of the currently authorized COVID-19 vaccines. This is consistent with Canadian Blood Services’ donor eligibility criteria for other non-live vaccines, for which no ...donor deferral is required, and is in line with the practice of other blood operators. Blood collected from donors who have received any of the current Health Canada-authorized COVID-19 vaccines has not been associated with any adverse transfusion reaction that has been attributable to vaccination of the donor. Thank you for being part of #CanadasLifeline.

Dujon Donaldson, a quality assurance manager in Brampton and an avid soccer player, understands the importance of rallying a group of colleagues around a common goal. You have to have a team spirit in soccer, he says, and I try to bring that to work as well. If I’m not committed or passionate about my job, how can I expect the same from the team I lead? Since joining Canadian Blood Services in 2012 as a medical laboratory technologist, Dujon has seen a lot of changes i...n the organization. One that stands out for him is our strengthened commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. This February, in honour of Black History Month, we are celebrating the rich history and accomplishments of Black Canadians and exploring the experiences and contributions of Black employees, donors and patients to Canada’s Lifeline. It gives me great pleasure to help others, says Hedy Halpern, the daughter of Holocaust survivors. A volunteer all of her life, Hedy helped Vietnamese refugees settle in and around Montreal in the 1970s. With 182 donations of whole blood, plasma and platelets to date Hedy is a faithful volunteer at recruitment events. A retired nurse, she also trains and me...ntors new volunteers. I’m a talker, so it’s hard for people to ignore me, she says with a laugh. Hedy believes that giving back to the community is essential. It’s part of life, she says. Are you on the stem cell registry? Let us know you’re truly prepared to donate. Many potential donors decline to proceed with lifesaving donation when asked.... Currently, when potential donors on the registry are contacted to donate stem cells for a patient, only about 50 per cent of them follow through, says Dr. Heidi Elmoazzen, director of stem cells at Canadian Blood Services. ... We’re especially interested in male donors between the ages of 17 and 35, because cells from those donors tend to result in better outcomes for patients, says Dr. Elmoazzen. Also, because of Canada’s changing demographics, we need donors from all ancestral backgrounds to provide matches for patients. Being able to reach a potential donor is essential to the timeliness of the donation process for a patient in critical need of a stem cell transplant You can update your contact information anytime by calling 1 888 236 6283 (1 888 2 DONATE). When Corporal Laura Matern joined the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in 1986, donating blood quickly became just another regular part of her military life. For many years, while living and working in Calgary, Alta., Cpl. Matern diligently made appointments to donate blood as often as she could. On Monday November 9th, an amazing thing happened. Our blood drive in #Midland turned into #MilestoneMonday! With 118 donors attending, we discovered 9 of them were making milestone donations. These dedicated donors are responsible for a combined 585 units of blood over the years! Swipe ... Here’s a fun fact about each of them: Kimberly - following in her mom's footsteps, who is no longer eligible, so she's carrying the torch now! Carolyn - a co-worker first brought her to a clinic and she’s so glad Mike made me do it! Doug - donated for years with the Red Cross then got away from it, but came back when his son became a nurse. Brian - has actually donated way more than 25 times, but overseas, when he was a teacher in South Korea for 20 years. Richard - routinely gave together with his wife over the years, as a special thing they would do together. John - inspired by his mother, who donated over 100 times herself! Grace - started donating when she was a nursing student in Toronto. Leonard - donated the first time with some buddies in high school & throughout his career as an OPP officer. Andrew - it was a co-worker who first brought him to a clinic, and over the years, they would often be able to donate over their lunch break and make it back to work in time. He now encourages co-workers in the same way. Milestones like this don’t come along every day so we were so happy to capture these special occasions. Donation 32 today! Today's donation is for a dear colleague whose father, husband, and a friend are all battling cancer. You think you've had a crappy 2020? Think again when you have your health and home. Many people with cancer require blood or platelet transfusions, and the need for blood does NOT stop during COVID or Christmas. Do something to serve someone else this week, whether friend, family, client or stranger. Send a food delivery, drop off a favorite drink, mail ...a card, email an e-book, order a magazine subscription, pray, give to the food bank, call a friend, clear a sidewalk, say thank you, leave a 30% tip, bake treats, message me about giving blood. Service is simple, don't wait for the perfect time - there are no perfect servants, just start. #repost @lakeviewaquaticconsultnts #thankyou #blooddonor #canadabloodservices #blooddonation #canadaslifeline #calgary #yyc #blood #donor #lakeviewaquaticconsultnts

As a child, N’kem Odita moved around the Greater Toronto Area with her mom, living in many multicultural communities. She learned very early in life that diversity was a strength. Now, as an adult working in Canada’s health sector, N’kem sees how diversity specifically, stem cells from diverse donors can save lives. The more genetically diverse someone’s background is, the more difficult it can be to find a matching stem cell donor for a transplant. Only 32 percent of p...otential donors on Canadian Blood Services Stem Cell Registry currently represent diverse groups. That’s why in 2019, when N’kem and her Trinidadian husband found out she was pregnant with their son Marcus, they wanted to pay it forward by donating their baby’s umbilical cord blood, hoping that it would help a patient in need. Canadian military history and blood donation. Members of the Canadian Armed Forces and the Department of National Defence (DND) have had a long history with blood donation in Canada. During the final year of the Second World War, Canadians donated close to a million units of blood for use in military hospitals. This generous response gave birth to Canada’s voluntary blood system. In 2006, the Department of National Defence became Canadian Blood Services’ first national Partne...r for Life organization. Since then, members of the Canadian Armed Forces and DND have made thousands of blood donations and inspired many Canadians to become regular blood donors. The kind of support we get from the Canadian Armed Forces is simply amazing. They provide members with ample opportunity to donate blood by hosting regular donation drives right on the base, says Greg. Those who live in smaller communities without a local on-base donor clinic are encouraged to donate at nearby donor centres, so everyone gets the opportunity. Read more: https://www.blood.ca//blood-war-zones-canadas-contribution ______________________________ This fall, to commemorate Remembrance Day on Nov. 11, we encourage all those who can to honour members of the Canadian Armed Forces, past and present, by booking an appointment to donate blood or making a financial donation to Canadian Blood Services. It was as if someone had taken a teaspoon of sand, dumped it in my eye, taken their thumb and ground it in, and every once in a while, gave it a little poke with a twig. That’s how Loreen Hardy-Ramey describes living with Fuchs endothelial dystrophy, a hereditary eye condition. Without the cornea transplant the Arnprior, Ont. woman received in the summer of 2016, Hardy-Ramey’s pain would have continued as her sight faded. I say it was my eightieth birthday present because ...I received this gift just days after my birthday, she says. Now she’s looking forward to the birth of her great-grandchild, who she’ll be able to see with both eyes. Read the report on eye and tissue banking in Canada: http://ow.ly/YfNh50BNGwp #WorldSightDay

In October of 2015 my Dad lost his battle with cancer. This event shaped my career and deepened my understanding of the value of good financial advice, importance of life insurance, the impact of a smile, and making sure you leave no cards on the table with your loved ones, but more than anything else the importance of giving was bestowed upon me. During 2015 my Dad had a number of blood transfusions and I can tell you as someone who sat by his side how truly thankful I am t...o those who give! Today I gave back. This did not take a lot of my time, this did not hurt or cost me anything. I know there is someone out there sitting beside a loved one who is fighting a battle and for that I will continue to give. #formydad Did you know that the Canadian Blood Services recorded a significant drop in blood donations since the start of the pandemic? Thanks to @lifelineott we were able to donate blood safely while adhering to COVID-19 safety precautions.
