Greater Edmonton Animal Rescue Society 01.05.2021

You might have noticed an increase in request for donations and more fundraisers than normal on our page. In the interest of transparency.. we really need your help. GEARS currently owes our partner vet clinics ~$25,000. We've had a lot of animals come into care requiring extensive vetting and still have more to come. Costello, Katya, Kava, and Garth all require dentals. Garth required an echo. Joey needs an echo. Momma Bear had 9 puppies, new intake Nora is also pregn...ant, and there's a chance Katya is as well (we hope to confirm this weekend). Covid has put a huge financial strain on the rescue.. we're unable to have many of our regular large fundraisers and are trying to navigate the world of virtual events. Our supporters are struggling with finances so donations are down.. It's hard for all of us. We don't want to say no, but we're at the point where we've had to close intakes with the exception of our Outreach Community. We need to pay down our vet bills before we can start taking animals into care again. Please consider donating to us.. even $5 helps. If everyone who likes our FB page donated $5, we would have over $86,000! Buy our 50/50 tickets (https://www2.rafflebox.ca/raffle/gears) for a chance to win money for yourself. If you can't donate money, bring your empties to our bottle drive March 13, donate some liquor for our raffle, share our Videogamathon event and our other posts.. every little bit helps. Thank you for your continued support. We appreciate you more than you'll ever know. It's because of you we can do the work we do. The GEARS Board of Directors

Our boys have gotten us to be more active. We love going hiking, walking, biking and travelling with them. They have become a huge part of our family. Wilson in particular started his life outdoors scavenging. He has become an indoor prince who sticks close while camping and needs a hotel bed to sleep on while travelling. #adoptdontshop #adoptme #adoptable #yeg #edmonton #alberta #volunteer #gearssociety #takemehome #rescuegroupsofyeg #animalrescue #animalrescueteam #share #rescuecats #rescuedismyfavouritebreed #support #follow #rescue #adopt #adoptabledogs #adoptabledogsyeg #rescuedogs #gearsanimalrescue #yegrescue #regrescuedog #yegrescues

Hi Everyone! We thought this week we would dive right in to our next trick training challenge! Tricks are a great way to stimulate your pet and build a bond with them! This week we thought we would go over how to train your pet to lie down! This is a good basic trick in which we can add on to in the future! A couple tips before we get into the trick Remember that timing is everything, the reward must be given at the exact moment your pet delivers the action you’re looking f...or. Also remember that they may not get it the first time you say the cue, so reward any attempt your pet makes toward the desired action the first few times. 1. Begin by getting your dog’s attention. 2. Hold a treat in front of your dog’s nose but don't let him get it yet. Next, slowly move the treat towards the ground, letting your dog follow it. 3. Repeat this motion until your dog is all the way down. Try pulling the treat away a little bit if your dog isn't following it down with his body. 4. Once your dog is fully lying down give your dog the treat followed by petting and praise. 5. Once your dog is consistently doing the down motion with the treat, add in the verbal cue. Say the word down clearly and firmly while moving the treat to the ground. 6. Repeat this until your dog lies down with only the verbal cue and no treat-guiding. Continue to reward with a treat after your dog lies down. 7. Once this is established well, try to intermittently give your dog a treat. He will be more eager to do it if the treats are unpredictable Next training challenge, we will cover tricks to add on to the lie down cue! Remember, all pets learn at a different pace and that this should be a fun activity for the both of you! Feel free to comment pictures of your pet learning to spin below! Happy Training! -GEARs Behaviour Team #adoptdontshop #adoptme #adoptable #yeg #edmonton #alberta #volunteer #gearssociety #takemehome #rescuegroupsofyeg #animalrescue #animalrescueteam #share #rescuecats #rescuedismyfavouritebreed #support #follow #rescue #adopt #adoptabledogs #adoptabledogsyeg #rescuedogs #gearsanimalrescue #yegrescue #regrescuedog #yegrescues

Hi everyone! To get into the Valentine’s Day spirit, this week we’ve decided to go over ways to bond with your furry friend! Bonding with your pet is based on trust. This means that the best way to bond with your cat or dog is to earn their trust and become their trustworthy partner. This goes farther than just giving them lots of pets and hugs. Below are some simple ideas to help you build a partnership with your pet! Playing with them. Have fun, let loose and let them be a ...cat/dog. Toss a ball around the yard or play tug of war. Learn their favourite games, buy some of their favourite types of toys, and just play. Not only will it help strengthen your bond, you might even find it relaxing! Try a new trick or command! Training your dog will help you bond with them. Not only is a trained dog allowed more personal freedom, but the mere act of training them in a positive fashion will bring you closer together. Remain calm. Yes, owning a pet comes with frustrations. And sometimes it's not even about your pet, but life in general. But getting upset will frighten most pets, even if that anger isn't directed at them personally. And if it is, then it's even more damaging. Do your best to always speak to your pet in a calm voice, even when they just ate your favourite shoes. Yelling doesn't do anything to fix the problem, it only causes lasting damage to the relationship you have with your pet. The sky's the limit for bonding activities! Hopefully we can show our pets some of these on Valentines Day! Sending love to you and your furry friends, -GEARS Behaviour team

Name: Enzo Age: ~ 11 months Gender: Male Breed: Rottweiler/Doberman Energy Level: 8/10... Dog Friendly: Yes Cat Friendly: Unsure Kid Friendly: Yes, but he knocks over little ones Rescue Story: Enzo came into care as an owner surrender and is ready to find his forever home! Hey Guys & Gals, my name is Enzo or as my foster dad likes to call me, Enzo Benzo! I am currently a 75lb lap dog, I love to cuddle! I’m still young so I will probably get a little bigger, so hopefully you like big cuddles, as I don’t know the meaning of personal space I walk pretty good with my halti, but I could use some work on my leash skills, training would also serve me very well as I am a smart boy and need something to do. I am always hungry, but have learned not to take food from my baby human, however, she loves throwing food at me so I can’t help myself once it hits the ground or if my child human leaves it unattended on the table. I am good with all ages of humans, however, in my adolescence I tend to knock over my tiny human sometimes. I play super well with my doodle roommate although I was nervous of him at first but became comfortable very quickly. A household with a doggy friend for me would definitely be fun as I am always ready to play. I LOVE tennis balls but if left alone with them they will not stay in one piece for long, same with almost any other kind of toy including kids stuffed toys. I know how to sit, stay, lay down and I am house/kennel trained. I have puppy tendencies that will definitely need to be worked on, including jumping up on my humans when they walk in. I would do best with an active family or a family with a dog for me to play with. Are you able to be my new furever family? Love, Enzo

Mark Hughes Photography has been taking photos of our adoptable animals for 5 years now. We're sure some of our adoptions happen just because he has the ability to capture their personality in his photos. We're looking forward to looking back on adoptions throughout the years in this project, and seeing how the animals have changed and grown with their Furever Families!!

Did you know Marshalls Canada is pet friendly? Not only that, but the Marshalls at the Premium Outlet Collection Edmonton International Airport love giving back! When you combine the two, you get The Joy Project! Patti and the amazing staff at her store reached out to us with a plan. Their goal was to raise funds to sponsor GEARS permanent foster Costello for one year. Not only did they surpass that goal, they also donated some goodies for other animals in out care AND let Costello pick out a brand new dog bed! Costello's foster brother Dug even got to pick a new toy. Costello had a visit with the staff today so they could meet him and while he was a little nervous, we think he enjoyed stopping by to say hello! Thank you so much Marshalls!! #compassion #kindness #community

Hey everyone! To kick off this Training Tip Tuesday we will be discussing the importance of socializing your pets. Socialization doesn’t just mean helping your animal to become comfortable with other people and other animals; it means helping them to become comfortable with any novel element of the environment. Whether this is getting them comfortable to new sounds, new textures of surfaces, or even new visuals. There are tons of ways to do this: take your pet to a new dog pa...rk, let them see the mailman or even introduce the vacuum to them. Socialization is much more than letting your pet play with other animals. It is key that you start slowly when socializing your pet. Introduce them to new things in their environment, one step at a time. Let your pet set the pace. If they start to get overwhelmed, the socialization steps you are trying to implement will have no effect since they will now associate negative feelings to whatever you are trying to acclimate them too. The socialization session should be brief and positive. Quality is much more important than quantity here. Hope this helps bring clarity on the subject of socialization! Next week we will cover how to recognize the signs of an uncomfortable pet! Wishing you and your furry family members well! GEARS Behaviour Team

Garth came into care when his owner was no longer able to care for him or GEARS alumni Nitro. The two are bonded and will go up for adoption together once they’re ready. Unfortunately Garth had some medical issues including a chronic cough and dental disease. On the advice of our vet, had an echocardiogram. The results show grade B2 mitral valve regurgitation. He will start Pimobendan on the advice of the cardiologist. It’s expected that Garth’s life span expectancy may ...only be 3-4 years :( We do everything we can to ensure the animals in our care have the best chance at a healthy life.. this can come at a great cost. Garth’s echo alone has cost us $540. Covid has been tough on us, and other charities.. we do what fundraisers we can, but still struggle to pay our bills. We appreciate any donation to help cover medical costs, as we know many of you are struggling also.

Age: ~ 4 months Gender: Male Energy Level: 5/10 Dog friendly: Yes... Cat friendly: Yes Kid friendly: Yes Rescue Story: Opal came to GEARS to find his furever home. Hello Everyone! I would like to introduce myself, I’m Opal! I’m a sweet, cuddly boy who gets along with everyone. My foster home has both cats and dogs and I like them all! My favorite spot to nap is actually with my dog brother on his bed. I like to play with toys and am also very motivated by treats! Shake the treat bad and I will come a running. I think it’s really fun when my foster mom sweeps and I try to help by going after the broom, it’s a great game. If you are looking for a young kitty who gets along with everyone, I’m your guy! Hi everyone, we are seeking a very special foster home for very special boy named Vader. He is a large dog (100 + pounds), who is anxious and insecure. Once he gets to know you he is so sweet and is your best friend but he does have some issues he needs help working through. He has not had the best socialization as a young pup and as a result, he can be reactive to certain things such as other dogs, bikes etc while on leash. Because of this, his ideal foster home would be a h...ome in the country or in a very quiet neighbourhood. The foster home will need to be able to work with him on his reactivity and general anxiety. He is currently on medication, which is helping, but he still has a ways to go. In addition to his reactivity, he has some separation anxiety, so he needs a home where someone is home most of the time to work with him on this. He has, unfortunately, been moved around quite a bit recently so his anxiety has gotten worse, but with time and consistency, it should get better. Vader needs a home with no other pets and no kids. Vader has shown some resource guarding while in care, which has resulted in lunging, he has also made contact with an individual who startled him while on leash. We do have a behaviour team who will provide ongoing support and advice to anyone willing to take him in. If you are interested in meeting Vader, or would like more information, please send a PM or email our foster team. [email protected] See more

Back in September, members of our Outreach team came across a dog that had been previously hit by a vehicle. Riley was not weight bearing on her back leg and had a pronounced point in her back. She was taken into Onoway Vet Clinic where X-rays determined her back had broken and fused together, and she was in need of a Femoral Head Ostectomy to help her regain use of her leg. Amputation was not a good option due to the trauma in her spine. Riley was booked into surgery at ...Edmonton South Animal Hospital and has spent the last few months recovering in a foster home. This cuddly, spunky, and playful girl is now VERY mobile and pain free. She occasionally lifts her back leg when she runs but she'll continue to use it more and more as time goes by. Her back is causing no issues. Riley has officially been surrendered into our care and will soon be up for adoption! Ireland update!!! Hi everyone, Ireland here! Popping in to say that after a few days I’m doing okay! My foster mom and GEARS ensured I got to the vet this weekend (a few times!) and got the care I needed. We had a few scary moments but I’m tough and pulled through! Last night, I decided I might feel like I could start start walking again. My foster mom took a video of me and I think she’s more excited than I am about my walk today I’ve been playing with my foster sister & st...arting to show her how much I love to play! Although I get tired easier than she does & need to nap more. Thank you from the bottom of my puppy heart to everyone who has donated to my care so far!! Without your support I wouldn’t be making the others that I am! love Ireland
