Eastside is immensely proud to announce its successful application for Club Licensing PTSO (Provincial/Territorial Youth Club) Level 2, becoming one of only four members in all of Saskatchewan to achieve Member Association Level 2. "This is very exciting news for the Eastside family," technical director Mike Gramiak said. Eastside achieved the recognition after being recommended for approval by Saskatchewan Soccer and then confirmed by Canada Soccer. According to the Saskat...chewan application, Level 2 of the licensing program "identifies organizations committed to achieving the highest expectations of the Grassroots, Community, and Competitive Streams and targets those with aspirations of moving into the Development/Performance Stream. Organizations achieving the Provincial/Territorial Youth Club Licence Level 2 are making an enhanced commitment across each of the pillars, which requires significant resources to achieve." Eastside president Dave Deibert said the recognition serves as motivation for the club to continue offering the best programming possible. "It's a credit to the amazing coaching staff on the field, the team system behind the scenes, and the players and their families for showing their support and belief in what Eastside has to offer." To date, approximately 170 member organizations from nine member associations have been granted club licensing in Canada. Also achieving Level 2 licensing on Monday were Hollandia, Queen City Regina and FC Regina. Four members from Saskatchewan, along with three from Quebec, received Level 1 licensing, while two in Saskatchewan and two in New Brunswick received Quality Soccer Provider licensing. Big thanks to members of the University of Saskatchewan women's soccer team U of S Huskie Women's Soccer, who recently spent an evening, via Zoom, training and chatting with dozens of members of Eastside Youth Soccer Association Inc. It was a great experience for the Eastside crew, getting the opportunity to ask questions and learn from athletes who have reached a level that many of our youth aspire to.

Lest we forget. ----- In Flanders Fields By John McCrae... In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

As Coaches Week 2020 recognizes the positive impact coaches have, here’s a chance to learn more about @EastsideSask technical director Mike Gramiak .... Q: Other than soccer, which sport would you most love to win a world championship in? Coach Mike: That’s a good question. I really enjoy watching volleyball but I’d say with all the tennis going on, I’d probably say tennis right now.... Q: You, coach Yiannis, coach Garrett and others had regular tennis nights during the summer. Who had the most wins head-to-head? Coach Mike: It was close but I think (U of S women’s coach) Jerson (Barandica-Hamilton) nudged out on top of Yiannis. Q: What about you? Coach Mike: Middle of the pack. We’ll leave it at that. Q: Desert island game: Your plane crashes and you have time to download only five movies onto your iPad. They’ll be the only films to watch while you’re stranded. What are the five movies? Coach Mike: Oh, gosh. I love movies so that’s a tough one. I’d say Inception, Empire Strikes Back, Back to the Future 2, Crazy Stupid Love and last one I’ll say Tenet just ’cause I have to understand what it’s actually about. Q: So, Back to the Future 2? Are you saying that one just to be contrarian? Coach Mike: No, I love that one. Best of the series. Q: You might as well just say Part 3 and be completely off-base. Coach Mike: No, no, no chance. Q: Cats or dogs? Coach Mike: Dogs, for sure. Q: Star Wars or Star Trek? Coach Mike: Star Wars. Q: Poker or blackjack? Coach Mike: Blackjack. Q: Name a secret talent you have that most people wouldn’t know about. Coach Mike: I’ve never been ’megged in my life. (Sierra Deibert, U11 member of Eastside, overhears. But I’ve ’megged you, she says.) Q: Sierra begs to differ. Mike: (Laughs.) Q: Guilty pleasure TV show? Coach Mike: Any one during the summer, it’s probably Big Brother. That eats up a lot of time in the summer. Q: What’s your go-to karaoke song? Coach Mike: I’m lame. Sweet Caroline. Q: You‘re a long-time UFC fan. If you could have four fighters or anyone connected with the company over for dinner, who do you invite? Coach Mike: Oh, gosh. Conor McGregor because he’s a character. Georges St-Pierre because he’s my favourite of all-time. Daniel Cormier. And then Jon Jones, because I love fireworks (laughs).

Change has become a constant right now thanks to COVID-19. The global pandemic affected us locally on the pitch during our summer soccer season and is also forcing some new approaches this winter though, at least in one respect, not as much as we originally expected. Following a change in course by Saskatchewan Soccer Association and Saskatoon Youth Soccer, athletes are now allowed to register in both club and academy - and don’t have to choose between the two. All social restrictions remain in place, and are perhaps even more important, with the change. For more information and to register for first half, second half or full winter with Eastside, follow our link here: http://eastsidesoccer.ca/article/60764 Because of these changes, we have extended our early registration deadline to Sept. 13. #theeastsideway
