Hello! We’re the Slaymaker’s! Reese (2) Charlee (4), Birkley (7), Christine + Rylie (38/39 + 1000covid years ). At the heart of every small business is family and behind every small business is a story. We’d like to kick off 2021 by sharing ours. Rylie and I were both born and raised right here in Red Deer. In fact, we first met in Kindergarten at GH Dawe school. After high school I went on to pursue my dance training in Vancouver and Toronto, later performing on Cruise Sh...ips. Rylie also moved away for school and a few years later, we circled back home to settle into our roots and start a new life back in RD. It was then, now 15 years ago, by a seeming twist of faith, we met Val Jensen - founder of DMS. When she started Dance Magic 33 years ago, she had 32 students and a dream to create a non-competitive space for kids of all abilities to learn and grow. A space, where everyone’s a star!. It was July of 2006, when her growing dance family became ours. We’ve walked through many life experiences in this time, alongside the most incredible team of passionate, hardworking people. Flash mobs, fundraisers, community events, travel, performances, farmers markets, dance camps, moving studios, building studios, moving houses, parades, recitals, dancing, marriage, music, acrobatics, aerial, preschool, babies, babies and more babies. Oh, and that time we launched an online studio during the global pandemic. Woven in each of these experiences is a common thread, - Family + Community. You see, looking ahead to 2021, feels a bit like leaning into past experiences. 33 years ago Dance Magic Studio was created with a purpose. It was built to lead kids through dance + life with the valuable lessons of the Performing Arts. The very lessons that lead me personally, to a life of business ownership and entrepreneurship. Who knew a pirouette and a plié would have played such an important part in carving this future. Students grow their potential here. They learn to lead, to love and to live in their passion. Most importantly, they go on to be and see incredible things. In 2021, we’ll be looking to the memories for clarity and vision of what’s ahead. We’ll be building the greatest version of ourselves, that will be here for kids and the community even 30 years from now. I envision a new family will tell their DMS story then, (maybe we become the grandparents in the picture). However this journey unfolds, DMS will be a part of our story and if we’ve done our work to it’s fullest, we’ll be a part of yours too. I trust the experiences will continue to be rich in growth and personal development. Let the beginning of 2021 be the start of our next chapter. Let the pages keep turning and let us always do our best to stand beside our families and our community - each step of the way. That’s my wish for 2021. Growth, experience and JOY for the journey.
