Let’s talk about Blocked Cats for a minute; This beautiful cat’s name is Rusty. Rusty has been at the Riverview Animal Hospital for an extended stay due to a urinary blockage, however we are pleased to share that he is feeling much better and is finally going home to his family tonight!... We wanted to share Rusty’s story to start a conversation about blocked cats and to provide more information on what it means to be a blocked cat. Keep reading to learn more! A blocked cat is when the flow of urine is stopped, normally caused by the cat’s urethra being blocked by one of many variables (crystals, bladder stones, protein, etc.). When the urine stops (aka your cat being unable to pee), this waste builds up and negatively impacts the way that the cat’s body is working. GENIUS DOG ALERT When Emma's owners shared this video with Dr. Arsenault earlier today, we knew that we had to share it with all of you. Everyone, meet Emma. Emma came to see us today for her 6 week post-op appointment after undergoing a TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy). A TPLO is a surgery performed on dogs to stabilize the stifle joint after ruptures of the cranial cruciate ligament. Basically, Emma needed knee surgery. Her appointment today was to do follow u...p x-rays and she is doing extremely well. What makes Emma so special, is that she is a highly intelligent dog. In the video, you see that Emma is going up the stairs backwards instead of the normal head first approach. In doing this, she is putting less weight on her back legs (where her surgery was) rather than adding unnecessary weight to her operated leg. This puts 70% of her weight on her front legs and 30% on her back ones. On her own, she is actively protecting her back legs during the recovery process. Emma is by far one of the most intelligent dogs we have ever seen - in Dr. Arsenault‘s years of performing surgeries, he has never seen a dog protect itself in such a manner after a TPLO surgery. #animalhealth #learningandevelopment #veterinarymedicine

Blue-green algae thrives during hot seasons and can be found in non-flowing water including rivers, pools and decorative ponds. It makes the water look murky like pea soup or as if paint has been poured into it. Blue-green algae can FATALLY POISON all types of pets, but its especially harmful to dogs. Immediate veterinary care is crucial. How to Protect Your Pet: - If you see water with algae blooms, do not allow your dog to swim in it or to drink it.... - If your pet comes into contact with the algae, rinse them with fresh water, and take them to your veterinary team. - Know the symptoms of poisoning: difficulty breathing, lethargy, vomiting, seizures, convulsions, drooling. We will no longer have suggested appointment times for urgent care situations.... Please continue to call ahead to let us know that your pet is having an emergency and that you are on your way to the hospital. For our emergency services-evenings and weekends will be walk in only. Your pet will be triaged by a Veterinary technician, who will determine the priority in which your pet will be seen. Critical patients will be our top priority, and will be seen first. This will increase wait times for patients that are triaged as non-urgent. When you arrive at the hospital, call our front desk for further direction. We know that waiting in your cars for your pets appointment is not easy and that du...e to the safety measures in place appointments take longer than you are used to. We thank you for your understanding. The safety of our team members and clients is very important to us. As such, we will follow all provincial health standards by having extensive cleaning protocols, wearing masks and gloves, and practicing physical distancing as much as possible within our teams. We will also: Operate with a "closed waiting room" policy to protect our clients and staff. When you arrive, please remain outside the hospital and use your cell phone to call us. A staff member will then meet you outside to bring your pet into the hospital for an examination. The Veterinarian will call you to discuss the recommended treatment plan. After your appointment, a staff member will return your pet to you outside, and take care of any needed medications and payment. Credit card is the preferred payment method. Offer curbside pickup of food and medication (unless you have used our online store and are having your order delivered directly to your home). We are working hard to catch up on appointments that were unable to be scheduled during the emergency measures act.
