Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame 2021 Ballot Announced The Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame is pleased to announce its 2021 ballot. Due to Covid-19 restrictions resulting in the Hall not yet fully honouring the Class of 2020, the Board of Directors determined it best to reduce the number of inductees for the Class of 2021 to three per breed. This will allow for the 2020 and 2021 inductees to be properly recognized together, once public health guidelines permit. The Board ...also decided additional inductees will be added in 2022 and 2023 to compensate for the smaller class of 2021. A total of 18 people and horses comprised of nine Standardbred and nine Thoroughbred candidates have been selected to appear on the voting ballot. A 20-person Election Committee for each breed will determine the one individual to be inducted in each category, with the results to be announced on Tuesday, April 13th. Biographies for each of the finalists can be found here: https://www.canadianhorseracinghalloffame.com/2021//29/8203 The three categories selected by the Standardbred Nominating Committee to appear on the CHRHF 2021 Standardbred ballots are: Builder, Driver and Female Horse. Categories and finalist names in each are presented below in alphabetical order. In the Standardbred Builder category, the candidates are Jim Bullock, Al Libfeld, and Dr. Lloyd McKibbin. The 2021 Standardbred Driver ballot features Mary Clare Clare MacDonald, Ed Tracey and Randy Waples. The Standardbred Female Horse category features Great Memories, Pure Ivory and West Of LA. The three categories selected by the Thoroughbred Nominating Committee for the 2021 Thoroughbred ballot are Builder, Male Horse, and Veteran Horse. (Categories and finalist names in each are presented below in alphabetical order.) A Thoroughbred Builder ballot comprised of Charles E. Fipke, Sam Lima, and Vicki Pappas, is offered for voter consideration. The 2021 Thoroughbred Male Horse ballot includes Fatal Bullet, Heart to Heart and Joshua Tree. November 16, 1990, exactly 30 years ago today the great Northern Dancer was humanely euthanized after suffering a bout of colic. Following his passing in Maryland, his body was returned to Windfields Farm in Oshawa where he was buried. His death was the lead story in newscasts and headlines in newspapers throughout North America as racing fans around the world mourned the loss of Canada's most famous Thoroughbred racehorse. His legacy and contribution continue, as so many of today's Thoroughbred pedigrees carry even just a little bit of Northern Dancer's bloodline. https://www.canadianhorseracinghalloffame.com//northern-d/

The 2020 Breeders’ Cup is in the history books as part of the strangest racing season ever. The fans / owners / breeders / nominators / trainers / jockeys / exercise riders / horsemen / horsewomen / veterinarians and the BC / Keeneland staff, did their best to make the event the best they could, keeping their love and enthusiasm for the sport of horse racing and for the Breeders’ Cup - is what made the event so special. After the races Spendthrift owner B. Wayne Hughes dug... deep into his pockets as the hammer at Keeneland's Fasig-Tipton November mixed sale came downvery gentlyfor $9.5 million on dual Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Monomoy Girl (2020, 2018). The stratospheric purchase price for Monomoy Girl was a signal that the new connections intended to keep the five-year-old daughter of Tapizar in training and on the track in 2021 as a six-year-old. Currently 13-2-0, she is relatively lightly raced, having run four times this season and missing all of 2019 due to minor injury and a case of colic. Almost immediately, Ned Toffey, Spendthrift general manager confirmed she would remain in the care of trainer Brad Cox with the intention of continuing a racing career that has earned her $4,426,818. It was later announced the 2020 Breeders' Cup Classic and Kentucky Derby winner Authentic would be retired from racing to stand at Spendthrift for $75,000. He will join the stallion corps there alongside his sire, Into Mischief, who stands for $225,000 in the coming season, the highest price among North American stallions $12.4 million dollar man, World Champion and Eclipse Award-winning three-year-old Maximum Security has been retired from racing and is now available for inspection at Ashford Stud where he will stand for 2021. Ashford Stud is also home to, among other stallions, the Triple Crown winners American Pharoah and Justify. Saturday may add another Canadian Triple Crown winner to the history books since Wando in 2003. It is fitting that Wando’s trainer, Mike Keough, is one of the inductees to the CHRHF this year. Great retrospective by Jennifer Morrison in Canadian Thoroughbred Twelve horses have won the Canadian Triple Crown. The past 7 winners of the series had been regularly noted as the Triple Crown winners since the series was officially called a series in 1959.... However, in 2014, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, David Onley, announced at Queen’s Park that Woodbine Entertainment Group, in conjunction with the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, were grandfathering in five winners of the Triple Crown of Canadian Thoroughbred racing before the 1959 official Crown status. Queensway (1932), Archworth (1939), Uttermost (1945), Ace Marine (1955) and Canadian Champ (1956) joined the seven Triple Crown winners of the modern era. https://canadianthoroughbred.com//twelve-canadian-triple-/ Photo of Archworth, Triple Crown winner in 1939
