Hi everyone! Our next online meeting is scheduled for Sunday, February 21 at 1:00 pm EST. If you're not already a CAPS member but want to attend, please make sure to join CAPS as soon as possible. Exactly one week before the meeting, CAPS members will receive an email invitation to join along with details of the presentation and a link to the auction listing.... There are already some choice submissions for February's auction including 78 rpm recordings by Blind Lemon Jefferson, King Oliver and His Dixie Syncopators, Bessie Smith and Leadbelly. Don't miss out on these extraordinary finds! If you are a CAPS member and have items you would like to be auctioned at the upcoming meeting, please check your email for our recent message. Complete all sections of the attached CAPS Online Auction Item Submission Form and send one copy of the form for each item, along with one or more high resolution photographs, to Bill Pratt - [email protected]. Thanks!

The first trademark used by the Gramophone Co. prior to Emile Berliner purchasing the painting of Nipper was the Recording Angel trademark designed by Theodore Birnbaum, managing director of the Berlin branch of the Gramophone Co. in 1898 and was accepted for the entire company in June of that year. It was in use by January 1899 by the London Gramophone Co. and continued until 1909. The Recording Angel was used by the early Victor machines and the Berliner Gram-o-phone Co. of... Montreal, to be found on the bottom of the case (shown attached). It measures 8 cm. wide by 8.5 cm. in height. Emile Berliner acquired the painting of Nipper in 1899 at the London office of the Gramophone Co and upon his return to Washington, began using the His Master's Voice trademark as of May 1900. The Gramophone Co in England continued using the Recording Angel until about 1909 and some countries that were offended by a dog continued using the Angel even longer. If you would like a high resolution copy of the Recording Angel, please provide me with your email address and I will forward to you. Blain McCutchen See more

A group of us at CAPS are collecting data on the Berliner Model B & C's for an article to be presented in the CAPS newsletter. If anybody has one of these models, would you please help us and fill out a question sheet that I will send. Thanks. Blain McCutchen

In 1923, the Berliner Gram-o-phone Co. Ltd. of Montreal released a 3 book set with one 10 in. record per book. Each record had about 16 nursery rhymes on His Master's Voice label with accompanying illustrations in a book. Although a Canadian recording with American artists, the pronunciation is definitely British. Interesting in that with all the popularity of listening to records at home, Berliner decided to release a set of 3 records especially for children. That was nice.
