When a child is late to talk, parents frequently attribute this to a sibling doing the talking for him or her. But is there any truth to this? Is there a relati...onship between birth order and delayed language development? Do later-born children really take longer to develop speech than first-born children? Several studies have shown that the language development and skills of first-born and later-born children are similar. Based on the research, parents can be assured that language delays are NOT caused by older siblings talking for their younger siblings or by parents paying less attention to their later born children. If you have questions or concerns about your childs language development, please call us at 1-888-623-6363 to speak with a Speech-Language Pathologist.

It is important to help children understand and learn to use lots of different types of words in order to be great communicators. Remember to use and emphasize a wide range of words when talking and playing with your child. "That is a BIG truck" "Look the bird is ON the branch"

TALK TIP: LABEL AND REPEAT Labeling is a great, simple way to promote early language development. When babies are young, they dont know an apple from an orange.... Naming things in your environment (home, grocery store, park, etc.) helps give them the vocabulary needed to understand and communicate. So, instead of saying non-specific words, like this" and "that, label the objects. This also applies to actions, jump, run, push, open, swing. The best time to name is when your child is ENGAGED with what you are doing (for example, during daily routines like dressing and bath time) or when you are FOLLOWING THEIR LEAD (for example, during playtime). REPEAT the words often. Children need to hear words MANY times before they say them on their own. During play or daily routines, try to repeat words multiple times during an activity. We recommend repeating the same word 3-5 times during each turn in an activity. For example, while you and your child are playing with toy cars (BEEP is target word): Parent: (respond to what child is doing and use words to match) Beep! The car goes beep! Beep! Beep! Child: (starts pushing the car) Parent: (respond by commenting and repeating the word) Beep beep! The car is moving! Beep!) Child: (pushes car more) Parent: (wait to give child a chance to respond) Child: Be (or no response) Parent: (label word again) Beep! Beep! Beep! Child: (pushes car more) Parent: (waits) Child: Beep! Parent: (add on) Yes! Beep! The car is so fast! The car says beep beep! NOTE: We never want to put pressure on the child by telling them to say a word (e.g., "Say, BEEP!"). If they say the word on their own, thats great and cause to celebrate, but remember to reduce the pressure. Children need to hear words A LOT to learn their meaning. Labeling & repeating words will help your child understand words which then leads to talking. Remember, children need to understand a word or action before they can spontaneously say it on their own. Try it out at home: NAME IT and REPEAT and REPEAT some more!

Parents: its important to remind kids to remove anything "dangly" before they use playground equipment--not just lanyards but scarves, long jewellery and clothing with drawstrings around the neck.

Its not uncommon to hear parents ask their little one to say a word (i.e., Say, ___). Often parents ask their child to do this because its a word they may h...ave said before and they want to hear it again or its a new word that they are hoping their little one will say for the first time. However, asking your little one to say words actually isnt teaching them any new words. Rather, it teaches your child how to imitate words in a meaningless way. It also puts pressure on your child to talk, which can have the opposite effect on them and result in him talking less. Instead, it is important to model the word that you would like your little one to say. You can model words by talking about what your child is doing and what you are doing during play and daily routines. By modeling words in context, it will help your child to learn these words and in time they will say them too on their own and in a meaningful way.

Babies typically start to say their first words around their 1st birthday. Often, parents dont realize what counts as a word and our little ones may be saying... more than parents think. Parents are often surprised to learn that ALL the examples listed in the picture count as words! The key thing to remember is to count it as a first word it has to be said Consistently, Independently, and Intentionally! So, this means, if your child consistently Says moo each time he sees a cow Says boom each time he knocks down a tower of blocks Waves goodbye without help or prompting Uses the sign for all done Says da each time he sees a dog then he has 5 words even though none of them sound like the real adult word. Its important to remember that as children start to say their first words, many of them are not perfectly pronounced and are an approximation of the word. To help us understand if it is a true word, we need to keep in mind these 4 characteristics of a true word: Have a clear vowel that sounds close to the actual vowel one expects for that word. A single production followed by a brief period of silence. Used under specific recurring conditions (i.e., used for a particular person, thing, or situation.) Used in conversation with people! To better understand this, lets take ba for example. If your baby is just babbling and you hear him say ba but he isnt looking at a ball, or isnt reaching or pointing to a ball, then that is most likely him babbling and not saying the word ball. Strings of babble or random sounds are NOT words as they typically lack meaning and consistency. Whereas, if your baby is reaching towards a ball and saying ba and he does this on many occasions, then he is likely saying ball. He has intention and is saying ba in the correct context. There is no magic number for the number of times he must say the word ba for ball for it to count. If your child says it consistently and independently (i.e., not just said when imitating or when prompted) then you count it. Now that you know what to count as a word, how many words does your little one use? Please call us at 1-888-623-6363 if you have questions or concerns about your little ones communication skills.

Th...e Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued food recall warnings related to this outbreak. Additional food recall warnings are possible. There is no evidence to suggest that onions grown in Canada are associated with this outbreak. Onions imported from the United States are under investigation. If you are not sure where a red, yellow, white, or sweet yellow onion was grown, do not eat it. Do not eat, use, sell or serve any red, white, yellow, and sweet yellow onions from Thomson International Inc. of Bakersfield, California, USA, or any products made with these onions.
