Dahlia May Flower Farm 11.01.2021

What does the most recent Provincial Announcement regarding lockdown restrictions mean for our farm and our ability to get our flowers in your hands? We will be going ahead with our original plans to reopen the farm on Friday January 22nd as planned, keeping in accordance with all of the provincial guidelines. Here’s what that will look like:... Online ordering, from the safety of your own home. Our website will be open to accept orders on Monday January 18th at 7pm, and the link to order will be https://www.dahliamayflowerfarm.com/collectio/fresh-flowers It’s the same way we’ve accepted orders since last March, and we are glad we have a system in place already. FREE delivery. Place your order online through our website and we will deliver it right to your doorstep for free on Friday, January 22, Saturday, January 23, and Sunday, January 24. We deliver in Quite West, Belleville, Brighton, Campbellford, and Prince Edward County. Curbside Pickup at our farm. Place your order through our website, and you will receive an email the morning of your chosen pickup date letting you know your order is ready. Come to the farm to pick up your order and we will have it all ready for you. In-store shopping will NOT be available. In accordance with provincial guidelines we will NOT be able to allow in-store purchases at the farmstand. Bummer, we know. For that reason we will not be restocking indoor plants yet. If we all do our part now, then hopefully by February we will be hosting you here on the farm for indoor shopping in our beautiful little plant snd flower shop. Until then, it’s online orders for delivery and curbside pickup only. Masks are required for curbside pickup orders. We will be doing our part to keep everyone safe. That means working with reduced staff to maintain distancing. What does working with reduced staff mean for YOU? It means you may have to be a little extra patient with us. It may take us a little bit of extra time to get back to your email, voicemail or message. We will be working hard to fulfil all of our online orders, and we will make sure we get back to you all as soon as we possibly can. Maintaining the safety of our community and our staff is our first priority. IMPORTANT NOTE: Any decisions that a small business makes are big decisions, and we recognize this as we do our best to make decisions with our communities safety, and our staffs safety in mind. We are all doing our best to serve our community, and make sure that we are not part of the problem. A little grace goes a long way with any small business these days as we wrestle with big decisions. We are grateful for your love and your support during these tough times. We are very much looking forward to brightening up your days with our fresh flowers, goodness knows our days need brightening right now.

We’ve done a little update to our online shop! Our online shop is now FULLY restocked with a wonderful selection of Italian Ranunculus Ranunculus and Anemone corms. You can find our selection at https://www.dahliamayflowerfarm.com/collections/corms These corms are perfect for those of you who would like to try your hands at growing your own Ranunculus snd Anemones in your home gardens this spring!... Worried these corms are hard to start? I used to be too when I first started growing them. The good news is that the process is fairly simple. We include a full page of detailed planting and growing instructions with every order (the exact process we use here at the farm to grow these beauties) and have a visual tutorial saved over in our Instagram ‘highlights’. These corms are perfect for planting in your home garden in April, and they will need to be started inside inside your home in March. This is the last shop update we will be doing before the spring, we will not be restocking any varieties as they sell out now, as all we have left is our own planting stock. If you would like to try your hand at growing these beauties now is a perfect opportunity! We ship these corms all across Canada. Unfortunately shipping to the US and overseas is not possible due to export laws. There is an option for you to pick up your corms when you place an order, however we do suggest that you place your orders for shipping at this time as our farm is currently closed to the public for the majority of January during the COVID-19 lockdown here in Ontario. We will be mailing all orders out ASAP so you will receive them in lots of time for planting.

Hope everyone is having a healthy New Year so far! Our farmstand is currently CLOSED for a Winter Break until January 18th. We will be reopening on January 22nd with DELIVERY ONLY, in accordance with the Ontario lockdown for COVID 19. Our farm store will NOT be open in January, we will be accepting orders online via our website, and offering contactless delivery right to your door. ... Remember how we did it in March? Well, we are playing it again. At least this time we have the advantage of having done it once before. Hopefully that means things will run a little smoother this go around! We are looking forward to serving you again soon!

Our farm is closing for winter holidays from December 25-January 18th to give our staff a well deserved rest and break. Everyone here has worked tirelessly to serve the public during the last 8 months of this pandemic and we are needing to take a little time to catch our breath and rest up. We would love to connect with you before our winter break! Looking forward to seeing you and serving you soon. Just a reminder that we are not currently accepting cash at the farm. What’s next and WHEN are you open?! Those are the two questions we are hearing daily right now. I hear you, and I love that you are interested snd are already missing our flowers! Our farmstand is currently CLOSED for a Winter Break until January 18th.... We will be reopening on January 22nd with DELIVERY ONLY, in accordance with the Ontario lockdown for COVID 19. Our farm store will NOT be open in January, we will be accepting orders online via our website, and offering contactless delivery right to your door. Remember how we did it in March? Well, we are playing it again. At least this time we have the advantage of having done it once before. Hopefully that means things will run a little smoother this go around! It’s been a long, busy and abundant year here on the farm. Our staff have worked extra hard and put in plenty of overtime as we pushed through growing 3 acres of cut flowers this summer, planting over 65,000 bulbs this fall (yes, by hand) and producing countless planters and wreaths for the holidays. We flipped our business model on its head last March, launched an online shop and started a full delivery service. The learning curves were HUGE this year and our staff was INCREDIBLE as we all learned together. To be honest, we are tired. It’s been a long haul. Working full time through a pandemic has been a LOT. For all of us. These quiet January days are the perfect time for the staff and I both to focus on family and rest. Behind the scenes planning for 2021 is well under way. 2020 forced us to rethink everything, and we are excited to take what we’ve learned in that hard year and apply it to serving you as best we can in these uncertain times. We have some pretty exceptional beauty planned for 2021 already!! Thank you, as always, for the interest you show in our little farm and big dreams! I love you guys so much!

UPDATES YOU NEED: Today’s provincial government announcement has given us guidance on how the end of your Christmas season will look here at the farm and here is what you need to know: TUESDAY ... We will be OPEN 9-5 with fresh bouquets, centrepieces and more. Preorders for delivery and pickup are all sold out now for the holidays. AFTER CHRISTMAS Our farmstand will be CLOSED for a 3 week shutdown to give our staff a much need break after an incredibly hard year. We will return to work January 18th, and our business will likely be delivery/curbside pickup only as Ontario will be in a mandatory shutdown until the end of January. Phew. What a year. We are grateful to have the opportunity to finish out our holiday season here at the farm, to serve you right up until Christmas, and to be able to end this year on a high note. It’s been a tough year and we have been wildly grateful for every bit of support you have sent our way. We are very much looking forward to our last few days here with you at the farm. As a reminder, we are not accepting cash at this time here at the farmstand. Debit and credit are available. WE MADE IT! Tonight we are leaving 2020 behind us, but here’s the thing: Yes, the calendar is turning a page. ... Yes, we are all ready to shake 2020. But nothing changes unless we do. As the calendar turns it’s page a pandemic still pushes through the world. Our small business still struggle while large corporations see record growth. Our healthcare system remains over burdened and our essential workers are exhausted. Our tendency to seek comfort has #blacklivesmatter dropping out of the news cycle. Bear with me here. You’re wondering where all of this is going, right? And why I’m not able to just post a simple ‘Happy New Year, see you later 2020 ’ post? 2020 had been EXCEPTIONALLY hard for so many of us, and as we see it out the door I’m asking myself this question: Who will I have to become to have success in 2021? Nothing changes unless we do, and I’m holding myself accountable for what I wish to receive in 2021. 2020 was a test in just about every way, and I have some big dreams for where I want to bring my farm, my business and my life in 2021. I’m headed into 2021 knowing that I want to become more disciplined. I want to become better at setting boundaries and honouring them, not apologizing for them. I want to become more proactive. I want to become better at taking care of myself. I want to become a better grower. I don’t believe in resolutions, but I believe in setting intentions for the year ahead and I’ll be spending the evening setting my intentions for how I can make the most of whatever 2021 has instore for us. I’m wishing each and every one of you good health, happiness, and strength for the challenges ahead. If you are feeling brave go ahead snd answer the question Who will I have to become to have success in 2021 below so that we can cheer each other on! Sending so much love to all of you! Christmas kind of fell apart here two years ago, although I’ve always had a difficult relationship with the holiday. Growing up with a father with addiction issues made holidays tough. The pressure. It’s hard on anyone sometimes, but it’s harder when you are already struggling. It broke my heart to lose my father 7 years ago, and a big part of that pain was the feeling in the back corner of my heart that the holidays would get a little ‘easier’ now. That I could enjoy them l...ike all of the other seemingly normal families I was surrounded by. My mother came home from the hospital or nursing home on a ‘day pass’ for Christmas Day every year. All I ever wanted for Christmas was one day where we were all together. Happy. Like everyone else. For years after my father was gone I poured my heart into making our home welcoming, festive and full of love for her on that one big day. It’s been two years now since my Mom died. It’s been two years since I’ve put up a Christmas tree in our living room. Two years since I’ve laid to rest my ideas about what an ‘easy’ Christmas looks like. I share this with you only because I want you to know that if the holidays were hard for you, you are NOT alone. It’s was hard for a lot of us. This year especially, as we are separated from our families by a pandemic and lockdowns. It’s ok if you don’t get your tree up this year. It’s ok if you didn’t bake cookies using Grandmas recipe. It’s ok if you don’t get those Christmas cards mailed. It’s ok if you don’t have a wreath on your door or a planter on your step. It’s ok if you hate Zoom and just wish you could hug your loved ones. You are doing the best that you can and it’s enough. We made it through, and maybe next year will be easier. As we head into the New Year remember this: Practice self care. Remember to be grateful for your health. Don’t beat yourself up over what you haven’t done or accomplished in 2020. This year just making it through was more than enough. Tell someone you love them. Post the one thing you are most grateful for in 2020 below

If there’s one thing we can all agree on it has to be this: 2020 has been an exhausting year. For all of us. In all the ways. For some it’s been emotionally draining, for others it’s been financially draining. For many it’s been both. Our lives have been turned upside down, we’ve lost loved ones and had to grieve alone, our healthcare system has been overburdened, our essential workers have been overworked and often underpaid, and our small businesses and those who ma...ke their livings in the arts have been in the fights of their lives for the survival of their careers and their livelihoods. We pivoted, and pivoted again. I know so many of you are exhausted by the uncertainty. I see you, and I feel it too. Nothing about change is ever easy snd this year has been nothing BUT change. Here in Ontario we are waiting on an announcement by the provincial government on Monday, outlining new closures and lockdown measures. As citizens who care deeply about the health of our community and our staff we 100% understand how important these measures are to stop the spread of a deadly virus and we support these measures. As business owners I’d be disingenuous if I didn’t say we are nervous about what this means fir the remainder of our holiday sales season. We rely on a busy holiday season to keep the lights on at our farm during a long, cold and quiet January. With talk of further lockdowns beginning on Christmas Eve, if you were looking to purchase flowers from our farm for the holidays I would kindly suggest that you do so on Tuesday or Wednesday, as we may not be able open on Thursday for Christmas Eve. The link to place an order for delivery this week is https://www.dahliamayflowerfarm.com/collectio/fresh-flowers , and our farmstand will be open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from nine till five. Our Fresh Flower stock for the week arrives at the farm on Monday, and we anticipate being fully stocked with fresh Arrangements and Centrepieces for Tuesday and Wednesday. Looking for a way to support our farm, or ANY of your favourite local businesses over the holidays that is absolutely FREE? Please consider leaving your favourite small business a Google review They are EVERYTHING to us!

MORE WINTER PLANTERS AVAILABLE You keep asking for them and we keep making them! There is a fresh batch of 40 Winter planters available here at the farm today from 10-5. The planters are $55 each.... It doesn’t get any fresher than this. We cut the greens yesterday morning and made these planters yesterday afternoon and yesterday night for you. We are committed to offering you the highest quality we can at a reasonable price. HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR PLANTERS The best part of outdoor winter planters is that they are so easy to look after! When temperatures are mild you can water your planter 2-3 times per week to keep the greenery hydrated. Once the temperatures have cooled off and your planter begins to freeze up for the season you will not have to water or provide any further main. The cold temperatures, snow and rain that the plant receives outside in the winter is all the moisture required to keep these beauties looking wonderful all season long.

LAST DELIVERIES BEFORE CHRISTMAS! Our last delivery dates before Christmas are Tuesday December 22nd and Wednesday December 23rd. Delivery is still FREE and preorders are now available at https://www.dahliamayflowerfarm.com/collectio/fresh-flowers We deliver our flowers to the following areas:... Belleville, Brighton, Campbellford, Codrington, Colborne, Foxboro, Frankford, Prince Edward County, Stirling, Trenton, Warkworth, Wooler Here’s what we need you to know Quantities are limited this week, as are supplies, due to an unprecedented demand this winter. We’ve been working around the clock to make sure we can continue to offer up the most beautiful holiday arrangements to you. Right now supplies are starting to run low and we are unable to source additional containers because our suppliers are sold out too. The supply chain has been very complicated for the last eight months through Covid, and it seems like we are hitting crunch time now here ahead of Christmas. What does that mean? Basically it means that a preorder is definitely the move to ensure that you get what you would like. We will be working hard to supply the farmstand with beautiful offerings for walk-in customers this week, however we always fill pre-orders first to ensure that our customers get what they have ordered. If you would like to place a pre-order the spot to do so is https://www.dahliamayflowerfarm.com/collectio/fresh-flowers Your support over this holiday season has been more incredible than we could’ve ever imagined. You’ve allowed us to help you decorate your front steps with winter planters, you’ve allowed us to help grace your doors with fresh wreaths, and you have almost sold us out of fresh centrepieces. You’ve been incredibly kind when all of our red berries froze earlier this week and sent us an outpouring of love telling us that you were happy to receive the pink berry substitution we had to make. We have hit the customer lottery having a group of people as incredible as you behind our business. We never forget it. We can’t wait to create these holiday centrepieces for you this coming week!

Well friends, we are going to need to ask you for a little grace over the next few days. We’ve had a tiny setback. Over the last two days we e works so hard to get ourselves ahead, filling all orders snd building up lots of extra inventory in fresh arrangements because we KNOW it’s going to be a busy week. Our tiny farm is so short of infrastructure, and our cooler is packed full. We ran out of room, so we set up one of our greenhouses to hold the Holiday Tim and Small arran...Continue reading

Can we just talk about today for a moment? I’m having a hard time believing how fortunate we are to have the customers and community that we do here at this farm. Today our customers showed up for us in the most incredible way.... Today should have been our annual Winter Open House. Normally we would have had our greenhouse transformed into a Christmas Market, normally there would have been a bonfire on and a s’mores station for the kids. Normally there would have been free hot apple cider and customers would have been encouraged to gather. But this isn’t a normal year, is it? We chose not to host a Winter Open House this year, and we were not sure what to expect this weekend. We always feel the pressure in November and December as we know that these months of income must be responsible for keeping the lights on and the staff paid in January when we are closed for a much needed winter rest. You blew us away today. You really did. You showed up, you brought your masks, you social distanced, you respected our COVID rules, you practiced patience while you waited your turn and you collectively left with every planter we could produce for you, and half our wreath inventory. I really don’t have the words for my gratitude. Thank you. Thank you so much. We are making a go of running a farm 2h away from the big cities in a small little pocket of southern Ontario on a country road 10km outside of town. That doesn’t happen without tremendous customer support. It also doesn’t happen without incredible staff. Biggest and deepest thanks to our staff of 15 who have been working around the clock to make items that may be bright sport in your holiday celebrations. One of the biggest gifts that 2020 has given me is this team of people who care so much about what we do, how we do it and WHO we do it for. Our farmstand IS OPEN Sunday from 10-5 and we are burning the midnight oil to make sure we have more planters available for you at the farmstand on Sunday. Biggest thanks to all of you who shop small. You are making a big difference to real people and we are so grateful for you.

WINTER PLANTER AVAILABILITY! Our planters have been selling out in record time this year and it’s been keeping us on our toes to produce more for you. It’s been a wild holiday season so far and we are beyond grateful for all of your support! We will be keeping you updated daily right here so that you know that’s available at the farm.... THURSDAY November 19th there is a batch of 40 freshly made planters available at $55 each. FRIDAY November 20th there will be a batch of 40 freshly made planters available at $55 each. SATURDAY November 21st there will be a batch of 60 freshly made planters available at $55 each. SUNDAY November 22nd we will not be making a batch, if there are planters still available from the previous 3 batches we will let you know Sunday morning. (Our design team will be working Sunday to complete all of the preorders we have for Monday/Tuesday) Our farmstand is also fully stocked with fresh berries, bunches of greenery, magnolia leaves and more for any customers looking to DIY their own planters. There is an incredible selection of handmade wreaths available here at the farm this week as well, with prices ranging from $50-90. Important note about our planters: We arrange each one of these planters by hand ourselves right here in our greenhouse at the farm. We cut the majority of the evergreens ourselves as well, and source cut evergreens from other local farms. We do this because we know that fresh cut greenery makes planters last exceptionally well. These planters will last well into February for you. Because of the labour involved in cutting our own greens and making these planters by hand here at the farm, we are only able to produce a certain number of planters per day. We will continue to do our best to make sure the farmstand is well-stocked this week. As always, we are so grateful for your support!

Our farmstand this fall, as captured by the incredible Johnny CY Lam Quick little story about this photo: On Saturday September 19th I was scheduled to have a photo shoot with Johnny herd at the farm. We were going to capture the three acres of flowers in bloom on the farm. ... Heading into this weekend the field had never looked more beautiful. The crops were looking the BEST they had looked all summer and we were so excited to capture it all. Enter an unexpected visitor: A hard freeze on Friday night, killing almost everything in our three acre flower field. On Saturday morning I let Johnny know we would have to alter our plans. I wasnt about to cancel this shoot, Johnnys time is valuable and we had a commitment. I had to pivot this shoot quickly. Within 2 hours of Johnny arriving we rallied. We headed to a local farm and bought up plenty of pumpkins and gourds. We set up the best fall displays that we could and captured some really beautiful images, including this one. This wasnt the plan. But really, nothing in 2020 has gone according to plan. And here we are making it work. Big hugs and love to Johnny Lam for making magic for us on a day that could have felt anything BUT magical. Artists, creatives and farmers rally when things get hard. Its just what we do. And the results are worth it.

Dahlia May Flower Farm 30.08.2020

We are OPEN today and fully stocked with the last hurrah of our own field grown cut flowers! The farmstand is full of jars for freshly harvested Dahlias, bouquets of fresh Strawflowers and mason jars of mixed blooms. These flowers were all harvested just before the big freeze, and they are a beautiful reminder of what we had just days ago at the farm. ... Today will be your last opportunity to purchase these particular types of blooms. While our farm will remain open and stocked with locally grown blooms right through until Christmas we will begin to have to source them on from other local growers. Many of the varieties we grow here at our farm are not varieties found elsewhere. We love growing these special items for you, and its so sad to lose these flowers 3-4 weeks early. Come on out today from 9-5 for the last harvest from our own fields! The flowers are gorgeous and we are looking forward to seeing you! Potted mums and pumpkins are also available for fall decorating now!

Dahlia May Flower Farm 27.08.2020

IMPORTANT UPDATES! Two things: 1- We are NOT closing! 2- We are SO grateful for your outpouring of love!... Its been brought to our attention that our customers may think our farm is closing now that we have had a hard frost, killing our field crops. This is definitely NOT the case. Our farm remains open from now through until Christmas Eve. Things may look a little different, and heres what you can expect from us in the weeks and months ahead as we find our feet again after this unexpected early frost: Our farmstand will be FULL of fresh flowers Sunday from 10-5! We harvested hard yesterday, and held enough stock back on Saturday to make sure we could offer you flowers right through the weekend. There will be a gorgeous selection of flowers available Sunday. Moving forward we will be working hand in hand with our local Ontario grower friends and community to source in fresh Ontario grown blooms for you throughout September and October. In Early October we will be offering tulip and daffodil bulbs and ranunculus corms for YOU to plant in your own gardens. The same gorgeous varieties we grow right here at the farm. Look for more information here soon about our online bulb shop. In November we will be harvesting our evergreens and offering up outdoor planters, handmade wreaths and more. In December we will be offering potted holiday plants, fresh holiday centrepieces and fresh cut Christmas trees. In January we close for two weeks to hibernate. To sleep, read, and have a moment to digest just exactly what 2020 was really all about. We are SO grateful for your support, kindness, and the ways you so genuinely care for our small farm and show up for us. Thank you so much for the love.

Dahlia May Flower Farm 07.08.2020

Thats a wrap on our 2020 outdoor growing season. Our three acres of field grown cut flowers were all taken out by a hard freeze in the early hours of the morning. It didnt matter how optimistic we were and what we tried to do to protect the crops, this wasnt a light frost, it was a hard freeze. ... In seven years of growing cut flowers and a couple decades of gardening Ive never seen anything like a hard freeze in mid September in our part of Southern Ontario. Our farm, and the farms of so many of my closest grower friends, were all hit with a hard freeze last night. One of my very favourite Mary Oliver quotes is this one: Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this too, was a gift. At the heart of that quote is this: We have the opportunity to look at everything as a gift. Everything that is hard is a learning experience. So heres the gift in a hard freeze in mid-September on our flower farm: We now have the opportunity to take a deep dive into an early fall cleanup. We will be able to get the farm into incredible shape as we prepare for our spring planting. We will have the time to focus on receiving the 60,000 spring bulbs that are headed our way next week for planting on the farm. We will be able to focus on our upcoming bulb sale offering YOU, our customers, an opportunity to purchase bulbs of all of the beautiful tulips and daffodils we grow on the farm each spring. There will be a little extra time in the evenings now (since we will not be out harvesting) to focus on family and friends. This is a hard hit to our farm, but there is opportunity everywhere to be optimistic. Optimism doesnt make the lost any less real. When this freeze took out our 3 acres of flowers we lost tens of thousands of dollars in inventory. Thats pretty hard to swallow, especially when our crops have never looked better and the demand for our fresh flowers is still so strong. We will be working hard with all of the greenhouse growers in Ontario to continue to supply you with beautiful blooms throughout September and October. The frost changes things, but it isnt the end. More beauty still to come. Our farmstand is OPEN today from 9-5 and fully stocked with fresh flowers that we harvested yesterday.

It looks like its all coming to an end tonight. We grow 3 acres of flowers in open fields here at our farm and tonight we are facing a forecast that includes a frost warning. The temperatures will dip down to zero on a clear night, which means its quite likely that we will lose our entire field. Farming isnt for the faint of heart. Nothing about it is easy. Every year the challenges are different, but every year there are challenges. This years season has been full of c...hallenges from the very beginning of the summer. Our July here at the farm was very dry. Extreme heat in July followed the dry spring. The heat brought on our crops earlier than ever, but the spring drought stunted the growth and all of our stems were extremely short on many of our key crops. Thank goodness our customers like to purchase blooms in Mason jars, because it was the only way we were able to sell many of our summer crops for the first six weeks of the season with such short stems. It was only two weeks ago that the crops finally started to hit their stride. September brought rain and cooler temperatures and our crops began to flourish. Our Dahlias finally started pumping out the blooms two weeks ago and this week they were looking better than ever. We were so thrilled with the crops over these last two weeks, given the hard summer weve had. Typically by the time Frost rolls around we are ready. Frost usually find our farm in early to mid October. By October we are exhausted. We are ready to let go. We are ready to move on to fall cleanup and spring planting. September is different. In September we are not even close to ready to let it all go. We feel energized. Our crops are looking better than ever and all of our hard work has finally started to feel rewarding. We are nowhere near ready to let go yet. Lets talk about the economics of an early frost too. Its impossible not to acknowledge that a frost 3 to 4 weeks early brings with it a loss of tens of thousands of dollars to a farm in crops that will now go unharvested. Sending extra love to anyone who makes their living on the land. This year has been a hard one for so many.

We survived the the warning weve been dreading! Last night was the first Frost warning of the season, and its the kind of warning we dread in September. Its too early for a frost here, and with three full acres in bloom and at least 4 weeks left in the growing season we certainly held our breath as the temperatures dropped last night. This morning we work up to dew drenched fields and no frost damage, and it was such a relief!... Our farmstand is FULL of freshly harvested blooms today and this frost warning serves as a gentle reminder that our time with these flowers is limited now. Today at the farm you will find the following: Mason Jars of blooms $30 each of 2/$50 Zinnia Jars $12 each Zinnia bunches $15 each Sunflower bunches $12 each Our farmstand is open from 9-5 and we accept debit and credit for payment. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Just about everything this year has felt like a stretch, and September isnt feeling much different. The days feel long, yet the daylight is fading so quickly. The temperatures are dropping and the workload is doubling. The reality of working 7 days a week for 7 months is staring to set in. Fall chores are staring us down. The crops are really staring to hit their stride, and frost is less than a month away. The thought of losing all of our hard work to Mother Nature so soon ...is a strange mix of sadness and relief. . Our customers are rallying hard around our farm this September, and honestly, its the push we need to make it through the rest of the season. Our September Flower Subscriptions sold a record 140 shares this month, and every week weve been working hard to harvest, prepare and arrange 140 special bouquets in addition to our farmstand stock and weekly delivery orders. Im totally blown away by these orders. 140 CSA shares is almost double any CSA Subscription we have ever produced. If youd have told me 5 years ago that wed be farming at a level where we could pull this off, AND have the customer support like this I wouldnt have believed it. We do a small thing here in our tiny part of the world. We farm a few acres of flowers and source extra blooms from a pretty awesome network of grower friends. This year, more than EVER before, weve been reminded that this small job matters. We bring joy to people via flowers. We facilitate connections. We bridge the socially distant gap between loved ones. What a freaking gift. All of it. Thank you for pulling us through September. Thank you for encouraging us and reminding us of our WHY.

FLOWERS STILL AVAILABLE AT The Brake Room! Yesterday marked the long awaited return of weekly flowers to The Brake Room Cafe, and you totally blew us away! The fresh flowers sold out by 1pm, and we did an emergency harvest, followed by a quick restock! By 3pm there were more freshly cut Dahlias available. This morning The Brake Room has 30 bunches of freshly harvested dahlias available at $25 each. These flowers were just freshly cut, and they are beautiful!... PLEASE NOTE: The Brake Room closes today at 1pm. We are taking notes and will be making sure that next week we have plenty more fresh flowers available for you on Friday morning! We owe you all the biggest thanks for all of your support! We are so grateful.

HEADS UP BELLEVILLE FLOWER LOVERS Its been a looong time coming and we are SO excited to let you know that you can now find our flowers at The Brake Room Cafe again every Friday and Saturday! COVID 19 threw a wrench into our spring and summer plans for flowers weekly at @thebrakeroom (I mean, Covid threw a wrench into a lot of things, right?!) but our farm team and the Brake Room team have been working hard to find a way to serve you up fall blooms this September.... Heres how its going to work: Flowers will be delivered to The Brake Room every Friday and Saturday mornings at 8am. Photos of the flowers that are available will be posted the night before on Facebook and Instagram (go check our stories!) The Brake Room staff will have the flowers behind the counter and when you ask for a bunch they will pass them to you. You wont be able to pick your own bunch out open air style the way we used to do it, but you will be able to see the flowers before purchasing and you will see photos on social media with whats available. The first delivery to The Brake Room is this Friday (September 11th) at 8am, with more blooms arriving at the Cafe on Saturday morning. No preorders necessary, our flower inventory will be well stocked. This is all going to work a little differently than it used to, but we are hoping you will help both us and @thebrakeroom make it work! This weeks bouquets are mixed bunches of Dahlias (pictured here) at $25 each, all cut this morning! Can you give us a hand and tag a Belleville friend who may want to know there are blooms at The Brake Room again? So grateful for your help in spreading the word!!

We were not prepared. Like, at all. I mean, we thought we were prepared. But we were wrong.... We seriously couldnt have anticipated how many of you would show up for us and come out to the farm today for labour day. Weve spent the entire weekend pulling 12-14 hours days of harvesting and hustling to make sure we had this farmstand well stocked. We get up every morning at 5am to hit the field for 6, and we pull in the last harvests of the day at 8pm as the sun slips away. We thought wed cut lots of flowers, and we gave most of the staff (who work so damn hard here!) the day off, running a lean crew of two. Then you all showed up. Wow. So many of you took road trips out to the farm today to stock up on fresh flowers and potted fall mums. You brought your friends, you brought your kids, and you brought your patience. There were lines, and you were gracious. You waited your turn, and were so kind to us as we hustled to make it happen. We were understaffed and you were patient. We havent had a day this busy in months, and on labour day, as the dust settles, Im feeling WILDLY grateful to have the opportunity to labour for YOU, our incredible customers. Thank you for showing up for us time and time again, and for reminding us that what we do here growing flowers locally matters. None of it is possible without you. Weve rallied hard tonight, harvested into the dark again, and are now fully restocked with fresh flowers for when our shop reopens Tuesday at 9am. If you stopped by today please say hi in the comments and tell me where you cane from! Id love to personally thank you! Dahlia pictured here is Castle Drive, from our friends at @buttsberryfarm

We have 30 bunches of these dahlias available right here at the farmstand on Wednesday September 2nd (tomorrow!) from 9-5 (while supplies last). It was a hard call deciding whether we should do mixed bunches or bunches of single colours. We asked you, and your votes were basically split right down the middle. Many of you love single colours of these special blooms, and many of you want all of the mixed colours. In the end we decided to make mixed coloured bunches and they turned out SOOO pretty! Thursday is the only day this week that Dahlias will be available for free delivery, so if youd like them I would suggest getting an order in as quantities are limited. Delivery is still available on Friday and Saturday for mason jars of mixed blooms and for mixed bouquets. LAST CALL! If you would like to join our September Flower subscription then consider this your last call! There are just 6 subscription shares left in our online shop for delivery in the Bay of Quinte area and PEC or for pickup at our farm. You can grab them through https://www.dahliamayflowerfarm.com/collectio/fresh-flowers So what exactly IS a flower subscription anyway?... Our flower subscriptions are one month of weekly bouquets harvested here on our farm and delivered to your door, or wrapped and ready for pickup at our farm. Subscribers receive one farm fresh bouquet every Friday in September (4 weeks of flowers) and they have the option of contactless delivery, OR farmstand pickup. Why sign up for a bouquet subscription? A few reasons: 1 You receive farm fresh flowers every week for a month! Thats an awesome treat, and these subscriptions make the best gifts! 2 You get extra value in your bouquet every week! Our subscription prices work out to about $25/week, but our subscription members receive bouquets worth $35-40 every week. Why? Because our members have committed to us for a whole month, we commit to them by bringing extra value to their orders. 3 You are helping a small local farm succeed through challenging times. Seriously, I think we can ALLL agree that 2020 has been hard. As a small seasonal business based in agriculture (working at the whim of Mother Nature) we are certainly feeling it. Weve had to invest heavily in infrastructure this year, and when you pay upfront for a month of flowers that investment in us goes DIRECTLY to farm infrastructure that we desperately need. You make it happen, and we cant build this farm without you. There are only 6 shares available still in the online shop. The link is https://www.dahliamayflowerfarm.com/collectio/fresh-flowers if you would like to check out whats available and place an order. In August we were able to flower for just over 70 Flower Subscription members, and that member support paid for the excavation needed for the new heated greenhouse we are building. Is anyone else struggling with connection and communication these COVID Days? Ill be honest, in the beginning I found social distancing and self isolation easy. Im naturally a shy and introverted person, and for me it wasnt hard to move to connecting online and through technology, over person interactions. I love writing and creating content because they are both solitary ventures. As an only child Im used to quiet time alone and its where I thrive. I loved putting writ...ing out into the world as a way to stay connected, just as much as I loved the quiet that surrounded me. As weve began to enter Phase 3 of reopening I find myself failing in the communication department daily. Masks are mandatory in indoor and retail spaces here in Ontario (a decision I support unequivocally and comply with) but its caught me off guard how easily Ive been missing the subtle communication cues that I didnt realize I relied on so heavily. Now that all of our customers (and myself and our staff) are wearing masks, and many times hats and sunglasses as its summertime, Im missing the visual cues I didnt realize I needed. Sometimes I dont recognized customers that I should know behind their face coverings. Sometimes I miss hearing a customer speak to me as a mask muffles their sound, particularly in our often noisy outdoor roadside environment. Sometimes customers miss hearing me reply to them because Im soft spoken. Ive lost the ability to lip read, and I wasnt aware of how much I previously relied on it. I make the effort to make eye contact, but customers do not see me smile in acknowledgment of them anymore. Maintaining social distancing is important and keeps us all healthy, and Im realizing that distance and face coverings affects how people perceive interactions. As a person who is normally quiet and shy Im learning that this can be perceived as distant and stand-offish, which is certainly never my intention. With mandatory limits on the number of people in a building Im not able to stay and talk with customers as I restock the stand, as my presence crowds the store staff and customers. We work so hard to provide the best products we can, and we always try to provide the best service too. Much seems lost in translation in these new times. Our hearts go out to the frontline workers in healthcare and education. As much as we are finding retail difficult these days we know there are many industries where the challenges are much greater. We are keenly aware of the accessibility gap that forms as our communications change. How are you adapting to communication in these challenging times? Are you finding this difficult to navigate too?
