#meetusmonday Calvin Shao Registered Massage Therapist... Calvin Shao is a recent RMT graduate, who previously worked in active rehabilitation as a kinesiologist. After graduating with an undergrad from UBC, Calvin entered the work force of Kinesiology, only to have an epiphany that he had lacked the manual skills training to make his approach holistic. Calvin is just like you, or any other individual. He has experienced some traumatic injuries, including an ACL, ALL, Meniscus tear, as well as a SLAP lesion on his right shoulder. Through his own experiences, Calvin looks to guide patients back to a healthier, pain-free life. When Calvin is not at work, you can catch him at the gym, on the basketball courts, or running around picking up after his fur family of 2 rabbits, and 1 dog.

#meetusmonday Dr. Michael Bastien Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine ... Dr. Michael Bastien received his undergraduate degree in Kinesiology, specializing in rehabilitation and health, from Simon Fraser University. He then completed his Naturopathic medical training from the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine. From 2010 to 2019, he taught at Boucher as an instructor in the physical medicine department, spreading his passion for the profession. At an early age Dr. Bastien was introduced to a wide variety of alternative medicine. This early introduction led to a desire to help people, which eventually took him down the path of naturopathic medicine. His practice focuses on acute and chronic pain while staying grounded in the core principles of health including digestive support and hormone regulation. When Dr. Bastien isn't in the office or taking continuing education, you can find with his family and looking tough while he takes his new Pomeranian puppy, Boss out for a walk. Even though this puppy is weighing in at a whopping 3 lbs, his name suits him well and he definitely shows Dr. Bastien who the boss of the house is.

Having someone who understands the way the body reacts through training stress allows you to create a program in which you will feel safe, challenged and with limited set backs. A lot of fitness type goals fail because of lack of understanding of how to create a plan for you and what your body needs to meet its' goals. Whether it is something as scientifically specific as Triphasic based training or working through linear and undulating periodization. Having someone who knows how to guide you through different phases of your workouts will generate productive, quicker results. Are you hot or cold? Home care is an important part of rehabilitation and pain management. One of the most common forms of home care is hot and cold therapy. Heat therapy increases blood flow to the area to help with healing and may soothe pain or muscle ache. Cold therapy decreases blood flow to the area and may decrease swelling and decrease nerve conduction decreasing pain. Ask your doctor or manual therapist about specific applications for your pain needs. #hydrotherapy #hotandcold #homecare

Mid-back pain is a common complaint and can be associated with a number of factors including stress, repetitive work, trauma and/or sustained postures. Pain in this region is often thought to involve the muscles that run from the spine to the medial scapular border (trapezius, rhomboids, teres) and underlying rib articulations. Like many other types of physical pain, a combination of mobilization, stretching and resistance training can be very helpful for combating this problem. If you suffer from symptoms in this region, book in with our team today! www.catalystkinetics.com/book-now/

Dark days got you down? Human beings generate vitamin D through a process that involves direct sun exposure to skin, followed by bio-activation in the liver and kidneys. To name a few of its responsibilities, this power-house micronutrient has a direct influence on insulin sensitivity and action, bone mineralization, immune modulation, and neurological health (your mood!). While vitamin D is found in fatty fish, fortified foods, and egg yolks, it is tough to obtain adequate amounts through food - enter supplementation! This molecule is fat soluble, which means 3 things: 1) it is best absorbed with a fatty carrier 2) it can become toxic at long-term high doses 3) there is NO blanket dose. If you are aiming for optimal and safe dosing, GET TESTED! Talk to one of our NDs to help beat the Winter blues with vitamin D.
