STOP! ...Before you enter into that confined space do you already consider the following? 1) Entry and Exit Plan ... How are you going to get in and out safely? 2) The Atmosphere Do not enter until testing for chemicals, gases and other hazards has been professionally assessed! The environment where workers will be entering needs to be monitored continuously. 3) Lighting Confined space workers need approved light sources to avoid risks of slips, trips, falls, and other accidents. 4) Equipment Function Damaged equipment cannot be used, every thing needs to be inspected and deemed safe before use. Equipment needs to be taken care of correctly and stored properly. 5) The Confined Space Conditions Examine the properties of the space - what's the height? Is it underground? Are the walls sloped? Can overhead material collapse? What is the probability of a collapse or of the workers getting trapped due to flooding? They need the proper PPE and training to deal with all possibilities. 6) Rescue Plan Have a team ready to go in for rescue. Have a rescue plan laid out before any work is started and make sure that it's understood by everyone who could be involved. Untrained workers should never attempt a rescue. Rehearsal of every rescue situation is highly recommended. It may increase reaction times... 7) Quality over Quantity Don't risk a life over getting the job done sooner. Every life is valuable, and every worker must be trained for what they are working with. They MUST know how to respond in the event of an emergency. Make sure that yourself and everyone involved on the project is always fully trained to do their jobs safely in all aspects of it. Do you have any questions about confined space training or about creating a safety plan? Let us know below or give us a call! Our safety experts love to answer questions. The next training event for Confined Spaces Hazard Awareness for Construction is October 30th - do you want in? It's an excellent refresher or opportunity for your joint health and safety committee to partake in to help with developing rescue safety plans and really understanding the foundation of keeping safe while working or planning to be working in a confined space. Send us a message or give us a call: 1-705-812-1656 Toll Free: 1-877-738-9178 to book now or speak with us further about this or any other course. Stay Safe! -The Safety Team www.buildwithsafety.com

Construction has always been VITAL for our community growth and well being... This Remembrance Day 2020, we want to dive deeper into our understanding for those who lost their lives in many different ways during the course of history due to war and conflict. Construction has been deeply entrenched within the military system from day one as a vital integral part of survival.... Trenches, building of barracks and medical buildings, designing military vehicles and artillery - all the engineers, the mechanics, ALL the front line workers who conformed their daily lives to help out in the production of Canada's military infrastructure - THANK YOU. Thank you so much for your service. We will always be grateful and always remember your sacrifices. For more information on where more than 600,000 lost their lives check out: => http://ww1.canada.com//flanders-fields-yield-up-secrets-of. And here are some Canadian Memorials that stand today to honor Canadian lives who contributed to this beautiful and free country: https://www.canadainternational.gc.ca///route1915-17.aspx Thank you to our current working at heights trainees who participated in our office moment of silence at 11am. -The Safety Team www.buildwithsafety.com

Happy Monday Everyone! Did you know that since 2009, Ontario has had the lowest frequency of lost-time injury claims? Great job Ontario.... While any number is still too high, we would like to thank all other training providers who share our mission of providing up to date safety training and information that equips you to do your job safely and bring you home at the end of the day. The Ministry of Labour, Training Skills and Development department are increasing their number of inspectors! Increasing from 409 to 507, they're hiring 98 NEW SAFETY INSPECTORS to help since COVID. Are you aware of what happens when the Ministry of Labour conducts a site safety inspection?... They check the safety aspect side of things for legislative and regulatory compliance including: - Working on the same level (maintaining social distancing) - Housekeeping - Working from ladders and/or work platforms - Working on suspended access They observe to see what's going on, who is where, what are they doing, are they capable, are the rules & policies posted and followed, and what more can the employer, supervisor, and worker do so that no one gets hurt? There's also these aspects: - How many people are on the job site? - Who's working at heights? - Where is your copy of the health and safety policy and occupation health and safety act? - Are the COVID protocols posted and being followed? - Have any inspectors been here before? Are their visits recorded? - Does your safety program document the following: 1When did you last Inspect your equipment? 2Do you have training to use the forklift 3Do you have Working at Heights training and proper equipment? 4What are the emergency response procedures? **Always use fully inspected and compliant fall arrest gear, anchor to a safe point, and have a supervisor that is identifying actual or potential hazards while you are working at heights.** The inspector may respond to onsite issues in a number of ways. When there are corrections to be made, there may be a Forthwith order where you must correct the violation immediately There may be a Time Order issued with a time allocated to correct an issue Or a stop work order which can halt a portion of, or the whole project There are fixed fine offences that can be given to workers, supervisors and employers who are not wearing or using the appropriate equipment. Serious and repeating offences can be fined up to $1,000,000.00, and those responsible may be given jail time. ...But you cannot put a price on the emotional impact, when preventable injuries and deaths occur... Want to make your job site ready for inspection? Our expert safety consultants want to be your safety partner, give us a call 1-877-738-9178 or head to www.buildwithsafety.com Leave any questions or comments below, and have a safe day! -The Safety Team

I think it’s very important to have a feedback loop, where you’re constantly thinking about what you’ve done and how you could be doing it better. - Elon Musk, Entrepreneur Thank you everyone for providing us with feedback after you take each of our courses... ...We read it all and take it very seriously.... Our Program Developer is constantly researching, updating, and collaborating with our Expert Safety Trainers and Educators to bring up-to-date all you need to know information to get the job done safely tomorrow... If you have ANY questions, call us! Our most common questions asked are: When does working at heights expire? A: Three years from your training date Does Elevated Work Platform Training Expire? A: It’s not CSA recommended BUT it’s best practise to refresh your training with us every three years Does WHMIS expire? A: It does not expire, but according to the Ontario health and safety act S. 42(3) it is recommended that at least once a year that the employer should review WHMIS training. If the chemicals used in the workplace change, that is also an excellent opportunity for the employer to review WHMIS protocols with their team. Safety is paramount! No question is a bad question! Call us to see if you need to refresh any of your training or to ask us any safety training related questions: 705-812-1656 Thank you again to everyone who has given us a review on google, on our website, or in person after their training. -The Safety Team www.Buildwithsafety.com

#fallsawarenessweek2020 Tip #3 Harness inspections before, during, and after are AWESOME! 1) How is the webbing and weaving of the material?... 2) Is there much UV ray damage? 3) Can you read or find the manufacture tags & labels? 4) Is there any rust, material frays, or dirt like STUCCO? 5) Are you using the right WEIGHT for yourself + your clothes? While your harness may have a manufacturers date, it may not list an expiry. To that we say, if you inspect your harness daily and it continues to pass your safety checks then it's okay. However, a rule of thumb would be to replace your harness every 5 - 7 years if there are no expiry dates listed! DO YOU INSPECT YOUR HARNESS DAILY? We know the answer is yes, of course ;) Until next time, -The Safety Team www.buildwithsafety.com

Happy Falls Awareness Week! We will be dropping some out-of-the-box thinking prevention tips starting NOW until the 18th! The goal of this week is to encourage conversations in your workplace and with your friends regarding how to prevent falls of any kind: from heights or even on the ground.... Have you ever fallen at work? One of our expert safety consultants and trainers shared an exciting tip to start with: If housekeeping on site needs improvement, the risk of falls increases. A dusty, slippery, or cluttered workplace can compromise your safety system even when you're doing all the proper things, right? Remember: Circle checks, inspect your equipment & take it slow. Inspect the area and report what's safe and what's not - when you see something and say something, the problem can be solved. Safety is in everyone's interest, so follow us this week, because we're sharing some good tips to further prevent falls during this year's week of #fallawareness2020! Until next time, stay safe, and comment below if you have any fall prevention ideas you'd like to share. -The Safety Team

When guardrails aren't possible, what type of fall restraint system is best? There are four, and you must choose at least one of them. Preferably something with ZERO FALL POTENTIAL.,,... Our expert safety consultants agree that the first option should be: ....A Travel Restraint System! Why? This is because you can measure and set your distance from your anchor point, preventing you from falls and hazards. There are retractable ones as well, just like David is holding below! These retractable lifelines SNAP! when a fall or sudden movement is detected, and are usually designed to be anchored above the worker. ...such as when working on a bridge, or on rail cars & tankers! Where travel restraint isn't possible, warning barriers become EXTRA essential! As you know, it's ALSO EXTRA important to always read the manufacturers instructions. Things like expiry dates, fall length information, and weight conditions are key to pay attention to. Your lifelines have specific safety mechanisms in place and there are certain things you should be keeping an eye out for before, during, and after wearing your harness and using all your equipment. We hope this #fallsawarenessweek2020 tip was inspiring, please feel free to share our tips, and encourage everyone to talk about making our work places fall free places. Are you looking for working at heights or refresher training? Give us a call at: 1-877-738-9178 or go to www.buildwithsafety.com and see our upcoming training schedule to book now!
