If you have trouble establishing bend at the start of the shoulder-in ... "It is useful to ride a 10-meter circle in the corner before starting down the long si...de. The circle establishes the bend and the balance between the inside leg and outside rein, which are then kept as you start down the long side." Walter Zettl Illustration by Sandy Rabinowitz

New year - new rules...

The history of dressage is one of development it is not static. In Germany, the heart of dressage riding in the 20th century, the first attempt to codify som...ething like the ‘classical principles’ occurred in 1912 in a Cavalry Manual, this was expanded in 1937. Thank you to Kerstin Niemann of St Georg Magazine who translated this for THM. From the Cavalry Manual: The development of the concept of ‘throughness’ of a contact that is elastic and in a state of changing equilibrium, rather than the Baroque concept where the rein is looped and the horse behind the bit. As the straightness improves the throughness of the horse will improve as well. The pushing capacity of the hindquarters can now go its way through the horse up to the mouth and makes the horse give to the pressure of the bit, bend the neck and chew on the bit. https://www.horsemagazine.com//the-classical-tradition-th/ See more

2021 bids goodbye to the Top Hat - if you still have one, what are you doing with them???

Dressage BC 09.12.2020

Lisa Wilcox and Ernst Hoyos tell us: What I do is not rolkur, it is getting a horse through, and over his back by softening and releasing tension in the base o...f the neck muscles, encouraging them to reach or lengthen the neck to the contact, not hide from it.. You might have to go a little behind the vertical to get that done but it’s the feeling, the timing, it’s not holding them and locking up the base of the neck so the back drops. I’m looking to release the base of the neck, so the back comes up. I want the bow up into me, not to brace and hold and have the false break of the neck, and the chin on the chest. That would be completely against what I am trying to achieve. https://www.horsemagazine.com//first-you-get-your-techniq/ See more

Today's Little Lesson: In order to ensure that you aren’t holding tension in your upper arms imagine the feeling you have when you’re walking down the street wi...th your hands in your pockets, your arms hang relaxed at your side with the weight easily down into a softly flexed elbow. This is the relaxation you want to have in your arms when riding. See more

Hello members, It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our long time member, Arabian horse enthusiast and very good friend Sandra Gilbert ...Stockhausen. Sandra was a dedicated supporter of MICA (Mid Island Cadora Association), the Vancouver Island Arabian Horse Association and the Nanaimo Equestrian Association (NEA). She was everywhere, volunteering at shows, on show committees and as a member of the Executive of all these organizations at various times, often concurrently, over many years. She accomplished all this while also riding and training (daily if she could), and competing on her beloved Arabian horses. Sandra was the best Barn Boss we could have ever asked for; she always managed to organize the riders and horses with talent and efficiency while also competing on three or more horses in a day at the show... and winning! Her involvement led her to relationships with the equestrian community all over Vancouver Island and beyond. Sandra’s energy, enthusiasm, lovely smile and twinkling eye will be greatly missed by everyone who came to know her. Our very sincere condolences to her husband and partner Tom.
