The BC FMNCP connects community organizations and BCAFM member farmers’ markets to provide farmers’ market coupons to lower-income families, pregnant women and seniors. Please see below for a petition to expand this program. https://www.facebook.com/135135406502588/posts/4506419356040816/
Today is International Children's Book Day. The intent of ICBD is to encourage a love of reading in our youth. Do you remember the first book that sparked your joy of reading? What was it? Mine was Black Beauty. My mom read it to me when I was young and though it didn't have pictures, I could 'see' the story and I thought that was magic. This site has some fun printables for your kids and a read along video story. https://www.twinkl.ca//international-childrens-book-day-20
Check out BCAFM's What's In Season! This is a great resource for those wondering what your local farmers might be growing right now. Don't forget that your local meat farmers often have local product in their freezers! https://bcfarmersmarket.org/why-bc-farmers/whats-in-season/
Throwback Thursday! We are a month away from the start of our 2021 season and I am getting so excited! How about you?
Have you been to Errington's own North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre? They are open and have Covid safety measures in place. Most of the property is outdoors and because it is well spread out there is plenty of room for social distancing. It's a fun outing for all! https://www.niwra.org/
Gather up some ingredients, that you may even already have in your kitchen, and mix up some natural Easter egg dye. This article by Better Home's & Gardens is a fun activity to do with your kids and you'll actually want to eat these hard boiled eggs because you know they have only been exposed to natural colours. https://www.bhg.com/holida//eggs/natural-easter-egg-dyes/
"We’re in an extraordinary time of pandemic that’s exposed weaknesses in our food supply chain, especially for seeds. Food security and local food systems have been present in my thoughts since the beginning of the pandemic. Empty store shelves and the knowledge that the stores could be completely emptied within a couple of hours if there was a mass panic, highlighted the need to bolster our Vancouver Island food system. How do we do that? We support our famers. We buy local seeds. https://www.goldstreamgazette.com//the-seeds-of-food-sec/
Remember in the early days of the pandemic when there was a run on toilet paper? Remember how it became harder to get many baking ingredients? Imagine how quickly our store shelves could have been emptied if everyone had panicked. While those memories are still fresh we need to look to our local food systems and see how we can support them to ensure that we are not so dependent on food that is shipped across borders and over ferries. Are you planting a garden this year? Have you purchased BC seeds? Have a look the BC Seeds website for a list of local seed producers: https://www.bcseeds.org/bc-seed-companies/

Is there anything better than sitting down to a delicious soup on a cold fall evening? Autumn flavours are one the reasons that I love fall most of all. Cozy up with a bowl of this soup and enjoy all the 'fall feels'. https://cookieandkate.com/roasted-butternut-squash-soup/
Seeking good, loving homes for our tasty incredibly nourishing squash! :-) Squashespecially the denser, orange-fleshed winter squashes, such as butternut and hubbardis remarkably nutritious. These squash contain up to 750% of the daily value for vitamin A in less than one cup. Squash also have relatively high levels of magnesium, necessary to absorb calcium, and a mineral many North Americans are deficient in. Winter squashes are high in fiber relative to carbohydrates, and... have a low glycemic load. Among a host of other minerals and micronutrients, winter squashes contain a compound called cucurbitacin, named after the squash genus, a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hepaprotector that has caught the attention of cancer researchers as a potential component of cancer therapy medication. https://www.facebook.com/transfarmation/videos/412769333455226
