We love treating kids at Midtown Dental! We try to make every visit as positive as possible and involve children and parents in their oral health. That includes demonstrating proper brushing and flossing techniques and evaluating and discussing risk factors for tooth decay or other oral health issues. In addition to educating patients and removing stains and plaque from the teeth, a children's dental exam may involve X-rays, sealants, fluoride treatment, pre-orthodontic evaluations, or restorations. Book an appointment for your child today! (506) 458-5606

Do you know what to do if you accidentally lose a tooth? It's important to act quickly. Pick it up carefully and hold it by the top of the tooth not the root and store it in a container of milk, and if you don’t have milk, use saliva or water. Don’t rinse the tooth or let it dry out. Call us right away for further instructions. (506) 458-5606
Do you do a spot check when you’re done cleaning your braces? That’s one simple way to make sure you got everything. Give yourself a big smile as you check for any missed food or plaque from multiple angles and touch up any areas you’ve missed.
Need a refresher about the rules of the orange phase? We've got you covered.
The Government of NB declared that Zone 3 should also revert back to the Orange phase under their Covid-19 plan, along with Zones 1 and 2. PLEASE NOTE: There i...s no longer an Atlantic Bubble. It is important to note that dental staff in Zones 1. 2 and 3 are still practicing and providing services to patients in their respective regions. The government is asking people to ‘stay in place’ and wear a mask at all times when in public. ** If you are not a resident of Zone 1, 2 or 3 but have travelled to either zone or outside the province in the past two weeks, treatment may be deferred for at least 14 days unless identified as an emergency.
We are closed today to remember all those who made sacrifices for Canada lest we forget.
Sometimes parents wonder when their child is considered ready to brush their teeth without help. While every child is different, we find age 6-9 is usually when a child has the dexterity to brush on their own. Watch this video to find out more.
Dental checkups are an essential part of maintaining good oral health. First, we remove stains and build-up on teeth above and below the gumline. Then we look for signs of tooth decay and gum disease, check the bite and jaw for problems, evaluate any new risk factors such as a change in medication, conduct an oral cancer screening, assess problem areas, and make recommendations for further treatment. Sometimes this involves taking a closer look with a dental X-ray. We also demonstrate proper cleaning techniques or provide tips to help patients reach any problem areas when brushing and flossing at home. Call us today to book a dental checkup (506) 458-5606!
Make the most of 2020! Book an appointment now to use up any remaining dental benefits before your insurance plan resets on December 31st.
Veneers are used to close spaces, repair chipped teeth, or cover tooth defects or imperfections. A porcelain veneer is a very thin layer of porcelain that is bonded to a prepared tooth. Veneers can also be made out of composite resin, which is layered onto a prepared tooth and then shaped. We’d be happy to answer any questions about veneers at your next visit.
Be sure to wash your hands before you floss!
Remember to keep 12 toothbrush lengths away from others in the office when you’re not receiving treatment!
Night guards can protect your teeth while you're sleeping. Jaw pain, clicking noises or headaches in the morning might mean that you are grinding your teeth during the night. This can cause excessive wear and tear, including chipping or cracking. Ask us about a custom night guard to protect your teeth. (506) 458-5606
Flossing isn't so much about removing bits of food stuck between your teeth although it's great for that! Flossing's main function is to get rid of the plaque that forms between teeth and along the gum line. That keeps teeth and gums happy and healthy, and prevents cavities between your teeth. So be sure to floss every day!
When placing the floss between the teeth, it’s important to be gentle. Snapping the floss into the gums can cause damage and recession. Also, we want to avoid forcing bits of plaque or food between the teeth. Use a gentle zig-zag motion to get the floss into the correct position for flossing and if the floss doesn’t want to go in, don’t force it. Remember to floss every day!
Palatal expanders can be used while children are still growing to help widen the upper jaw. Widening the upper jaw can make room for adult teeth, reduce overcrowding, and correct a crossbite. A palatal expander can improve breathing by opening the oral and nasal passages and allowing the patient to breathe through the nose. If your child is aged 7-10, ask us about this and other early orthodontic treatments! (506) 458-5606
At Midtown Dental, we offer night guards to help protect tooth enamel from the damage caused by bruxism (tooth grinding). Our guards are custom fit for your mouth to help absorb the force of your bite and change behaviour. Ask us if you have any questions about teeth grinding!
Dental restorations come in many shapes and sizes to repair decayed or fractured teeth. Fillings are used to repair smaller areas of decay while larger areas may be addressed with an inlay or an onlay. Crowns are used when there is a large amount of decay or fractures. If the tooth cannot be saved then an implant-retained crown may be used.
Storing a toothbrush out in the open especially near the toilet exposes it to airborne germs and bacteria. Instead, store your toothbrush standing up inside a cabinet so that the water can drain in between brushings and it’s a little more protected.
We think that the instrument sterilization process is pretty cool. Check out this video of all the steps we take to clean tools to the highest infection control standards.

People sometimes think sports guards are only needed for contact sports like lacrosse, hockey, rugby or martial arts, but athletes playing non-contact sports need protection as well. If there’s a risk of getting hit in the mouth or jaw like baseball, basketball or soccer, or a risk of falling like skateboarding, skiing or snowboarding, then a sports guard is a good investment. Custom sports mouthguards are more durable and last longer than store-bought guards. We take an impression of the mouth and specially make each guard for a better fit. That means the guard is more comfortable - and more likely to be worn! Ask us about custom mouthguards today. Call (506) 458-5606.
There are three basic types of dental implants. Single tooth implants are topped with a crown to complete the restoration. Fixed implant bridges replace two or more missing teeth. Implant-supported dentures hold dentures securely in place. If you have questions about dental implant options, please call us at (506) 458-5606.
Smile! We’ve got you covered. Before and after treatment, we ask that patients wear a mask when in the office. If you don’t have your own mask, don’t worry we have one for you.
We are aware of the WHO article regarding community spread and their recommendation to delay nonessential dental appointments. The CDA has stated that the WHO recommendation is not relevant in Canada since there is no wide spread community transmission. There is also no evidence of transmission through a dental clinic and dental clinics place infection control as their top priority in these difficult times. The CDA’s public statement is available on their website: https://www.cda-adc.ca//stat/who_clarification/default.asp
It only takes 24-36 hours for plaque to harden into tartar. Once plaque becomes tartar, it is bonded to the tooth enamel and only a dental professional can remove it. However, flossing once a day, every day can help prevent plaque from hardening into tartar.
What are shark teeth? Shark teeth refer to a child having two rows of teeth in their mouth: the original primary teeth (baby teeth) and the incoming permanent teeth. If your child is experiencing this, give us a call, and we’ll take a look to make sure your child’s teeth are growing in properly.
When you brush your teeth, are you also brushing your tongue? It’s a prime spot for bacteria to build up. Bacteria on your tongue can also cause bad breath, so be sure to brush your tongue before rinsing, and you’ll feel fresh and clean.

You may notice fewer chairs in the waiting room on your next visit. We rearranged the seating to abide by the social distancing guidelines that encourage everyone to stay 6 feet apart. So if you happen to be in the office at the same time as another patient, it will be easier to maintain the appropriate distance.

Happy Canada day! Although celebrations might be a little different this year, we know you will find a way to make it special. So let’s show our maple leaves and enjoy being part of this beautiful country.
The next time you visit our office, you’ll notice that all the toys and magazines from the waiting room have been removed. These items are difficult to keep clean between patients, so to simplify things we stored them away. This is just one of the many changes we are making to keep you safe during this time.
PPE or Personal Protective Equipment has been in the news quite a bit these past few months. Here are some examples of the equipment we use to keep our staff and patients safe at Midtown Dental.
