James McGran, an MA student in the School of Child and Youth Care at the University of Victoria, is currently recruiting participants for research that will investigate frontline early childhood educators’ experiences with pedagogical narrations. Dear Early Childhood Educators and Child Care Providers in BC, Vancouver Island University is in the process of developing an Online Degree in Early Childhood Education and Care with a focus on Leadership/Administration and Outdoor/Land-Based Learning. This is the second survey that is being circulated by VIU to educators throughout BC. The purpose of this survey is to gather more specific input on the types of courses and electives you might be interested in taking. If you ...completed the first survey, you’ll notice that a few questions at the beginning are similar; however, they are followed by more specific questions about special topics and interests. While these topics/interests are divided into three categories, it is recognized that there are many interconnections between them. Online parent support circles are available for those who are looking for some support with the day to day struggles of raising a family in BC.

With summer vacations in full swing, public pools are being re-opened, and lakes are being visited. The Canadian Pediatric Society (CPS) has advised that can children can drown in very little water (even less than 5cm), and that drowning is the second most common cause of death for children under 5 years of age in Canada. They further advise that the majority of annual child drownings take place in the summer so checking out water safety reminders is a good practice for families with young children. The below links are from the CPS and Parachute, Canada's national charity dedicated to injury prevention.

We are pleased to share with you that the Ministry of Education has completed and launched their new Online Course - Introducing the Early Learning Framework. They designed this course for educators, families, and anyone who works or spends time with children from birth to age eight. It reflects the key concepts of the B.C. Early Learning Framework (2019) with examples of what this looks like in practice. Completion of the course will provide up to 8 hours of professional learning credits for early childhood educators. CCRR is working hard to get in person First Aid courses to you in a safe manner ASAP. We are anticipating opening up classes this summer and will be working through our wait list before we start advertising open classes. Have you heard? The Temporary Emergency Funding is extended until August 31st. This ensures child care operators can transition smoothly during the summer and will be ready when schools open for in-class instruction in September. During this time, most child care operators will be able to open, or if currently open, work towards full capacity.... There will likely be a TEF surplus for many operators as they reach full operating capacity. To support and acknowledge the ongoing hard work of our Early Childhood Educators (ECEs), operators are required to use any surplus TEF during the months of July and August as a temporary wage enhancement or other non-monetary compensation, such as training towards ECE re-certification, for ECEs. The Childcare BC Temporary Inclusion Support Fund has been established to help child care providers create an inclusive space for Essential Service Workers children who require extra support. Anti-racism resources for children are an important complement to any early childhood collection.

WorkBC foundational training stream offers grants to cover 100% of the cost of ECE courses and 60% of the cost of ITE / SNE courses for employees. Online training programs (such as Pacific Rim Early Childhood Institute, which offer course work to start the 1st of every month) are well suited to this funding program. Employers submit a grant request for each individual course you would like to have covered during the grant time period, to a maximum of $10,000.00 per employee. Employer will have to pay up front, and then when the course is completed, they get reimbursed - however, this is more reliable than the ECEBC bursary, as employees do not register for a course before knowing it is fully financially covered. ECE Bursary Update: Summer 2020 Education Support Fund (Bursary) The Early Childhood Educators of BC and the Government of British Columbia are delighted to announce an intake will open for the Summer 2020 bursary award, with limited funding available... COMPLETED applications will be accepted from June 1st to June 12th, 2020, and processed on a first come, first serve basis. Applications will not be accepted before or after these dates and must be sent to [email protected]. Unlike previous semesters, there will NOT be a wait list created Approved applicants will be informed on July 3rd, 2020 before 4pm. Transcripts for completed courses are required by September 15th, 2020 at 4pm and must be sent to [email protected].
