Roads & Bridges has named Angus L. Macdonald Bridge in Halifax, NS as one of the top 10 bridges for 2017. Created in 2000, Roads & Bridges recognizes 10 bridges across North America each year based on project challenges, the impact each bridges as to the region, as well as the scope of work. The bridge sees approximately 45,000 vehicle crossings per day. Affectionately named "The Big Lift" the rehabilitation of the bridge was completed while keeping the bridge fully operation...al during peak driving hours. "Everything goes to gridlock if the Macdonald is taken out of service, so we knew we could not take the bridge out of service...or we would cripple traffic flow in the city," remarks Project Manager, John Eppell. COWI designed the bridge redecking and addressed the major challenges associated with extending the life of the bridge, and in doing so improved the transportation route for the local community and increased business in the harbour. The project was an outstanding engineering feat that will create a Nova Scotian legacy, transferring technology to the region, building the economy, and placing a spotlight on local engineering and innovation.
