#ChinookBlast roars into East Village Chinook Blast is Calgary’s midwinter round up of outdoor experiences designed to bring a little light to the long, dark days of a Canadian winter. And it starts this weekend! The all outdoor lineup will include everything from a motion-activated art installation to winter Indigenous walking tours on SPI, and an urban cross-country skiing loop thrown in the mix to keep it interesting. Is it still too cold to curl? #StPatricksIsland is home to this little hidden gem a synthetic curling rink! While it might be too cold to throw any takeouts (bear with us, we’re new to curling lingo ), rest assured that this cold snap won’t last forever and when it does lift this weekend, the curling rink will be ready for you. Find it on East Village’s 31 acre backyard, St Patrick’s Island right at Confluence Plaza, near the island washrooms and Calgary Zoo parking ...lot. The curling stones will be sanitized daily, but remember to bring along your hand sanitizer and keep your cohort together and safely distanced from others. Life is better around the fire East Village's Hygge Hut and firepits are back as of today! Located just east of the Simmons Building, the Hygge Hut is a Scandinavian-style hut that oozes cozy vibes, and only made better by the glow of the fire. It’s also home to Calgary's best Winter Wonderland-themed photo wall, so if you're stuck in a winter rut, visit East Village to get happy with winter!... The Hygge Hut and firepits will be open and lit on Fridays, 3-7pm, Saturdays & Sundays, 1-7pm (weather permitting).

East Village is getting even more vibrant. If you commute into EV along 9th Avenue, you may notice that the 9th Avenue Parkade and Platform Innovation Centre is very near completion. You might also be thinking to yourself, a parkadeso what? This is no ordinary parkade, people! Not only is it designed for possible future conversion to commercial or residential use, but it will also be the new home to Platform Calgary, a hub for startups and innovation. Attention Cyclists! As of today, your commute in and out of East Village has gotten a little bit sweeter. The 9th Avenue SE cycle track between Macleod Trail and 4th Street SE is now open!

We have been curating public art in the community since 2010, welcoming both permanent and rotating artwork installations to RiverWalk and throughout East Village. Local artist Katie Green brought her work, Bridge, to the neighbourhood in Summer 2019a collection of photographic murals depicting East Village residents and business owners wearing papier-mâché masks of their own creation. Unfortunately, we’ve recently seen two incidents of vandalism and graffiti that have dama...ged two of the 'Bridge' pieces. We remind our community that 'Bridge' was a direct collaboration with East Village friends and neighbours, who, together with the artist, dedicated many hours to bringing this project to life. Although we are disheartened by these acts, we continue to support public art in our community (and the participants who make it possible) as we value its contribution to the fabric and vibrancy of the neighbourhood. We ask the public to respect the artistic process and the people behind it, and take from these pieces what they likewhile leaving them intact for others to experience in their own way, too. We have worked with the artist to restore the damaged 'Bridge' pieces.
